6.0 L ls2/T56 swap in 91 Z28
6.0 L ls2/T56 swap in 91 Z28
so i figure ill start a thread now that ive started my swap. i have the ls2 and T56 which came out of a 2006 GTO with 24 000 miles on it. the old engione and tranny are out of the car and ive started the joy of ripping the car apart. for the next little while ittl just be de contruction as i have to wait for my order from hawks. ill be changing out the k member with a arms, brakes, rear end and also getting a few other things. i was wondering were to cut the hole for swapping from an automatic to standard? and im also sticking with the dbw , so will the bracket on my original pedal fit the new one? or will i have to make something new? i will try to keep up with posting and pictures(which may not look the greatest because there being taken with a black berry) the threads on this site have been more than helpful for me but ill still have the odd confusion so any comments or helpful tips are muchly appreciated.
thank you

Nice garage you have there! The project looks great. What are you ordering from Hawks?
Are you planning on retaining the GTO accessories or switching to f-body?

yes i am planning on keeping the GTO accessories. and from hawks ive ordered the spohn k member with a arms and coil overs, baer disc brakes front and rear, adjustable tourque arm with trans crossmember and drive shaft loop, moser 12 bolt, new fuel pump with harness and fuel regulator, a/c lines, rad hoses, 4th gen pedals, clutch master cylinder, headers, pro 5.0 shifter, shifter boot and plate, and im also getting them to do my wiring harnesses with the plug and play haha i think thats all of it but all of that should get here in about 3 weeks or a month. im also thinking i might have to get a new oil pan, Bruce at hawks wasnt to sure on the GTO oil pan has anyone else tried it??

Are you keeping the GTO shifter, or switching to the f-body style?
I set the engine/transmission in, used a punch from underneath to dimple the tunnel at the 4 corners of the shifter, then cut out the opening from inside the car. Had the shifter off and hole taped over when I did that.

(The end product looks better than that, I just don't have a pic available right now.)

I started my reply before you reposted. I assume you're going to an f-body shifter.

Nice to see that someone else is doing exactly the same swap as I am.
I´ve also bought myself a 2006 GTO engine/transmission package for my 1989 Iroc.
My crate is still on the atlantic ocean though, on its way up to me in Sweden. Waiting waiting waiting. Everything takes sooo much longer when you live up in Lappland.

IRS into a 3rd gen isnt something to sneeze at
They're usually as complex if not more-so than a backhalf
This guy is using a C4 IRS, but the procedure will be similar

Re: 6.0 L ls2/T56 swap in 91 Z28
You missed my point. You have to hack the crap out of the rear chassis/floor to put a C4 IRS which is rather compact compared to the GTO complete rear suspension
Re: 6.0 L ls2/T56 swap in 91 Z28
i will not be usuing the gto irs. ive ordered a moser 12 bolt. So i have the entire bottom of the car stripped and decided to start taking the undercoating off so i can paint the entire bottom of the car. Ive been using engine degreaser and a scrubber then pressure washing it off. this has worked quite well after you use numerous cans of degreaser. Im wondering what other people have used to strip this off?
Re: 6.0 L ls2/T56 swap in 91 Z28
so ive almost got all the undercoating off the bottom of the car so i can paint it up nicely, but now ive decided to start stripping it off the wheel wells aswell. using engine degreaser or any degreaser has kind of been working though it is a long process of scrubbing and pressure washing and itd be nice if someone had some magical way to get this crap off

Re: 6.0 L ls2/T56 swap in 91 Z28
hahha ya the lift makes life alot nicer and ordering all the parts at once will be nice when they eventually get here.. still not sure when that is happening. i was wondering if ill be able to use the fuel rail covers? im not to sure if ive seen anyone with it on there swap. ands i was also wondering what people are running down the track with a 6 L with a 6 speed. obviously times will vary im just curious to what itll go. the engines supposed to push 400 hp so it should go pretty good considering i should be losing some weight in the car. also my rear end will have the 4 10 gears, i figure that these will help a little bit at the track.
Re: 6.0 L ls2/T56 swap in 91 Z28
so ive begun to paint the bottom of the car, the pictures do not do the paint justice, i think the paint looks amazing. especilly for being on the bottom haha. none have my parts have even left hawks yet so im gonna have a little bit of time t finish all the painting on the bottom and the engine bay. ive got almost every nut and bolt buffed up, and the sway bars pan hard bar and control arms and in the process of being buffed so they can be painted black. seeing the nice paint instead of goopy ugly undercoating is pretty motivating. ill try to keep posting pics.

I think if I had access to a lift I would have painted the underside of my car blue also. Since I only had jackstands and ramps, I went with POR-15 because it's easier to apply and you don't have to make it look pretty.

Re: 6.0 L ls2/T56 swap in 91 Z28
While my drivetrain is out I'm planning to re-do the undercarriage too. I can't wait to scrape off all that undercoating and have it land in my eyes and mouth. I haven't decided yet whether I'm going to go with chassis black or body color, but either way I'll be spraying it... on my back.
Re: 6.0 L ls2/T56 swap in 91 Z28
Well there is my pallet of parts just before it left hawks today so now i have to wait about a week and a half until it hits the sweetgrass border in montana and go drive down to pick it up and finally get some progress on getting the car back together for spring.
Re: 6.0 L ls2/T56 swap in 91 Z28
so here are some pics of what ive been up to, i have the engine bay painted, the entire bottom, i buffed and painted the control arms, panhard bar and sway bars, so almost all the painting is done with finally, im just in a md dash to get it all ready for friday when my parts will be arriving.
Re: 6.0 L ls2/T56 swap in 91 Z28
well i was going to but i figure it gets right covered up anyways, the bottom and sides of it are painted. i also ran completely out of paint and i know if i buy more i wont know were to stop haha, so i left that for now, maybe paint it up another time, dont want to do everything in one winter or ill have nothing to do next winter haha
Re: 6.0 L ls2/T56 swap in 91 Z28
I kinda thought the front would get covered with whatever I rig up to cover the old air intake system. But I could very well be wrong. It really doesn't look all that bad if I clean it but right now its pretty dirty. And if it looks bad when I'm done or if I have time right away here ill quickly tape it up and buy another can of paint.

Nice job on that enginebay! I´m still trying to figure out what cables and relays to remove and sell off with the old L98, and what cables and relays to keep in the enginebay. Do you remember what the 3 relays just under the windscreen and the one really close to them on the inside of the drivers side fender on the drivers side are for? Keep under the hood or remove and include with my L98?

Re: 6.0 L ls2/T56 swap in 91 Z28
The relays on the driver side of the firewall are for the fuel pump and fans, at least on a non-MAF car. I think I remember my wife's '87 IROC having the MAF and MAF Burnoff relays there instead of for the fans. Anyways, I incorporated those three relays with my swap, two of them control the fans, and the third is still for the fuel pump. I left them in the stock location.
Re: 6.0 L ls2/T56 swap in 91 Z28
So my parts finally have arrived in my garage and so the problems have begun. I'm missing header bolts and clamshells at the moment, the fuel pump I got has a different electrical connectiong but I figure I'm just gonna cut the old one off and sauder it. With my 4 gen pedals I'm wondering if I keep the brake sweitches from the third gen or if the new brake switch replaces both, and I'm guessing my plug and play will connect to the new switch. Also am I supposed to be taking a gas line out now? It seems like one is not needed anymore. I'm guessing I just need a feed and return line?
Re: 6.0 L ls2/T56 swap in 91 Z28
painted the a/c unit, the floor is a bit messy from boxes and parts haha also didnt know that the headers i ordered were stainless so thats a bonus

I keep forgetting that.
