Looks like it may have been a standby old school alarm battery at one time.
Did you trace the positive wire back and see where it goes?

yea my old 84 TA had one of those wired into the alarm and car phone (yea someone put a car phone in it lol) it was in the rear storage space on the opposite side of the spare tire....it was a wiring mess
