LS1 power steering pump blues

So though having some people think my car is supercharged and dont constantly try to race me.My power steering pump on my ls1 has a phantom leak .Its not leaking from the lines coming off the pump itself or at the connections to the rack.I tried tightening them a lil to be sure.It started randomly about a week ago,and the fluid drips around the alternator.I have no clue how to service these pumps, and replacing them is not cheap.

Has anyone got experience working on them that can point me in what I can try before biting the bullet for a new pump assembly. Thanks

may be a long shot, but check to make sure your reservoir hasn't gotten cracked or the seal between the reservoir and the pump hasn't some how gone bad.

Re: LS1 power steering pump blues

Both of mine seeped from the cap

First one blew a pinhole in the pressure hose. New hose and the front seal puked. What a mess

There is an O-ring between the reservoir and pump that doesnt like to get tweaked. The slide clips do a great job of holding it still though, so if you've never had it off, its unlikely the culprit

The return line used a pinch clamp from the factory thats not very tight. I swapped mine with a worm clamp for peace of mind

Also, not what you want to hear but 9/10 times if a PS pump whines, its shot

Re: LS1 power steering pump blues

Ive never had the pump apart, didnt know it came apart lol.I think it is leaking from the front since it drips near the alternator pulley. The whine happens only when the fluid gets low.Does anyone have an exploded view of how I can take it apart.maybe its just seals that can be changed, not sure.

Re: LS1 power steering pump blues

Pull the pulley off to get the front seal

Use a screwdriver on the clips to get the reservoir off

Thats as far as you can take it

Re: LS1 power steering pump blues

if the things that pocket mentioned are not the cause of your leak then it is most likely the front seal. pretty easy to do once you get the pulley off. the seal can be picked up from the dealer. Not the worst thing in the world......
