Help Preparing for LS1 Swap
I been debating on many engines over the last month and I really need to get something rolling as far as a mindset. Gas is going sky high so most logical gas mileage wise for my Camaro would be a LS1 it gets 20+mpg city my current setup gets half that if I’m lucky. I have been planning this out trying to make sure I get everything I possibly need. My biggest concern is fuel! My car is carbureted my fuel lines are on the passenger side of the car. Here are some option I was thinking about running a inline Holley pump 255lph near the tank and using a really long stainless breaded line to connect to the fuel rail on the driver’s side. Or try to get a LS1 tank with sender still in it only thing is what do I do for fuel lines can I use braded lines under the car or do I need to get some hard lines and one those little hand benders? And do I need the fuel pump harness? I know if I go the tank rout I need 3/8" for sending and 5/16" for return line. But all the LS1 senders I have seen are plastic! How do I mount a hard line or braded line to something plastic? Now to the gauges I have a mechanical driven speedo so I will need one those little boxes that convert electronic single to mechanical correct? For the tach do I need one those $30 single converter boxes? And as far as the other gauges they should just plug and play right? Now computer mounting I want to keep cost down so just using a reworked harness would probably be most cost efficient where are most of you mounting your boxes? Or is it worth spending the $1100 for a harness to put the ECM in stock location? Now to the cooling fans hawks told me I could use LT1 or LS1 fans (I have mechanical fans now). They said I would just have to use a radiator form either a LT1 or LS1 would this be correct? Are LS1 and LT1 radiators drop in and go or do they need modifications? Sorry about all the question I have done much reading but can find a swap similar to mine I went to LS1 tech and signed up but its been 2 weeks and they have not activated my account so I can ask question to people that have done similar swaps. So I thought the vast knowledge on this site could help me.
To answer a few of your questions, i have know a couple of people that have used the stock lines on the passenger side. You can flip the fuel rail 180 on the intake and the feed line can hook up on the passenger side. So you just need the fuel regulator and the lines/fittings to connect under the hood. As far as fuel pumps go i just went with a 255lph intake and it is working great.
The LS1 radiator would take some modification to fit, i am unsure about the LT1. I am running a stock 3rd gen radiator with a stock electric cooling fan, it would probably be simpler and cheaper to pick up a third gen fan and mount it.
Speedo, you could use the box or go with aftermarket electric(the route i plan on taking)
Tach, you could use the converter(i already have an autometer)
I didnt go with a/c and mounted my pcm where the stock a/c box was so i cant help you there.
Good luck with your swap
