lt1 not flashing codes,any ideas?

My lt1 threw a ces light the other night and i tried to flash the codes like ya do on a tpi setup(paperclip between pins a & b on aldl)and if i put the paperclip jumper in aldl and turn the key on the ces light won't turn on or flash but the coolant fans turn on,if i turn the key on and then put the paperclip jumper in aldl the light will stay on but wont flash and coolant fans turn on,i checked my wiring and everything seems good, anybody got any idea what could cause this?any suggestions would REALLY be appreciated.

By doing a quick search on an LT1-oriented site, I found that the paperclip trick only works on '93 LT1s...from '94 on up you need a scanner.
