Yes, it has high mileage but will it run like a champ for a while?

I've been told that chevy engines will run to over 500,000 miles and still run strong if taken care of properly.

Yeah the care taken is a HUGE aspect
my sister ran hers to the ground with 3 year old oil, daily driver
and with her track record of cars (all of them F-bodies that went to the crusher from being totalled) she should be buying fords!

this engine would be going into her 98 formula

this engine is an option, but shes also looking at a 98 camaro as a donor
if she picks that up then I plan on talking her into letting me grab whatever parts I want off that car since my birthday is next week

Re: Does this LS1 look good?

Thats too uch money for an LS1. that is a 98 which are the worst out of all ls1 years to get. 99-00 are better, 01-02 are the best. that is basically just a longblock. i have a 02 ls1 longblock for sale here in KS with 29k on it for $1800. if you price out all your wiring, ecm, intake, senors, accessories, your going to have a ton wrapped up in that motor. i've also got a complete 02 ls1 & 4l60E pullout for $2600.

there are alot better deals out there that that motor. just my $.02

Re: Does this LS1 look good?

too high priced for a 98 motor. the 00-02 engines go for that much and have a better intake and rod bolts.

Re: Does this LS1 look good?

I may be incorrect, but didn't the '97-98 LS1 engines also have a much thinner cylinder sleeve that only really had enough meat for a .010" hone when rebuilding? Whereas the later years had a thicker sleeve that was fine with the traditional .030"-.040" cut?

That is what GM claimed, although the most I've personally seen to date is a tad over 200,000 miles, and, so far so good. The price for that '98 engine is a little too steep, but if your just looking for something to get around in, the '98's are okay. Although weaker in certain areas in comparison with later designs, they did in fact come with a 'slightly' larger camshaft over the later LS1's though....

Yeah, its just going to be in a DD, woman driven (nothing offensive meant by that) just that women don't really have the tendency to open up the throttle as much as guys

anyways, what would be a reasonable offer?

and just as a note
it wont be run in any sort of high performace configuration

it will be going into a 1998 Firebird Formula WS6

Re: Does this LS1 look good?

^ I would honestly walk on. The mileage isn't all that high, but the very fact that the seller "suggests" an engine rebuild (to cover his @ss) tells me that it was in fact beat on those hundred plus miles. You need to confirm oil pressure, as well as cylinder compression for yourself before you lay down your money. There are much better deals out there, you just have to keep looking....

Re: Does this LS1 look good?

I'd pass on it. Your going to kill yourself trying to piece together the rest of what you need to actually make it running/driving, and that's assuming it's good to begin with. You can probably find EVERYTHING you need, wiring, even transmission, ready to drop in, for 3500 or so.

Oops. Sorry.....since this is a thirdgen engine swap forum I assumed this was for a thirdgen engine swap.

Re: Does this LS1 look good?

If it's going into a '98 (if the '98 doesn't have a motor already) you need to replace it with a '98....well you don't really but the wiring and PCM are different in the '98 than the other years.

My '98 has 154k miles on it and still is as strong as others I've rode in.

There's nothing wrong with the '98 model motors, they had larger camshafts than the 99+ cars, the heads are pretty much the same except the valve covers are permiter bolt vs centerbolt, they had stainless steel manifolds instead of cast iron, and yes they could actually only be done to .005 in a hone instead of the .010 that a 99+ motor could do.

One of the plus to the '98 is, it and the '97 are the only ones that actually read the true water temp on the gauge instead of it being a guide for what the temp is.

That is not a truck pan, that is the stock ls1 f-body pan. truck pans are much deeper.

check this one out.
