Hello,
I have a 84 Z28. The seats are ruined and were uncomfortable anyway. I am thinking of upgrading the front and rear seats to something more comfortable. Possibly adding custom leather pattern with power adjustable and maybe heated to the front. Any suggestions out there or has anyone upgraded their 3rd gen seats?
Thank you all.
One obstacle I have is it's the blue interior. VERY blue interior. So, a bit of a challenge to match but actually something different in the seats may break up the VERY blue interior nicely. I think I'm leaning towards aftermarket where I can custom the seats in a black leather and maybe put some blue accents or blue stitching to match the blue interior. I ran across Katzkin, which is custom aftermarket. I just don't know anything about them. I'm a lot older with a bad back than I was when I drove this car 40 years ago, so comfort has become a priority at this point in my life. So, with that in mind, I like the idea of adding power seats for comfort only in the front. I'm not concerned with the back being as comfortable obviously. I'm replacing the carpet and ordered the blue like stock and was going to try and salvage the stock seats which can be done, but they are cloth and not very comfortable. So, I just started exploring the idea of upgrading the seats while I have the opportunity to do so. I appreciate any help at all. Especially from anyone who has done this already and can comment on the comfort, quality, and ease of installation. Photos would be helpful too!
Thank you!
Like others have stated there are a wide range of seats available and any seat can be made to fit. If you want ease of installation for yourself with power I would say find a set of used power 4th gen seats. The camaro seats are pretty basic. If you want a little more comfort I would say find a set of 4th gen power leather seats. Those would have headrests better with side bolsters in my opinion. Some have power lumbar as well and they bolt right in after adding your power for the seats. Any good interior seat shop should be able to match your stock interior color and do whatever else color or stitching wise. and while they have the seat apart easily be able to add heater elements to them.
Most aftermarket seats will probably have some form of raised side bolsters, which might make it difficult for someone with a bad back to get in and out of, especially in a car as low as a 3rdgen.
Recaro still offers a simpler seat like the one that was available for earlier 3rdgen Firebirds, or you might even be able find a set of the actual ones that came in Firebirds. Other good options are 3rdgen GTA seats, which are electric. And 4thgen Firebirds had a couple of designs that were like updated versions of the GTA seat. Any of those will probably be the most comfortable. Even 4thgen Camaro seats are likely to be better than 3rdgen Camaro seats.
Speaking of, I was browsing a local Vegas junkyard this afternoon, and I saw a 2001 Camaro in "purple," although it looked like dark blue, and it had a full set of 4 very nice seats that were grey with multi-shades of blue inserts that would look good in and brighten up a 3rdgen dark blue interior, and they were electric, and I thought of your post. I clicked some pics, but now I see you're in Indiana.
But this might give you an idea of something you might want to look for. For these, specifically, one seam on the driver's seat has popped, likely from sliding in and out of the car, but other than that, they're hardly worn at all, not even stained. For being in a junkyard car, STILL in a junkyard car, these are "immaculate." A thorough cleaning (to get the previous owner's smell out of them), repair the seam, fix or replace the electric switch cover panel, and these will be install-ready. The sun was freaking BRIGHT, so I could barely see what I was capturing in the phone's screen, but I got them pretty good.
I'm not sure what seats go for in junkyards these days, but if you happen to be planning a drive out west in a truck, these would be worth a pass-through Vegas.
