Sticky door locks

Anybody else have issues when pushing the lock/unlock button that it takes multiple presses to get them to fully slide over? I get it the car is 40 years old, things don’t last forever. Before tearing the door apart and buying lock motors is this something lubricants can fix?

Re: Sticky door locks

Ive tried spray lubricating the actuator and linkage many times, I can usually get it somewhat working on it's own but it never lasts. Only real way is to take it all out, clean it, replace what's bad, re-lube it.

Re: Sticky door locks

Last time I had my door panels off I thoroughly lubricated and fixed everything in the doors. I even installed new lock actuators. Made almost no difference in the electric lock/unlock function and I still have to press the buttons multiple times. Both my Camaros are this way. This seems to be a very common problem on these cars.

I am more inclined to think it is an amperage or relay issue and want to try diagnosing it that way, but to be honest I'm too busy to bother fixing such a trivial problem and will probably just keep manually locking / unlocking my doors.

Re: Sticky door locks

There's a plastic piece that holds the handle and lock linkages. Its black and has two slots to hold the linkages in place. Anyway, i sanded the rod/linkage thats slides thru those slots with 1000 grit sandpaper. Made the rods very smooth and slide noticeably quicker w/ the power dr lock.

I also sprayed brake cleaner into the dr. lock solenoids to free them up some. Other thing i did was make sure the rod/linkage isnt binding. Especially as it passes into the door bezel. I made it so it just "floats" in the space where the plastic cover fits on the end.

Used GM lock solenoids still work better than new generic solenoids. Ask me how i know.

Re: Sticky door locks

Same problem here. Passenger door lock slides all the way over. On the driver's side, it doesn't quite make it. The door does actually lock; it's just the plastic lock slider switch that doesn't go all the way over to cover up the red "unlocked" indicator. A cosmetic issue really.

A little annoying, but not worth tearing apart the door. Those brittle old parts scare me.
