Re: GEN III in a 3rd Gen

Got the car weighed today, tipped the scales at 3380 with 190lb driver and 3/4 tank of gas.

Its lighter than I expected, but I don't have a parking brake, back seats, lightweight carpet, no washers, no power accessories, no speakers, no radio, aluminum radiator, lightweight flywheel, etc etc. I guess it all adds up. I will weigh it again at the track scales when I finally get a chance to go. Getting it tuned this week or next, can't wait to see the difference it makes. Also have a ported and polished throttle body on the way.

I'm fairly comfortable shifting and getting a T56 down the track, I made several passes with my previous 383/T56 combo. I'm hoping for 12.50's or better at 110 or so with stock internals. At this weight...shouldn't be a problem.

Re: GEN III in a 3rd Gen

I got the car tuned, but I'm still just not sure its "right". The LS1 certainly runs smoother and the weird idle problems are gone, but it doesn't have the amazing throttle response and honestly doesn't seem to pull as hard as it did on the stock tune. I don't have any tuning software, but the scaning program I use (OBD-COM) only shows 15* of timing at WOT under load. My tuner guy is a big believer in using a lower octane fuel with a stock LS1 (89) and tuning appropriately, but I just don't know. We're all going to the dragstrip soon and we'll make tuning changes there and look for mph differences.

Here's a video of 1-3 gears just driving by on the street.

Oh yeah, my T56 gets stuck in 4th...bad shift keys. I've ordered the input shaft and mid-plate to convert my old LT1 T56 for LS1 use, I hope to get that swapped this weekend. Owning 2 T56's does have its advantages!! I plan on sending my bad T56 to Tick or RPM later this year for a full rebuild.

On Power Tour now, 321 to the wheels on the dyno. I'm also planning on racing today on the dragstrip. High 12's? We'll see..

Terrible 2.1 sixty foot, but squeaked out a 12.98@110.36. Not too shabby for a stock motor!

What cities on the Power Tour did you do? My dad and I did Detroit/Milford, Muskegon, and Champaign in his 91 Camaro Convertible with a LT1.

No idea, but I ended up doing a lot of work (brakes all around, rear diff rebuild, tires, etc etc). I'd guess I've got at least 6500-7000 total in this car during the last year. I did sell a lot of my old-school SBC stuff though, so the total "out of pocket" expense wasn't but about half that.

Detroit, Muskegon, Champaign, and Madison. I tried to get out and look for other third gens, but the events were huge and there just wasn't enough time to get out there and see it all. My cousin hit a deer with his butternut yellow 70 C10 truck, so that kept our group busy patching it up to stay on the tour. You may have seen it parked at the evening venues...I watched the whole thing happen and it was a brutal 60+mph hit.

I had a blast racing though, but not a bit of traction to be found. My ET Streets are 8 years old and I need to just throw them away. 2.1 sixty foot, thats just sad. But the 110.36 trap speed made me smile, and I knocked down 26.2mpg on the go home leg from STL to Ohio. Videos of the tour coming soon...dyno, drag race, proving grounds.

Did you see a orange and black El Camino? It is an LS1 swap car that gorgeous inside, out and under the hood. Friend of mine owns it. His LT1 wagon made a magazine last power tour. http://www.rivercitycruisers.net/201...-dish-on-them/

It's outdated but has pics of his three pride and joys, also owns a couple second gens, a first gen, a Nash, and some more assorted car.

Yup, saw the El Camino, he was at the same hotel we were in Champaign. Awesome car! I also saw him trap 116 on the strip...sounded wicked going down the track. The yellow LS9 First Gen Camaro was beyond wicked, 740rwhp, street driven. Unreal power.

I had to work but wanted to go bad. That was his first run on the El Camino, he took it easy I gather. He is an awesome guy if you talk with him.

That truck was about 5 cars in front of us for a good long way and he pulled over right after a 4 way stop where there were 3-4 other cars waiting and I did see your car there too.

Re: GEN III in a 3rd Gen

Shot from the St Louis stop, just after doing some racing. I've developed a leak in my clutch master cylinder, sprayed brake fluid all over my new carpet in the driver footwell. Bummer...time for floormats I guess. I've also got to take the 9" out again, the driver side axle seal is leaking and the gears still whine. No problems with the new stuff...its the 1950's tech here that giving me headaches now.

Here's a recent shot of the car, since I realized I don't have any remotely recent pics. I'm moving back to Ohio, so I hope to do some more racing at National Trail this summer.

Re: GEN III in a 3rd Gen

Realy nice work!

I followed everything, but didn't understand too much. Don't have the expereince yet.. :/
The thing is I want to make a project car. I have 91 year birdy, but with nor engine nor tranny. I have found some 95-2000 birds with 5.7 and manual tranny.
So the question is - What do I have to do to fit the engine from one of those birds in my 91? Can I swap only engine, tranny, shocks, springs, wiring and tank or I have to drill some extra mounting holes and make some more mountings as you did?
Sorry for stupid questions, but want to be 100% sure what I need to do, before even start so I could save some money.
Thanks and cheers from Latvia!

Re: GEN III in a 3rd Gen

Chameleon Bird - That's a lot of questions, and most can be answered by reading the stickies at the top of this forum. You mentioned 1995-2000 "5.7" engines, note that in 1998 the Camaro/Firebird changes over to the LS1. 1993-1997 model years had the LT1. Do you research, and if this thread made it look easy it really wasn't...but I had the benefit of a good shop and several years of my own experience to make it much easier. An engine swap isn't really a "first-timer" type of project.

Couple of videos from the Power Tour.

Here's the 12.98 pass. Note the fishtailing 2.1 sixty foot.

Here's the dyno pull, 321 rwhp. Typical I think for a stock LS1, especially through a 9" with 4.11's.
