99+ 4L80 swap

From my search I found some info for the older 80 swap behind a sbc, anyone use a newer unit yet? The hawks 1 3/4 and the fat Trans and pan will make for a PITA for a x member and running my dual exhaust as usual I'm sure.

Need some more warning for what I'm getting into.

Re: 99+ 4L80 swap

Yeah, mine was an 03

Fluid line in the rear and the strange pan were the only differences from the older units I noticed and neither had any impact on fit/function

Great! Think I'll make the Trans x member connect to sub frames. Seems it would be better all around and relocate the TA arm to it as well.

Re: 99+ 4L80 swap

Trans is out of the 3/4 ton. Looks like it will be pretty simple. Just wondering how lucky I will be to make the dual 3 inch that was for my T56 that fit my th400 fine will fit this long Trans. Converter is in as well(3800).

Re: 99+ 4L80 swap

I'll be damned if revmax didnt build me a 3800 4l60 converter. Teach me not to BS with the tech while ordering. Since I didn't pay attention to the build sheet I put fluid in it and realized when I was going to install it on the Trans. Couple hundred for shipping and cutting the new wrong parts open to clean and sell as new, I went ahead and upped the 4l80 piece to 4000 stall speed.

I got their Stage 5 version because of the power the stroked 6.0 could make.

Speaking for myself, the LS1/4L60E car seemed to like it last year:

Well, I used one in the TA, it is in the mustang now. Works great so far. It is a 4500. Foot brakes 2000 on the street with 235/60/15 junk radials.

Seems like they work decent. I think I'll hit them in a month or two for a 3500ish converter.

Tight fit the more i keep hooking stuff up. Still was enough for the TCU harness to plug in. Going to work on the X member today i think.

Talk about a PITA to get the brackets to work for the shifter. Made it happen though.

Admittedly a different application, but I didn't have any problem using B&M's bracket. I'm using the stock PRND switch, which requires a different bracket than non-PRND switch applications.

I'm going to wrap the cable housing with heat tape, just in case.

One more brace has been added to the passenger side since this pic. Should work, but i had to make the TQ arm relocate over to clear the tail housing and yoke. Still have to pull it back apart, finish welding the spots i couldnt get to and throw some black over it. Still need to wire the trans controller in, finish plumbing and make a TPS sensor bracket. The drive shaft will hopefully be done today.

How much lower than stock did both of your trans pans end up? is it lower than the subframe rails/crossmember?

Usually about even with the sub frames give or take a slight touch. Never had a issue with any of that. Think my aluminum th400 pan has been the lowest but is thicker than all other sheet metal stamped pans.

Making the brackets were the most time consuming part of the install. I ended up using 1/2 a 80 shifter arm welded to 1/2 a 700R4 arm with a modified 80 bracket

Mine was a shoestring budget using the stock shifter/cable so it was a bit different

After it was complete, I saw a pick of a tight clearance bracket flipping the cable 180* towards the engine. Wish Id done it that way from the start

Can sort of see it here

For mine, the header collectors were lower than the stock trans pan or crossmember

Wow, i have no room to complain about that after at least having a bracket made for the swap and just being able to tweak that and the shifter arm. Good job as usual pocket.

Re: 99+ 4L80 swap

I'm just wondering if I'll be annoyed with it in a significantly lowered car? The suspension setup I'm tempted to put on the current TA is off of my '83, which I ended up flattening 2 stock 700r4 pans in (they wouldn't it on bumps, they would hit on a high speed dip...)

Hoping the change get the pipes tucked up higher. I'll probably have pics when I get it to the exhaust shop.

Re: 99+ 4L80 swap

Feels fantastic. Set the tuner to shift at 6400 till i get the tune right witht he engine. Otherwise, she feels great for being a 198K mile 4L80. Hooks pretty decent for the most part as well. I will dial the pinion angle back in where i want it when she is on the lift for exhaust. Might be spot on for all i know. But the 5.3 does not make the torque of the 6.0.

Will be ready for daily drive duty in no time.

Re: 99+ 4L80 swap

So far. I am the first I know to try the edelbrock 2216 carb LS cam. Wants more rpm as you can tell. Plenty more in her with tuning. Then I'll hit the track. I'd be happy with a 8.0 1/8th mile. Anything faster and I am really happy. Friends 5.3 went 7.8, he had ported heads, mine aren't. He had 3600 converter and 3.90s. I have 4000 and 4.30. Also o have aluminum block to his iron. Will be close.

Shucks, I was hoping to see/hear overdrive and TCC lockup...

You didn't do a shift kit, right?

Nope, bone stock 198 K mile trans from the 01 3/4 ton that got crushed on Xmas by 2 pine trees.

Lock up comes on just above 2500 rpm. Think it is perfect so far. Still have not run it past 6400 rpm yet. Going to retune the TCU in a bit. Exhaust is on and thank god. Was just way too loud. Now I can think.

Re: 99+ 4L80 swap

Upped the shifts to 6900 and it hits perfect. 4L80 with high miles and the TCU work as well as they can.

Re: 99+ 4L80 swap

Doing great, took her to the track, the best was a 7.7 in the 1/8th at near 91 mph. 1.75 60 foot. The revmax converter is tight, but dang good for the street driving the wife and i do. So, i cannot complain. Went a tenth faster than i expected!
