Re: LSX Swap #2 - 1989 IROC-Z hardtop
OMG! Nice score on the 4thGen!!! I think we all need some parts off that bad boy! following the build so far! looking good
I hope my vert comes out as good as yours..
What did you use to paint the rear end? undercoat the car?
(doing my underbody too, just got the gas tank and looking for an LS1 rear w/ brakes).

Re: LSX Swap #2 - 1989 IROC-Z hardtop
The car has been at my dad's friend's shop for close to two weeks now, he's been working on it as he has extra time at work.
We will be bringing it back home sometime this week. My dad went over there this past week after the k-member was cut and re-welded for the a/c compressor, he painted it with some POR-15 and says it looks pretty good. Also, my dad got a cheap set of Hooker shorty style headers, and had his friend cut the emissions tubes off and weld them shut, then they got painted also. Today my dad told me that the engine is in the car, and his friend is just finishing up a few other smaller things.
It should be running in a couple of weeks I would imagine. My wife, grandma, and myself got him some stuff for the car for Christmas that he'll be opening up soon. We got him the billet EGR blockoff for the LS1 intake from Hawks, a '99 C5 fuel filter, all the Russel fittings that are needed for the fuel line setup, 10' of stainless braided line, and one of those hood latch area filler panels for a non-TPI car.

We got the car back home last night, with custom made a/c and power steering lines to boot! My dad knows a guy who knows a guy...lol
The powersteering high pressure line goes underneath the reservoir instead of over the top and behind like the factory ones do I think.

No that's my dads friend's shop. I wish I had a garage like that, he's got two lifts.
And the wheels on the car are my stock 91 wheels, they just stick out further in the rear because he's got a 4th gen rear end.

bluezee, what are the part numbers for the heater core hoses you're using (those long ones with the 90 degree)? i've found one locally, but the other size I can't seem to come by.

Re: LSX Swap #2 - 1989 IROC-Z hardtop
I'm pretty sure he just got some generic hose with a 90* on the end that was the correct diameter, that's what I did on mine too. I had to have napa pull up the real part number for a stock 305 to measure the diameter and then pulled a generic hose with the angle on the end off the shelf.

if you look at the water pump, you'll see that both of those lines have a 90 degree bend and 3-4" from there. good at keeping the hoses tight to the engine. i found one of these lines (3', bend, 4") at my local advance store, but the other i couldn't locate. saw the part number on one of his hoses, wasn't sure if he had the numbers for both.

Now that I look at the pictures I think I do see a part # sticker on the other hose. I'll take a look at it closer this weekend for you. These hoses only have one 90* angle in them, just like the ones on my car.

Today we finished my dad's fuel system with the stainless line and Russell fittings just like mine, except we used the 90* fittings instead of straight. His looks AMAZING, the fuel filter went into the stock location. I'm definitely going to have to re-do mine this year...
Tomorrow we hope to finish some other small jobs and try and get the rest of the wiring connectors plugged in where they need to go. We bought his radiator hoses, wired up the fans, and pretty much have to put the starter in, install some battery cables, plug in the C100 and then have my tuner come over and get it running (hopefully

Re: LSX Swap #2 - 1989 IROC-Z hardtop
Today my dad picked up the rest of his interior parts from the upholstery shop. He had his headliner, sun visors, and rear speaker covers all re-covered in new material, as well as had his new inner window sweeps installed on the door panels, and had a new cushion cover installed on his driver seat that we pulled off another seat. He said the stuff looks awesome, we can't wait to get it installed. We're hoping to finish the rest of the things that need to be done to start it the first time this weekend, and then we'll put the interior back together. As it sits right now, the only things inside the car is pretty much the carpet and plastics from the rear seats back.
Here's his fuel system. It looks much nicer than mine because we put the filter in the stock location. I'm really thinking about changing mine while I have my car on stands changing the rear end this spring.

We got pretty much everything except the windshield wiper motor hooked up, and we're waiting on the intake couplers and tubing that he ordered to come in, along with a new PCV assembly from the dealership, because the person he bought the car from was running around with this:

It was snapped off completely...oil was everywhere on the block...

Probably not. He's not going for *****-to-the-walls performance like I am. He just wants a quick car that will get better gas mileage and perform up with today's standards, and be able to drive it every day if he so chooses. He probably won't keep it longer than a year or two, he really would like to have a vert or a '79 Trans Am.

Looks great Nick! I noticed you used the stock LS1 coil brackets instead of the relocated ones. Any interference with the A/C box? Sorry if it already says, I didn't go through and read all 4 pages.

I'll get a good pic of the rear passenger side coil and the ac box for you. I think that one coil got stepped upward a little to clear the box, I don't remembe honestly because with this swap, my dad actually had his friend put the engine in the car on his lift at his shop, and I wasn't there for that part.

