So I have begun my restore of my 88 Z28. Plans are to swap out my 350 and 700r4 with a LS1 and T56. I have a decent working space I set up. The car sits now on 8 foot long ramps that are about 1.5-2 feet high. My question is, do you think theres enough room to drop the motor and trans out from the bottom? I also have a backhoe available to assist like a cherry picker in lifting the front of the car.

some people perfer out the top, some out the bottom. since you got enough room there, id pull the whole k member and lift the car off of it. but id take it down off the ramps to do it so you can easily wheel the k member/motor/tranny assembly out of the way then lower the car down on some jack stands.

Well, I can set the car on jack stands as it sits. Also, there's ramps I can attach at the end of the main ramps. I could use the backhoe to assist in wheeling the motor/trans off the ramps. Another question is, how much can the k-member/motor/trans pivot? Like, lifting the tranny up from the tail shaft, how high can you lift it and still be able to wheel everything around. Because if it an piviot a good amount, there's plenty of room to have the tranny tailsaft drop to the ground and be able to wheel the unit out from under the car as it sits now.

if you drop the kmember as a whole, you can leave the wheels attatched. which since its sitting on them on the ramp, youd have to move the ramps out of the way and support the car from the front subframes.

only down side to doing it out the bottom is you have to disconnect the brake hardlines from the propotioning valve, which means you have to bleed the whole system when you get it back together. not that big of a deal, but some people hate bleeding brakes....

I don't care about brakes or anything since I'm upgrading just about everything on the car. I'll take a second look tomorrow and see how much room I have and If I can position jack stands well enough to support the whole car safely as it sits now. I'm pretty sure I can though. Thanks for the input.

youll have to elevate the back wheels some to keep from bottoming out the rear end when you lift the front high enough to clearn the kmember/motor/tranny assembly.
all you gotta do is support the kmember, unbolt the struts from the strut tower, undo the brake lines and all the other connectors from the engine, remove the drive shaft unbolt the torque arm from the trans, unbolt the trans mount, then unbolt the 6 bolts holding the kmember in place. then lift the car off the assembly, lower it to the floor, and roll it out of the way.
