Re: My turbo 4.8l 87 IROC build
well now theres 3 pedals in there. next is my biggest part i think of this whole thing. i want to get rid of any old wiring that i dont need for the new motor. anything not needed for driveability. stuff like the factory ecm, a/c, heater etc. just want to have whatever is needed for the motor and the cars headlights, tail lights, wipers, windows, my aftermarket gauges, etc...

this is the stuff i need to find out what i can get out.

it does not weld sheet metal very good it can be done but will not be pretty. i used mine to patch my floor pan and what a nightmare. does great on exhaust work though.

Re: My turbo 4.8l 87 IROC build
if I'm thinking of the correct harbor freight welder ya'll are talking about, its a flux core welder?
Flux core is hotter than gas shielded and also has inherent splatter problems, but it can be used for even the thinest of metals if your good with it. I have burned probably 20+ spools of wire and I'm just getting to the point where I can make nice looking and strong welds. Gas shielded is worlds easier though

any gas welder is easy, i used them back in high school, my teacher showed me once and i caught on that quick, but this thing is a major pain in my ****. the rust is the inside of y car but the doors sill area so its not the floor its that sidewall and ive gone through a few pieces of metal trying to get it to my liking. next i try thicker metal

Re: My turbo 4.8l 87 IROC build
Just use the lowest heat setting if you can, and the thinnest flux core wire on the ultra thin stuff. I think you can get .030" wire as standard stuff is .035" I believe. I agree tho, flux core stuff is best for abit thicker stuff...especially on 16ga exhaust tubes. Works well on that.
Flux core is messy and dirty tho...gotta keep the area clean with a wire brush

u take the air grinder at it and then the wire wheel on the electric drill, takes everything off nicely. practice makes perfect. i think my strut caps and sfc's ill let my nieghbor do all the welding to those

looking good, not my preferred way to do the fuel pump but as long as it's sealed and safe it works. Project is coming along nicely, looking forward to more updates

your car is looking, nice progress you have going with it! Why did you end up mounting the alternator on the passenger side? What kind of turbo headers are you going with?

Re: My turbo 4.8l 87 IROC build
Be careful with wideband o2 sensors before turbo...the high temps and pressures can wear out the sensors quickly and cause false readings. Some sensors are better equipped to handle this application. NTK sensors (sold under NGK) work well. NGK Powerdex is another that has shown longer life compared to the cheaper bosch sensors when used in pre turbo applications.
I like putting the o2 after turbine.
Just commenting as it looks like those logs had bungs in them.

Re: My turbo 4.8l 87 IROC build
you know ive been hearing all different things about o2 sensor locations from different tuners. on one of my other builds i just put both o2's on the downpipe and had no issue. i hear thats not good cause it can tune one side of the motor wrong.

Re: My turbo 4.8l 87 IROC build
LSx may be abit different and require 2 o2's, one on each bank for closed loop. These would be narrow band o2 sensors. I'm not familiar with the software with those and when I asked around it seems like there is no "open loop" mode and it needs separate o2's.
For the wideband it doesnt really matter. Now if you did a twin turbo setup with dual exhaust, you'd want to check both banks to see how the air fuel is doing. I've done this with my build and found it was pretty even.
If the motor is getting even air distribution across all cylinders, it shouldnt matter if both o2's are in the same pipe. You can try putting them in the logs or somewhere in before the turbo for each bank of cylinders, but just keep in mind that the sensors may or may not last long.

think im gettin screwed on my headers. anyways got the fuel done, most the wiring done, gotta mount the battery and run the wiring. need to get a 2 bar map, lt1 spark plug wires and i think i should be able to fire it up without the turbo.
shift **** and vacuum manifold my pops made for me. tried to make him do it in 3rd gen font but he didnt want to. lol
