I definantly want to replace my 5.0 tpi. of couse would love to have 5.7l ls1 but from what i hear the ls are very interchangeable. what do you all think?

that would be a gen III small block. similar to an ls1...

its doable, but not easy, IMO

that would be a cool swap though... and 600 seems like a good deal, especially with the wiring harness. sorting the harness out and whatnot would probably be difficult, but ive seen threads on how to do it

Read the LS1 swap sticky. There is a link in there to what you need to know when using a truck engine.

Offer them $350. Add $50 if they throw in the PCM and starter.

You can get a longblock with a guarantee from LKQ for about $350.

 

so if im shooting for ls1 performance, i would be better off saving and buying an actual ls1?

 

No expert here but the iron truck blocks are a lot cheaper and more readily available. They are also more durable. I would do what five7kid says.

 

The iron blocks aren't more durable. They may be stronger, but that relates to the power they can handle, not their durability under street power levels. They can also be bored out more in a rebuild than the aluminum blocks (my son has a 5.3 that was bored out to 5.7).

I'm not saying "do it". I'm saying understand the task. Starting with a truck motor will require spending a lot more money on other things (as documented in the sticky link) such as oil pan, accessories, intake, and exhaust, that would come with an f-body LS1 drop-out.

Also realize with an LSx swap, your current transmission becomes trade or sell-to-fund-the-project material. Trying to use it behind an LSx is an exercise in making life more difficult.

I was gonna give my t-5 to a friend for helping me pull the motor and everything. I ended up finding a complete 1998 z28 that runs and drives to get everything i need off of, then i will sell the solid body and try to recoup some of my money. thanks for tips!
