Long Block Storage Question

I have an assembled long block 6.0L LQ4 sitting on an engine stand in my garage (not a heated garage). I have put my swap on hold for now, and have a few questions about what I should do to prevent any problems that may arise from storing it for like 4 more months. That's on top of the 9 or so that it has already been sitting.

So, what I had originally done was squirt a bunch of WD-40 into the cylinders, then cranked it over by hand a few times. Last time I did that was months ago. In retrospect, I think I would have been better off pouring some oil into the cyls. instead, but aerosol was so convenient...

So, I think what I'll do is spin the block around on the stand and pour out whatever WD-40 is still left in there, and then put in some regular motor oil, crank it over a few times by hand and call it good...? Should I also flip it over, take the oil pan off and drizzle some oil onto the crank, rods, etc...? I guess there's not really anything else to do, given that I want to avoid dissassebly... I mean there shouldn't be any problems with it sitting around for a year or more as long as it stays dry and oiled, right? Only thing I'm worried about, I guess, is just that with it staying assembled, I can't really get the oil to everything... But, there should be enough film left in those places to prevent rusting, right?

Re: Long Block Storage Question

spray WD-40 in the cylinders like you're doing, seal the motor back up and once a month spray more in there and turn the motor over 1 3/4 turns or so to get different valve springs open and close the ones that were all the way open. that should be fine for a long term storage

i like soaking a stored motor with tranny fluid.
works much better than wd40, IMO.

Interesting, anything specific that makes it better than just motor oil?

Re: Long Block Storage Question

Another suggestion that could be easily overlooked - call up a local sporting goods place, & ask what they'd suggest for long-term storage of firearms. I've seen some "dry" lubes that adhere to vertical metal really well, & aren't especially difficult to clean off...

Just a thought. (Now, )

cant really say. it was passed onto me from my dad.
ive stored 2 blocks for 5 years and all they needed was a hone.
this is of course sprayed and wrapped in a bag.
tranny fluid is adheres better than oil. oil will run off over time.

good tip on the gun shop. i want to say fogging oil, but there may be something better out.

CRC 6-56 marine lubricant is some nice stuff too, just a lil pricey over the options above.
