Going back in after replacing the crank & damper because the damper spun on the crank snout taking them both out, new rings & bearings while we were at it, shaving the heads for better CR, changing the cam and injectors to more appropriate pieces.

Nice motor but grotty engine bay, so I'd go with ashamed.

Nope. The part I'm talking about could very well be in a 3rd gen, though. Very much so.

It all started back in early '11 when my son's S10 pickup was hit by a Honda Accord in a snowy parking lot and the frame was bent. The Accord driver's insurance totaled out the S10. He had a 5.3 already that he was planning on putting in the S10, so he started looking around for a platform to put it into. He looked at several 3rd gens, none were worth the effort, then happened upon this 2001 S10 Blazer that already had an LS type engine swapped into it, for less than the insurance had paid him. So, he picked it up, and the journey began.

The iron block was looking pretty sad.

Weren't sure what color to paint it, black was a consideration, of course, but we didn't have a can of black engine paint sitting around. I bought a can of aluminum paint because my 6.0 aluminum covers had suffered in the Florida salty air it grew up in, and his weren't much better, so he grabbed the can and started painting. After everything is installed, you can't see any of the block without looking really hard, so I doubt anyone is going to ask if it's an aluminum block because of the way it looks now.

(Okay, true confession time - I had already done the same thing to the 6.0 block...)

Re: Should we be ashamed of ourselves?

The accessory bracket hole for F body accessories is one of the two things that makes me know it is no a aluminum block. The other is the 5.3/4.8 casting. Aluminum blocks don't have it. Not to mention no 4.8 exists in aluminum for as far as I know.

That is my 5.3. Ran out of carb cleaner so I didn't get it as nice as I wanted. But, being it will see daily duty and get nasty I didn't worry too badly. It is the aluminum 5.3 from my trailblazer my wife just totaled.

Re: Should we be ashamed of ourselves?

Hahaaa nope. Nothing wrong with styling to taste imo. If selling the car and telling someone its an aluminum block when its not? Then yes thats shameful, but for fun or style or even the confusion factor? All good imo.

Well, I guess I'm a bad influence. It wasn't about style. I wanted to paint the aluminum stuff to keep it from getting grungy, and didn't feel like masking stuff off to paint the block some other color. This was easy, and came out looking decent, I think. He grabbed the can after I was done and did the same thing.

And, no, this isn't a build-to-sell project. Not trying to deceive anyone.

I was surprised, though, how little of that shiny block shows up when everything is hooked up and running.

Certainly wasnt trying to infer that you were up to this at all, merely pointing out for the rest of "us" who may read this when we should be ashamed.

I like the look of clean myself and the silver looks at home. I love the all black engine look too it always looks pure business and meannnnn.

Many years ago (okay, 1991), I was talking to a guy who had a shop in a light industrial area who told me he painted his engines black because black didn't show oil leaks as well. A couple of months later, the shop was locked up, and somebody tacked a note on the door that said, "You have my money, where's my engine? See you in court."

I hate black because it is harder to see any leaks.

Had a 6.0 in it from the 89 RS. Spun a bearing. This is from my trailblazer since the wife totaled it. Need another ride on the road ASAP.

So you're worried about the looks of the block, what about the rest of the dirt, grime, rust and funky wiring?

Re: Should we be ashamed of ourselves?

I like it as ive never been down for looks as it gets you nothing but a trophy. Its the way I would do it. Function over looks as its not how purdy it is, its how fast you make it to the finish line. Just my 2 cents tho

I wouldn't mind having things look good, just not a priority. Function is the first priority. If it needs to look good to function better, then I'll make it look better.

Some day I'll get "Ugly Betty" painted, but until all of the mechanical things are addressed, paint will have to wait.
