i have a mufflex y-pipe that i used with the sbc and was wondering how much modification is needed to make it work with the lsx swap headers or if it will even work

 

Good luck, you're better off building a new one from universal bends than trying to tweak one for a different engine

 

You'd really have to get the motor and headers on, then check the y-pipe for fitment. Im almost sure its not going to just fit up...and also pretty sure you'll be doing quite a bit of tweaking to it.

Most of us abandon all stock y-pipe configurations and come up with our own (or an exhaust shop's own). Its just easier in the long run to do it how you want than trying to make something else work when it comes to the exhaust.

really though I went to out my old y back on and the manifolds sat way to far up which made the y hit the frame. Even with headers im sure its a no go.

 

I thought about trying out an aftermarket LS y-pipe to see how close it would be, but ended up just making my own. Cheaper that way, but if you already have one, no harm in lining it up and seeing how close you are.

 

at this rate someone could make a few bucks if one were to have a shop make 50 y pipes for the swap with shorty headers / manifolds and sell them off $100 a pop.

 

shhhhh, that's my get-rich-fast scheme

but i completely agree; untapped market. keep it low cost (cause if you're doing shorties, you don't have the cash for long tubes), keep it simple, bolt up to stock/aftermarket catback.

 

Only issue you will have with mass producing them would be not every car is the same.

I agree with making a new one. If you swaped the motor in what's the point with skipping out on a y-pipe. I know you won't see it but to make it fit will be just as much as it you did a new one. Just my 2 cents tho

 

I spent about 140 bucks on a builders kit of 2.5 inch mandrel bends on ebay. Actually could have settled for one of the cheaper kits with less pipe. I had alot left over. If you have any welding ability and fab skills i would not waste your time with your current Y pipe and just build your own. Im running long tubes but making a Y for shorties or manifolds should not be any harder really.
