And today he decided to lay down the blue and first coats of clear coat while I was at work. I didn't want to take my nice camera in there to take pictures today because there was still a lot of clear coat fog in the garage and it would ruin the lense on my camera, so these are from my phone.

Very cool... blue cars rock!
Hopefully I will be able to tear my car down all the way (like your dad is doing) at some point in the not-too-distant future...

Re: LSX Swap #2 - 1989 IROC-Z hardtop
Today we got the shell and doors sanded, put a final two coats of clear on it with a better gun, sanded that and buffed it out, and now it looks AWESOME. All we have to do now with painting is the ground effects, spoiler, hatch, front bumper and mirrors. It's coming together really nicely. We are VERY pleased with how well the body and doors turned out, we really spent our time on this one, even though it wouldn't seem that way since about a week ago this thing was red haha!

Thanks guys
Next is going to be my convertible! Believe it or not my car will need as much body work, if not more than this IROC-Z because the doors are full of dings from idiots when it was my daily driver

Seriously, with the way my job search has been going, that would be a cool idea to do for right now lol. I would have to rely on Jon for making harnesses for me too!

I will talk it over with my dad. Both of us could really use the money right now. If there were enough interest in it, I could see something happening with it.

Re: LSX Swap #2 - 1989 IROC-Z hardtop
He said he'll think about it. He wants to know how much interest there would truly be in it because it really is a LOT of work to paint a car or do a swap. I told him I would want to at least try it out on one car just to see how things go and see if he likes it or not, and go from there. So maybe we'll see...I gotta get a first customer sometime. He wants to get his car put back together first though (the shell, not running and everything). That will take a few more weeks.

I would love to drop my car off with you guys and have you redo the body work and lay down a similar color to what it originally was but I highly doubt I have the funds for that...

Re: LSX Swap #2 - 1989 IROC-Z hardtop
Considering we don't do this for a living, and we don't have an actual spray booth, we work in the garage, it may not be as bad as you would think. I'd have to consult my dad before putting a number out there, besides every paint job is different, one person may want the car stripped down like this one, where as the next guy just wants it all in one color.
Re: LSX Swap #2 - 1989 IROC-Z hardtop
Also, no swap is the same. They can go from mild (mine) to wild (yours). Costs and procedures may be similar in a sense, but they arent the same. Itd be hard to put a number on the work required without having several swaps under your belt

Hmmm, my swap is done but I'm going to need my car fully stripped down and repainted at some time in the future. If you guys consider doing this I would definitely have some business for ya... looks like you do great work. Couldn't say how soon though.

Re: LSX Swap #2 - 1989 IROC-Z hardtop
That's true, but I was kind of thinking along different lines for doing swaps. I would probably want to do something where the person that owns the car will provide the engine and transmission, and any of the extra "goodies" they want on it like k-member, etc. I would tell them I get a harness for x amount of dollars, cross member for x amount of dollars, and knotched k-member for x amount of dollars. That way I have no liability in the engine and trans themselves, so if someone's used junkyard pullout motor only runs for 3,000 miles I won't have to do a rebuild for them. It would basically be a labor-only type thing.

Well shoot, talk it over and pass me a number. The car was originally gunmetal and I would be going with cyber gray from the new Corvettes and Camaros so it wouldn't need to be stripped. I doubt there's much rust repair aside from a few small spots. Just a sand, primer, paint and clear job.

Re: LSX Swap #2 - 1989 IROC-Z hardtop
We picked up a 2nd parts car last night. Its a white hardtop '89 Camaro, got it for a steal and it came complete inside and out except for the motor and trans, even has another full interior from another Camaro that came with it. So that will be fun taking apart this week as we try and make more money for the swap parts

Hi guys. My name is Dave, I'm Nick's dad. He signed me up on the site, I've looked on here for quite some time looking over his shoulders at the classifieds section and the swap discussions. He's letting me use a picture of his car and a 1990 IROC we used to have for right now. Hopefully the swap doesn't take too long so I can get one of the actual car before too long.
Anyways, I just wanted to say hi.

We were doin' werk today
This morning this car had doors, hatch, and full interior in it. Oh and look at that hole in the floor, I wear a size 14 shoe and the thing is about as big as my shoe! You can really tell how big it is in the 2nd picture haha

Re: LSX Swap #2 - 1989 IROC-Z hardtop
Its a custom AC vent
People tell me I have huge feet with size 12's. 14's? Jesus
It wouldnt be a bad idea to keep the 89 engine harness. 89 was its own year and nothing but 89 will interchange into it. Makes it a bit tricky for them to find a replacement for a swap

Re: LSX Swap #2 - 1989 IROC-Z hardtop
I've got two sets of wheels, the ones on the white car are the 15" IROCs, or I have the 16" '91/'92 alloys also.
Jon, I didn't know '89 was a year of its own, I'm thinking we're going to use the dash from the white parts car so I'll probably snag the engine harness too and send that to you when the time comes.

Re: LSX Swap #2 - 1989 IROC-Z hardtop
I think that's what we'll do. I talked to him about it today and he said that would probably be the easiest way for him. That way he can also sell the harness from the '92 with the engine and trans and hopefully make a little more money on it.
It's starting to look like a car again. We put some of the ground effects back on and a new rear crash bar, the back bumper, and the spoiler end caps. We were going to install the tail lights but ran out of time, look how shiney they are. My dad sanded them down and sprayed clear coat on them, just like we did with mine but the ones on my car have a little VHT Nightshade on them also

Anyways, I just wanted to say hi.
I spent some time with the young man who bought that 1990 IROC on Friday. The car is in decent shape (it's still rolling after he drove it for several years as a teenager - which is great), and is still quite the looker. The engine was replaced about a year ago and it needs a new passenger fender. He's shipping off to the Marines in August.Good job so far on the swap/rebuild. I just pulled the k-member on mine (with the engine hanging in the bay)
