LT1, walbro fuel pump problem?

I'm not really sure exactly whats wrong yet. I took out the car on friday nite, drove around off and on, put about 40 miles on just driving around in town. I had about 1/2 a tank in before I started really driving and then added about 3-4 gallons. The fuel pump was whining really really loud towards the end of the night. I didn't think much of it because I just removed the rear seats and thought maybe thats why it was louder. The engine started cutting out and would die eventually. I could wait 30 seconds, start it up, drive it, and it would be fine for another 30 seconds then it would die again. The longer I let the car sit, the longer it would run after I started it.

Got the car home, hooked it up to the datamaster program and put on the fuel pressure gauge. The fuel pressure would drop after I let it run for about a minute. It was reading around 5-10 but I don't know if I had the gauge hooked up good enough though the first time. The fuel pump was whining extremely loud even when I just turned the key on and didn't start it. Without the engine running and the key on, the fuel pressure readings seemed ok, 37-42 psi.

I let the car sit without the engine running for about a 1/2 hour. Then the fuel pump was no longer so freaking loud. All I did was turn the key on, no starting off the engine. Its friday nite around midnite and didn't want to upset the neighbors.

Maybe the fuel pump is not getting enough electrical current and needs a new fuel pump relay and/or bigger wires going to the fuel pump.

Maybe the fuel pump is getting too hot and not wanting to run right. I took out the exhaust shields recentl. I haven't put on my tips yet so exhaust kind of stays under the car. The muffler might be touching the exhaust tank but I doubt that.

Maybe something is going on inside of the tank.

So, I'm wondering what caused the fuel pump to be so loud. Also wondering if the fuel pump is the problem. I'm going to play with it more tomorrow.

Firebat,

Back when I had my 85' Iroc-z it would do the samething after a long drive. Although, it won't cut off or stall it would whine like crazy after it got hot. Maybe try putting the heat shield back on. If that doesn't help it test the wires to make sure the fuel pump is getting enough juice. You could also start by changing the fuel filter.

How long have you had that gas in the car? When you dropped the tank last time did you have any debris or anything in the tank?

Good luck,
Jay

Re: LT1, walbro fuel pump problem?

I filled it up with gas once before about a month ago when it was 1/4 tank. Last nite was the second time this year that I put some gas in it.

No, nothing in the tank last time.

I'm going to try getting a new fuel filter on today.

The fuel filter and fuel pump have about 1000-1500 miles on them.

I think it was the fuel filter.

I changed it and drove it around. I couldn't even hear the fuel pump when I was inside the car driving at about 1500 rpm. Its about 20-40 degrees hotter outside than last night.

I put in the same WIX filter from o'reillys again. I dont know...

I'm glad to here you got it fixed. I don't know why it happens but it seems like more problems happen while the car is sitting opposed to driving.
