Engine from a burner....who's bought one?

So my '02 LS1/T56 pullout should be here in a couple of weeks, and I've already got the itch to upgrade.

I found an '04 6.0 LQ4 with 56k on it that is in a burned truck for really cheap. I have not seen pics of it, but I am seriously considering going to look at it. Now my thought is that if I can sell the LS1 motor/heads/Ls6 intake, I would replace it with the Lq4 motor/LS3 or L92 heads/Ls3 or L76 intake. I only would do this if I can pick up a low mileage 6.0 cheap. I won't need any of the motor's top half/accessories/wiring.

My question is this......Who has any experience with buying a motor out of a burned truck/car? Is it worth the risk/reward? I don't want to just throw a few hundred bucks away, and I don't want to have to do a rebuild. But if this works out, I might be able to break even on the motor swap. I know I have seen some threads about people buying these burned motors, but have been searching this morning and can't seem to locate them.

Obviously I know there is no way to be sure, but if there is anyone that has done this, I would be interested to hear your story, and how it worked out.

Thanks!

Re: Engine from a burner....who's bought one?

No one has any input/advice on this? I know I saw some posts somewhere on here that mentioned motors out of burned vehicles. Damned if I could find it all day long. I just didn't know if the bottom end in these things usually would need a rebuild or not.

I think it might be worth the risk to at least try it. If anyone does come up with some advice, let me know. I think I will go look at it in the next couple of weeks.

I might be interested in the ls6 intake... And a 6.0 with unported ls3 heads and a ls3 intake with the correctly specd camshaft would be pretty stout

If its cheaper id go for it for sure. Bigger bore, more head selections, and lots of other benefits to. Only downfall if you wanna call it one is weight.

As for checking the motor, it "should" be fine. If it got a light burn id imagine its fine. Find out where the fire started. And not alot to damage except plastics such as the engine cover and belts if assume. If you can gets some pics of it. They'd tell the story.

got a 6.0l ford diesel engine at work from a burnt truck ended up using it for a core because the cylinder was all rusted due to the chemical used to put out the fire
so it might be a good deal but it might not its a gamble

Re: Engine from a burner....who's bought one?

This is the kind of info I was looking for, thanks for that guys. I found out that the engine has been sitting for over two years, and the guy said it was a bad burn. He won't send pics, so I am starting to think it might not be worth it. I am not looking to do a rebuild. I know it is a risk and there is no way to tell, but I might be better of buying a high mileage one out of a known good running truck for cheap money. And then I can sell off some of the top end stuff.

If I do indeed go through with this, I will be trying to sell the short block complete with intake first as it will be more appealing to a buyer. I will keep you in mind!
