working on my interior

Hey everyone! I’m new to the forum and wanted to say hello. I’m starting to tackle some interior upgrades on my ride and figured this is the right place to get ideas, tips, and recommendations. I’m looking at seats and headlinerand still figuring out what direction to go, so I’d love to hear what’s worked for you all.

Re: working on my interior

Depending on the quality of the existing headliner, pull the old one out, get new material, glue, some dowel rods, a helper and DIY it. You WON'T be happy with anything aftermarket out there.

Depending on the age of your car, the headliner will show it condition after u remove the covering material. In most cases the headliner board is very bad condition.
I had to purchase a plastic board & have the new cover material installed. The board was a good fit.

Exactly what is this "ride" you're referring to?...

Agree with the above. If you can salvage the headliner board and just recover it, do it.

Here's what the plastic aftermarket ones look like - gaps everywhere.

I purchased a plastic board from Classic Industries for my 1983 T/A with t-tops in late 2024. I did have to lengthen the opening for the dome light.
Otherwise it fit very well.

Gaps, and, the fabric doesn't stay put for long. I got an aftermarket headliner, one of the plastic-backed ones, for our '92 B4C. It was a couple of years before we were able to get to that project, and the new headliner laid on the roof of another car, covered with a sheet, in our shop, undisturbed during that interim. When I pulled the sheet off to move it, I discovered that the material had already separated from the backing board.

The OEM backer board, like 72buick mentions, wasn't in the bast of conditions, but I did do some repairs and coated it with fiberglass resin, patching some tears with fiberglass cloth in places. The board really didn't look all that good, but it's okay with the fabric on and the headliner reinstalled in the car. IF I had started removing the old headliner with the intent of reusing it, I would have been much more careful. So, at least when you pull the old headliner, be very careful with it, in case you want/have to use it. And as others on this forum have mentioned, that headliner was about 3/4" too short.
