Is your MSD box just sitting there or is it mounted to the intake? Or are you planning on moving it later?

Re: My 6.0 swap in my 89 RS

Well, saw a fellow LS carb guy on Tech pick up 30 HP down low and across the mid range with a 110$ HVH spacer, so i got the 15$ 2 inch piece and did some grinding to imitate the HVH CNCd version. Sure it is nowhere close, but a couple of hours of port and polish, it looks good and seemed to spin a little more in third gear:

Was not sure it was going to clear the 4 inch hood with the air cleaner, but all is well. If i got 15-20 HP i would think it was worth it.

Re: My 6.0 swap in my 89 RS

that tiny air cleaner is a big restriction as well FYI. Probably down a few HP just in that thing, I know I saw a air filter article where it cost a 350hp motor 9hp with a tiny one compared to no filter or the K&N with the filtered top as well made the same power in a 14x3 configuration.

Re: My 6.0 swap in my 89 RS

Yea, i will try it with and without at the track next time out to test that theory on my car. Probably right, i have just not picked the K&N filter up, paper filters suck, but ti topped off the car when i wanted it running ASAP.

Paper filters are tons better than they were 20 years ago.

K&N is an expensive way to let more dirt into your engine.

Re: My 6.0 swap in my 89 RS

Think so? I have always used them and never had any signs of small dirt depositing into and intake or carb, but i guess it would be so fine that its hould just go out the exhaust.

It's fine particles, and it grinds away rings/cylinder walls, and gets past the rings into the oil where it gets into other mischief.

Re: My 6.0 swap in my 89 RS

Well, i guess it would take a while. I have run open carb on motors i did not care about and never noticed anything from the lack of a filter over time after disassembly. Never thought a K&N would allow much past the cotton element.

Re: My 6.0 swap in my 89 RS

so it looks like that was a phenolic spacer? aren't most phenolic spacers coated in something? think the fuel going past the bare composite would be bad at all for the composite?

It is Plastic, the phenolic was twice the cost.

Re: My 6.0 swap in my 89 RS

ah, ok. just making sure you weren't going to saok this thing with fuel and then have pieces break off into your engine. that'd be pretty terrible.

i also wonder how close your dremel tool rendition works to the real deal that was designed with autocad and executed with a cnc.

Re: My 6.0 swap in my 89 RS

Well, i am going to dyno it with and without soon to see how it effected the engine. Another guy that has the CNC HVH version gained 30 HP low to mid range and 7 peak. So, if i got half that, it would be worth it to me. Mose vehicles gain from a regular 4 hole, so i assume, i didnt hinder performance. But alas, my lack of research and development i am sure is slightly off from HVH and others, LOL.

Re: My 6.0 swap in my 89 RS

he gained 4 peak, 30hp and 21 tq under the curve, but only 4 peak. i really think you should start to focus on getting that thing to quite wheelhopping before you add much more power...93mph is cool, but you're going to get stomped by a guy running 88mph if he can hook and cut a good light. you simply won't be able to overcome the distance he's going to put on you in the first 330'.

food for thought

Yea, that was the guy that made me get the spacer and grind on it. Otherwise, i still would not have one, LOL.

Re: My 6.0 swap in my 89 RS

New best last night, did way better than i expected.

7.6 at 94.8 MPH with a 1.8 60 foot. Got a 1.7 60 one pass, bit i was trying to shift early to see if i would pick anything up, WRONG, was still a 7.6 but at 92 MPH, shoulda stayed with the old shift point, might have gone 7.5 or better.

Re: My 6.0 swap in my 89 RS

how's the hood clearance with the 2" spacer on there with your harwood 4" cowl? i got a 2" HVH spacer on the way, wanting to get an idea of where the carb will be in relation to the hood.

Not much left honestly Matt, i couldn't even put a taler ait cleaner with a K&N so i stuck with the lower paper air filter so it would clear.

Got into a wreck today, will be partig the RS out to the Trans Am and replacement Camaro, the wheels, motor and rear will go in the TA. The T56 will go in the next camaro, i can fix the hood i think, but the frame is bent and to get it where i want would require too much cash.

Re: My 6.0 swap in my 89 RS

Was exiting one highway to a north bound freeway, looked down at the fuel gauge for a split second and then noticed cars scattering to avoid each other, tire smoke, screeching tires and i did what i could to avoid a 2008 ford truck, still got a piece of it.

At least i have a car that is set up with a strong enough auto to let me see what the 6.0 is really capable of, just allot of time and labor, you already know.
