LS1 Tranny behind LT1 motor
Can a LS1 4l60e tranny fit behind a 5.7 LT-1 with no modifications, and if modifications are needed what are they. The only thing I could think of is the spacing difference from the torque convertor snout to the crankshaft different on an LS1 from an LT-1?
I bought a 4l60e from a 2001 LS1 and the bellhousing is all the way around unlike the original 4l60e from a LT-1 with is just like the 700r4's where the bellhousing has the cover that covers the torque convertor from the bottom.
Thanks,
Airick.....

No, the LSx Transmissions wont bolt directly up to an old style block. There may be a way you could do it, but I haven't heard of it. The LSx style 4l60E has a LONGER input shaft in addition to the obvious bell housing differences.
I think you'd be better off getting the right transmission for the job.

Re: LS1 Tranny behind LT1 motor
The TC snout and input shaft of the LS style are longer. Id sell it and source one of the cheaper older SBC/LT 4L60E's. LS style are more sought after so flipping it should be hard
Assuming you ignore the input shaft length issue and just got a custom converter to fit, it would cost more than a replacement tranny
It will bolt up to the LT1 without the converter... not sure where that came from

Re: LS1 Tranny behind LT1 motor
isn't the Tremec "retrofit" T56 just an LS trans with an adapter plate to mount it to a T5 bellhousing? I thought that the adapter was available separately too.
I'm not sure if this thing dropped off the face of the earth or what, but I can't seem to find any current info on it, and Spohn no longer sells it.
Here's one bit of info that I found from Sallee Chevrolet:

Re: LS1 Tranny behind LT1 motor
My engine is from a 1995 Trans Am and so is the tranny that I have on there right now, so do I have to get a tranny from a 1995 LT1 F-fody or the trannys from 96-97 are the same?
Thanks,
