3 Wire to 5 Wire MAF Wiring ?

When going from a 3 wire MAF to 5 wire MAF is there a cleaner looking way to do the conversion than using the adapter harness? I don't want all of the extra wires hanging there. It is possible to buy the connector from mouser, disassemble the two connectors for the 3 wire setup, and assemble the new 5 wire connector? I rarely see any newer vehicles in the junkyards near me so it may be hard to find the 5 wire connector on a truck.

Which MAF are you going to use? I'll be using an LS3 MAF on the 2003 LQ4 swap into my shoebox, it has a 5-wire connector but not the right one. I'll be cutting off the LQ4 connector soon to splice in the LS3 type.

Re: 3 Wire to 5 Wire MAF Wiring ?

I cut my two plugs off and soldered/heatshrunk the 5 wire in. The adapter harness was too big and bulky. If the pins in the 5 wire plug are the same as the IAT and MAF in a 3 wire, I don't see why you couldn't de-pin your old connectors and install them in a new 5 wire plug.... I do think they are different though, I just can't remember for sure.

Re: 3 Wire to 5 Wire MAF Wiring ?

I was planning on using a truck or 01 Z06 MAF. Based on the excerpt from Pocket's post below, it looks like the terminals are different in the connectors. They are crimp connections though right? How hard would it be to just disassemble the exising connectors and crimp the new terminals on? I don't think I've ever disassembled a connector like this, so I'm not sure how hard it would be. Just wanting this to be as clean as possble.

Idle Air Temperature sensor (IAT)
3 wire LTx/LSx MAF/LSx crank/LSx cam sensor
Truck 5 wire MAF
Separate IAT is used on 3 wire MAF installs. 5 wire MAFs have a built in IAT. The LSx crank and cam sensor connectors use the same body and terminals, only wire color changes
