i was wondering if anyone would like a ls1/t56 write up. including all the parts and steps and what not to actually put this combination in your car? i was toying with the idea of writing one. since its still fresh in my head. let me know what you all think.

I think it would be nearly impossible to do it including all the parts and whatnot because there are sooo many different ways of doing it.

I know that a couple people have talked about doing one, but I'm yet to see it...

If you do end up writing something up, I'd be interested in seeing it, and maybe adding my 2 cents in where I did things differently.

F-Body Motorsports has done many LS1 upgrades in a 3rd gen. It is a bitch as the strut towers have to be modified to make room for the engine and components.

a write up would be nice to post in the tech section.

I have never heard that before. I have heard that the heater box will hit the stock coils, but this is fixed with a set of truck coils.

write it

for the guy about the strut towers, perhaps he could be getting this confused with notching the crossmember for the ac compressor, or the coils coming close to the ac box, ?? no biggie

Not true. Just drop the engine in without the coils on and put them on afterword. Fits like a champ.

I used truck coils because of the overwhelming number of posts saying we needed to. Somehow I doubt all those people are wrong.

Maybe it depends on what motor mounts you use? We didn't have any clearance issues with the coils on my stock 83. Full size heater box and intact A/C.

My number 8 doesnt seem to clear either... Granted I havent tried it with the HVAC box bolted completely back in...but I dont see it clearing. The upper part of the plug wire hits it pretty good. My solution was to just modify the coil bracket a bit...moving the coil up 1/2" or so. Should work fine. Seems to be hit or miss on that thing clearing. I wish I would have known it was going to interfere before I finished my custom work on the HVAC box. I would have built in a recess back there to take care of it.. Guess I still could. I just got sick of using fiberglass...

I went tubular, and with the truck coils its pretty darn close.

There is also the option or remote mounting them, then you can even use nicer valve covers...

I wanted to go tubular...but couldnt justify the price at the time. I would LOVE to relocate them and get new fabricated valve covers... I just couldnt find a nice neat place to put them that looked clean. The 4th gen'ers can hide them under the cowl. Good advantage... However I like being able to see teh whole engine with it in my 87

I wouldn't call it spacious, but like I said, they fit for me so I didn't even think twice about buying new coils for no reason.

true. i did everything in gloss black. swap mounts, and suspension. half the fun of doing this is pulling up next to someone and they think your all stock. or stock with a loud exhaust. HAHA

A write up would be pretty cool. It seems like all of the info to get the swap done could be found here on the site, but to have it all in one write up would be awesome!

so is anything going to come of this? there's a local 2005 LQ9 5k miles, 4l60w or whatever, and PI converter that I'd really love to throw in my car if I could do it in about a week... otherwise I'd have to buy something else to daily drive until I could get it done.

....about a week? haha honestly i couldnt of done it in a week. i did mine in about 2 weeks. and about 3 days worth of wireing. but everything in my car works and not to be arrogant but its pretty much show quality if i had an exterior paint job. lol. but it will definately take you longer then 2 weeks. and i have been stocking up parts for the past 5 months.

I would hugely appreciate the write up. Mostly all my knowledge of thirdgens (and car mechanics in general) have come from this site, and when I someday do an LS1 t56 swap, your write up will be used extensively .

DINGLE!!!! I cant believe I didnt see it before in your pics! I also cant believe I didnt think to try this!! I see why your coil fits! Do you have it bolted right to the valve cover??? And reversed?? To the spot where the coil bracket would normally go??? I modifed my coil bracket with a u-joint strap to fit...but the wire is pretty tight. Dont ask... haha.

Did I just miss out on this whole idea bout bolting the coil right to the cover or what? I was going to make my own custom brackets so that it looked better...but if I can just hack that part of the bracket away all together, and bolt the coil right to that one standoff....Ide be set! Let me know if thats what you did or if Im getting excited over nothing...

Oh...and if I had a decent place to work...and all I was doing was swapping out the motor and trans..and maybe the rear... I could have the swap mostly done in a week. If not sooner. I could probably wire one in an evening. Especially if the fuse blocks are there from the donar. This is putting in full days on it and having an inside place to work...with some good tools. With a lift...definetly no problem.

Im trying to put together some info on the swap...however since Im so close to finishing mine...Im still putting in time nad learning things as well. So maybe in a week or so when Im done and driving it I can pull all of my info/bookmarks/pictures/etc together and submit it to the cause.

The 98's had individual coils vs a 'coil pack'. I imagine that's what he has and why it looks different.

I got it in there with the truck packs, havent had a bit of trouble. The strut mount guy was either being funny or being a little misinformed

kevin: Ah...I thought all the LSx motors had coil brackets... It still looks like he has the one flipped around though. Cant imagine why they wouldnt atleast face them all the right way. Either way...it looks like a solution. Might be way some people say it fits and others say it doesnt. Could be the year range of the engine. Thanks for the info.

xtremeirocz: I would have used truck packs...but that would have required me to go junk yard hunting. I cant imagine buying all new packs and a harness and the new bracket...that might get costly. I tried a truck coil but the harness was different...it was at that point that I gave up. haha.

I might mess around and see if I can mount that side right on the cover...or atleast mount the back one or two on the cover. see where that gets me.

Just wondering if anyone would post up their information on how they did the swap if i set up a wiki? I have to change web server software since my wiki software doesn't like the other software. So if change this will you guys post it up? Or i can find one of the many free wiki places and set up one for everyone to use.

I already saw someone put up a wiki for this, maybe on LS1tech....noone is using it.

I think it would be better to just let everyone write their own, and then host them together...I know MrDude (I'm pretty sure it was him) had planned on doing one and even registered a domain but still hasnt had time to complete it.

well everyone start writing them and posting them. Then I'll put them all on a server as a backup until mrdude gets his domain set up

Sorry, been busy and I didn't get a thread notice in my email. Oh well. The engine is indeed from a 98 as are the coils.

92camarors5spd,

I had said originally when I started doing my swap that I was going to do a write up with pictures as I went along the way. However, I got to caught up on the actual project I forgot about the write up. It would be nice if you wrote one if you have the time. I will definitely share in with some or any information needed. Again good luck.
