Seafomed the ls1 bird

Now i know this motor was well used and abused before I got it and its was high mileage and poorly maintained. It ran ok from what I thought..was slightly sluggish below 1500rpm and was going from rich to lean all the time on the driver side bank. This motor is due for a rebuild with number 7 gettin piston slap and loss of compression and leaks oil.I have switched to royal purple oil, trans and diff fluids and notice a good increase overall in performance.Tried some injector cleaner aswell as engine oil treatments and things ran smoother but then slowly went back to sluggish behaviour.

So I said screw it and lets see what the hype is about with seafoam during my next oil change.I expected the motor to be very badly clogged up and boy was it ever!Use a full bottle and it hasnt fully cleaned out yet lol but wow what a difference. It holds a steady stoich ratio, gained bottom end torque back and gas mileage has went up.

Word of advice to anyone who wants to do this and you know for sure the motor is very badly full of gunk.Do this near a bigggg open field..maybe even at night lol.I had fire trucks and cops searching for a burning house from it lol and shut the car off and ducked inside my house through the fog haha.

And heres a short clip of the mayhem:

Re: Seafomed the ls1 bird

I ran that thru the tpi motor and about 1,000 miles later the diaphragm under the plenum crapped out and I was blowing blue smoke everywhere. Coincidence? Maybe.

Re: Seafomed the ls1 bird

Ive read good and bad things about it.I know its pretty harsh stuff and not to leave it in for too long since it eats away at rubber, oil, carbon etc.Heard some guys having metal shavings in the pan afterwards.I didnt put the stuff in the gas tank or the oil.Just the vacuum brake line.

Yea im keeping a close eye on how things are going.this motor is already in need of tlc so it wont bother me if it finally dies lol.more motivation to rebuild and upgrade and not look back at stock.

back when carb's were still around all you had to do was run a little tranny fluid through the top....it normally did a good job of cleaning everything out......

Re: Seafomed the ls1 bird

Just the fuel and vacuum line. The reason I didnt do it through the front tb vac line is because of wanting to really clean out the rear cylinders compared to the front. And I think the results were evident this way using the brake booster line.

To me for the $20 i spent it was worth trying. After the motor is rebuilt,I wouldnt try this stuff unless I had alot of miles on the rebuild. It seems like its pretty harsh stuff and should not be left in longer than instructed or you could get issues as others have stated.

Re: Seafomed the ls1 bird

When I first got my car and it had a 305 I ran it through the gas tank and pour half directly into my tb. Guess I should've chosen a better time since my exhaust was off at the time... but yeah got the fire department called on me lmao. No issues with it at all and it ran so much better, much more throttle response.

Your gonna want to change out the oil soon. Do that WITHIN 300mi. It'll be super gunked up and black. Changing the oil after a sea foam treatment is VERY IMPORTANT.

Is this only if you add it to the oil directly? Was under the impression this wasn't required if the seafoam was added to the intake and fuel.

Nope. If you do a seafoam treatment you change the oil soon afterwards.

Re: Seafomed the ls1 bird

hmmm just seafoamed this weekend 1/3 via charcoal canister vac line and 1/3 into the half tank of gas. Missed the part about changing the oil at 300 mi. Have to check the oil getting black. Funny tho no smoke at all on that 1/3 into the TPI.

Re: Seafomed the ls1 bird

From the seafoam site:
The most frequently asked question about using Sea Foam® is as follows: “After using Sea Foam® in my oil, fuel, or through the vacuum line (to clean carbon from the combustion chamber) do I need to change my oil?” The short answer is: No you don’t have to change your oil after using Sea Foam® in any application.

SKEL why do you say within 300 mi?

Re: Seafomed the ls1 bird

this is no different than using gm top engine cleaner. maybe slightly milder. no reson to change your oil unless you allowed it to soak past the rings overnight and feel your oil in contaminated with it. I personally dont feel anything above ATF is needed when cleaning the oiling system. (5quart system.. 4quarts oil 1 quart ATF) if its that bad where a few cycles with the atf didnt clean you surely have underlying issues

the only reason I would see a failure is...

A... you sucked too much in too fast and hydro-locked the engine and damaged the bearings or bent a rod.

B... you were thinking (good old mechanic in a can!) and youre issue would be fixed by a half hacked approach when the real issue was never addressed or even properly diagnosed... then the real issue just gets worse as it would anyway regardless of the half attempt at a repair

Re: Seafomed the ls1 bird

I was told the same thing by many guys who have used seafoam. You dont have to change the oil...but after doing a topend clean up..why not put in fresh clean oil aswell. Not going to hurt in doing so..just better reassurance that you know you got everything out and fresh oil now circulating in the motor after is been cleaned and beaten on.

Re: Seafomed the ls1 bird

Ive used seafoam a 6years ago with no issues. Put a full can in the gas tank, half in the oil and the other half in the vacuum system and used a full can of the spray into the TB/Intake area. Ran the car for 100miles and changed the oil right after. Oil came out DARK BLACK and very diluted. Car has been drag racing and taking long trips ever since. No issues
