What trans are you going to use?
Trans length is what determines DS length not engine

LT1 has std SBC bolt pattern so you can bolt up any Chevy trans ( within reason )
Early LT1's came with the 4L60 (T700) trans just like 3rd gen did

Re: Quick question

the motor and trans will fit in without issue and you can reuse your ds. the motor and trans from the 4th gens are the same length as the 3rd gens and the 4th gen aluminum ds's are a very common swap for the 3rd gen steels.

Get the engine AND transmission. It doesn't make a lick of sense to put an old TH700 behind an LT1 - the LT1 has a "PCM" - "Powertrain Control Module" - that controls both the engine and transmission. The 4L60E in the '97 is superior in all ways to any TH700.

The 3rd gen torque arm and driveshaft are both interchangeable with the 4th gen units (as long as we're not talking about the early 3rd gen 3-speed auto and 4-speed manual transmission models). While you're at it, you might as well get the driveshaft out of the '97 as well, as many of them were aluminum, and had a damping ring built into the transmission yoke.
