selecting a cam

yeah, so judging by the title of this thread, i'm sure that question has been done to death..

but.... i think i'm looking for a little more technical answer...

basically... i REALLY don't know much about cams or durations in general...

I mean, i'm not a complete idiot but when someone tells me they have a 268/276 i'm not sure if that is mild, aggressive, or even if i'm giving you the right numbers to judge by .....

with that said...

i understand WHAT duration is, and lift.... i just... don't know the difference between the numbers.

Re: selecting a cam

If you're looking for a cam for your own build, you're in the same boat I was in a while back. All I did was call Mike Jones with my engine, trans, and rear end specs, told him what I wanted the car for, and he gave me his recommendations. (I purchased the cam he recommended by the way). I've since been picking up little bits of information. 268/276 to me is mild, although not sure why the exhaust duration would be bigger than the intake duration.

Re: selecting a cam

wow.. i typed a LOT more in that post that didn't show up...

oh well... got the point across i suppose.

Oscar, i'll definitely take that under advisement, thank you!

ok.... so i think i figured (something) out.

i want my LT1 to sound like this...

and....... he was even nice enough to list what cam he used...

but the question remains, do i need to change the push rods if i put that cam in?

crap.... well i guess that part of my original post didn't show up.... ok i'll start over..

The point of my original post was to say, i know what duration is, i know what lift is in general, but...

lets say you start with STOCK as a baseline... if you get a cam with a longer duration, it basically changes the time that the valves are open/closed.

lift basically changes the distance that the valves open..

so if you get a cam with a larger lift, does it usually assume that the rest of the cam lobe is at stock height? or in general does the entire cam lobe grow in diameter?

i.e. do you need to put shorter push rods in it because they will not close all the way with stock push rods.

I do know that on some super aggressive cams, you DO need to change out the push rods as well....

if i go with a cam like what is in that video,

"Bullet 226/230,565/565,111LSA cam" (((whatever all that means))) will i need to change out the push rods too?

OK...... before i get flack , i do not plan to change out the push rods unless the ones in my motor are significantly worn and warrant being replaced. same with the rollers etc.

if i HAVE to, i will... or... well... if i HAVE to, then maybe i'll just leave the motor as is until i have enough to buy it all at once... but if i DONT then i will swap the cam.

and i do know that -technically- you should always replace each of those things, as well as the valves while you are in there..

[valves, springs, lifters, cam, guides, blah blah] i understand that AND why... it's common sense.. everything seats together, and putting new to worn parts will reduce the life of both new and old.

but......... i've got 800 into the motor and transmission, 65 into the fuel pump, 13 for a bracket, i still have other things to buy for this thing to get it all running, and i'm seriously trying to stay UNDER 2,000 for this build total to have a running driving car again..

so far i've been doing really well about being able to fabricate crap and make changes to make the LT1 work in my car, trying to keep cost to a minimum right now, yet have a bad *** sounding motor that has a decent amount of power before i start souping it up.

i still have to wire, tune, fabricate exhaust (including the y pipe), replace the steering box, figure out various hoses and tubes etc... most of that will cost money..

Point is....... i want to find the biggest cam i can that does NOT require me to change other components to make it work. (aside from the valve springs which i will do regardless, whether i buy a new cam or not just for the sake of doing it)

......... sorry..... i think there's a question in there somewhere

What is the biggest cam i can get for the LT1 without having to change the length of the push rods? ((which is something i don't really know how to do and don't have money for))

Re: selecting a cam

hmm... apparently when you google "Bullet 226/230,565/565,111LSA" nothing but that video shows up. not a product lol

Re: selecting a cam

ok i'm going to correct myself.................

i'm going about this all wrong...... i just need to figure out what cam will do what i WANT the motor to do, and just build the damn engine accordingly...

but..... some of those questions are still valid, and i'd like answers when possible lol
