LT1 in my 83
LT1 in my 83
hey my names seth im a new member here but have had my 83z with lg4 and t5 for sevral years now i recently picked up a estimated 95 lt1 and what appears to be 700r4 out of a roadmaster for 400 bucks with hacked harness and no ecm i was looking for info on people who have carbarated these engines and done the swap but seems like theres a lot of flack about how dumb it is to carb it but its the path i want to follow do to simplicity and budget. iv searched the fourm for hours now and havent gotten any solid info or any build ideas i was wondering if any one has any experiance or knowledge of this swap. i would like to keep it a manual car and was wondering if my stock t-5 would mate or if a t-5 from a 95 v.6 woud mate. i know i need to convert it to a conventional dist. and plug the optispark hole and buy the carb manifold i will not be running a/c so will this motor literally drop in? any information that you can be provided with my swap would be greatly appreciated.
thanks,
seth

Now for the real question... what do you plan on doing with the ignition (since it is originally computer controlled)?
I believe you will need a special cam as well, the early LT1 cams were used to drive the oil pump and will not drive a distributor.
Than you'd need a distributor as well.

Re: LT1 in my 83
A computer doesn't know / care what it is controlling so long as there are 8 injectors and a dist of some kind
only difference being the length of the drive pin at front varies dependent on which style Opti is used
The gear that drives the Oil Pump in a LTX is the same gear that drives the dist and Oil Pump in a reg SBC engine
Think of a dist with the top part cut off ; that is what is hidden in the valley of a LTX

The honest hard truth Part 2 is that putting a carb on an LT1 is harder and more expensive than swapping an LT1 into a 3rd gen as a full-up EFI LT1.

I'm not completely familiar with the clutch set-up in a '99. I have heard of people putting 4th gen V6 5-speeds in 3rd gens, but I'm not familiar with the details. You might try searching the Transmission and Drivetrain forum.
Go ahead and stick with a carb. I would highly advise against starting with an LT1 engine, though. If simplicity and budget-friendliness truly are important considerations, you're starting off on the wrong foot. It's one of those projects that has a high probability of never being finished.
That's what I'm seeing, anyway.

Re: LT1 in my 83
Use this with a conventional dist and you'll essentially have a high compression 350 with a small aftermarket

I agree with five7kid, sell it and get a common 350 SBC