Re: LSX Swap #2 - 1989 IROC-Z hardtop
Looking good. I dont know if you are going to run coil covers on the car. But if you do I found it was easier to turn the heater hoses around. So the 90's are coming off of the heater core. Just a little tip that i learned the hard way. -Tim

Re: LSX Swap #2 - 1989 IROC-Z hardtop
I was going to take a picture of where the rear coil is on the passenger side, but the heater core lines and the wiring harness over by the a/c box are in the way and you wouldn't be able to see the coil in the picture. I asked my dad if he had to step up that one coil to clear the a/c box, and he said that he DIDN'T have to do a thing to it, the engine went in easily and that coil isn't touching anything. I'm 99% sure he's using a complete 3rd gen a/c box and condensor, because I think he took the one that was in my convertible. I wasn't there when he put it on since I was working, but if anyone knows what to look for I can see if I can determine that the 3rd gen box is what he used.

Re: LSX Swap #2 - 1989 IROC-Z hardtop
He got to start it for the very first time tonight, and he couldn't wipe the smile off his face! We are both so excited!
We got a little scared because the first try, the key would turn and it wouldn't even crank. I remembered that when he swapped dashes and steering columns that we somehow had an extra Pass-Key box. I decided to try changing out the box before doing anything else, so I did and it fired up right after that.
Obviously the car isn't FINISHED, but it will be driveable after a tune and after he has the exhaust made. Cosmetically, we just have to finish putting the front end and hood back on, and put the center console and seats in. We got the brand new speaker grills, sun visors, and headliner put in today and they look fantastic.

Sorry for the really crappy pictures, my phone doesn't have a flash and the garage isn't lit up very well. The interior just needs the seats put back in and it's done. The car will be 100% completed after the seats are installed, the exhaust is done, ebrake cables installed, and tuned. Everything else is done!

Looks good, I been following your build.
Do all your gauges work?
I want to be like you guys when I grow up.
Only thing stalling my swap is money. I order parts when I can.
So for I got a 98 LS1,LS6 intake,water pump,harmonic balancer and wiring harness.
After I get the engine together then I'll get the parts for the car.
Any advise you can give me would be appreciated.

Speedo doesnt work because he hasn't bought the digital converter box yet. Tach doesn't work, we believe it to be a faulty gauge. We have another cluster were gonna try. The rest of the gauges work though.
My suggestion is to not rush yourself. Save money and do it once, the right way.

Did pockets do your harness?
Did he match up the harness so that it just plugged into your gauge cluster?

He made the harnesses for both cars. And he made everything from the firewall forward, nothing inside the car except the extension that comes through the passenger side for the computer itself. He didn't do any interior wiring for me, these cars didn't need it.

We put the front clip back on, just have a couple more bolts to put in for the chin spoiler, put the grill back on, stripes and emblems, and eventually we'll polish the silver '88-'90 IROC wheels he bought and put those on too. It's dirty as all get out right now, hasn't seen a drop of water since it was painted and it's been collecting dust.
He's got an appointment at the exhaust shop on Monday to get that done and when it's finished he'll have the tune done. So I'd say it's likely that it will be on the street making it's maiden voyage within 2-3 weeks.
The floor jack was holding up the k member in this photo. It doesn't actually sit up that high, although it does sit higher than normal. I think it has non-factory springs in it that raised it up since it used to be a track car.

Here's a "better" video before we have the exhaust made. Crappy iPhone microphone quality, sorry. I'll get a real video with my camcorder after he starts driving it.

Good news! The exhaust shop found that they were kinda slow this week so my dad took the car there today instead of waiting until Monday. I'm hoping the exhaust will be done at the end of this week, or by the beginning of next week.

I just watch the video on You Tube and I love it ! You guys did it again!
I see that you didn't fix the gauge problem yet.
The exhaust sounds great.
I know you can't wait for good weather to go have some fun!
Congrats!!!!!

Wow that didn't take long at all!! The exhaust is done already and the car is back home now. My dad drove it home today, said the thing breaks the tires loose without any problems haha
The tuner will probably be coming over within the next few days or week to get it ironed out, so it's pretty much done now. Somethin' is squeeling pretty bad I think it might be the a/c compressor or a bad belt, not sure.

Thanks man
I think if we end up keeping the 92 RS we just bought I'm gonna have to do a third swap

Here's her maiden voyage (you can hear the 4.10 10 bolt whine like a banshee around 2:20
) ... and the rattle noise every once in a while is the passenger side mirror, gotta figure out what's causing that. Other than that, it's tuned and ready to tear up the street, the thing runs like a beast for a stock LS1 and headers.

Re: LSX Swap #2 - 1989 IROC-Z hardtop
We put the pin stripes on today, and will be ordering the door decals and emblems tomorrow or monday. Also we will be working on refinishing his grey 88-90 IROC wheels in the near future to finish the look. He got to take it out to it's first show tonight and it was a lot of fun! It needs a few small things fixed like a good alignment and new front struts, an adjustable phb because the rear is off to the driver side about 1.5", and the ac is leaking freon I think from the fitting behind the compressor.

Still haven't got it on a lift yet to get better exhaust pics but these will have to do for now.
