Mini Update:
Got my wideband gauge hooked up. It was always wired to the megasquirt for dataloging but now I can see it going down the track and lift if I need to since I'm expecting to go out of pump or injector eventually.

Also bought an autometer boost gauge at the flea market for .50 cents. The needle was stuck on 1 psi so I pulled it apart and bent the needle back to 0 LOL. Works great. Learned a valuable lesson too. Don't splice it into the vacuum line going to the MAP sensor. It will cause it to lag like hell and run crappy!

I looked through the thread and realized I mentioned it but never posted pics of my wastegate muffler! Originally it was just dumped through a hole in the fenderwell, but when it opened it was so LOUD it felt like it would burst my ear drum and it scared my wife every time it opened. No all you hear is turbo whistle. Here's a few pics.

First I cut a hole for the flange to fit through

Size: 112.5 KB

Then built piping and muffler to fit and tucked it in the fenderwell. It's a 1.75" glasspack about 14" long. I modified the bottom of it to clear the sway bar when the suspension compresses.

Here's what it looks like bolted up

And lastly with a tire on and it does not rub at all. It works even better than I expected and it also flows fantastic with no boost spike! I've built a few more of these to go in the engine compartment too if someone wants one or wants one built PM me.

That wastegate muffler is a sweet idea, and would make an external dump wastegate much more civil. Since you wanted it quiet, why not just tie it into the rest of the exhaust?

Thanks!! LOL Because my downpipe is only 24" long and dumps in front of the harmonic balancer
Originally I had planned on mounting the wastegate only the crossover pipe in front of the throttle body instead of the merge. Then it would shoot the exhaust right into the downpipe. Then I just figured this would be easier and put the wastegate in the merge.

I love this build Kyle. Has me looking at 4.8s in a whole new light. Have you read this article before? Lots of good info here too...

Selling already? Shitty man but ya gotta do what ya gotta do.

I must say Parting it was WAY easier to get some money back outta the car. I went through this on my old Red 87 Iroc-z

If you decide to part there may be some things I may be interested in actually. Assuming your comment means you are thinking of selling....

Best of Luck!

it's tough to put a number on it man. your best bet is to put together what you need to have out of it to be in the black. my car is insured for a cash agreed value of $25k, there is no way someone would pay me that, but i also have a sentimental attachment that money can't fix.

Yea I hear ya on the sentiment. I've had this car for nearly 10 years. I think I will just keep it. I would have to get 10-12k for it anyways to sell it and I doubt I could get that much for it. It was 3am and I got really excited about starting another project. I bought my wife a 94 XJ jeep cherokee and thought it would be so badass to drop in an ls1. Scratch that last post LOL!

I've been thinking really seriously lately about dropping a 5.3 into my 06 rubicon and getting the adapter plate to make the factory jeep 6 speed manual work with it. I hear guys are getting like 18-19 mpg around town with 5.3 swapped wranglers! So tempting! Wouldn't sell my car for it though, thats for sure, lol.

Alright so obviously something is going terribly wrong. Lean spikes while getting out of it then getting back in it when the tires spin according to datalog (middle row, red). Top row green is my TPS aka my FOOT! I'm thinking it's time to upgrade the fuel pump. Looks like it has to catch up then starts flowing correctly.

When it torched through, it welded aluminum to the block

It honed out after I scraped most of the aluminum off with a screwdriver.

Re: 86 IROC - LS 4.8, Truck Accessories, Megasquirt 2, GT45 Turbo!

Obviously some things need to be checked this time around. I'm built a timing tab out of some scrap and will flow test the injectors to verifiy correct commanded timing by the megasquirt, and that all 8 injectors are flowing correctly.

First I found true TDC with a dial indicator

Name: IMG_0265_zps14499488.jpg
Views: 1470
Size: 103.5 KB
After, I put 2 washers on each timing cover bolt. then I welded scrap steel to the washers and ground it flat.

Name: IMG_0266_zpsa313b4c9.jpg
Views: 1459
Size: 81.7 KB

Then I put the belt on to determine position and decided to make my pointer adjustable so that if the pressed on (no key) balancer is removed, I can easily change the aluminum tab to correct the pointer.

Next, I lined it all up with my alterntor and made my marks. 2nd mark is 15* so I can check it at idle by commanding timing at 15 deg and looking down next to the alternator to verify with the timing light.

To find the distance on the tab is pretty straightforward.

Degree per inch = Circumference / 360

Found 15* is exactly 1.01" so measured it up, painted the pointer and done!

Name: IMG_0271_zps05c8d22f.jpg
Views: 1721
Size: 101.5 KB

Tomorrow I will be rigging up a flow test bench for the injectors.

Weren't you on a single 255 pump? You were playing with fire all along man, lol. I knew it was only a matter of time. Turbo engines LOVE fuel, and you do not want to run dry under boost! Live and learn haha, but luckily, pistons are pretty easy to replace in these things. I've replaced 3 of mine already with the motor in the car. Thank god for my tubular k-member

Get her back together with some fuel and crank up that boost!

I took it out and broke a trans mount so wasn't able to get a solid pass. Now it's closed for winter. These toyos don't like cold ashphalt at all

Re: 86 IROC - LS 4.8, Truck Accessories, Megasquirt 2, GT45 Turbo!

Ok so here is my ghetto injector flow test. Someone mentioned that since I keep damaging the same cylinders that possibly the injectors are not flowing the same amount. Here's what I came up with.

Name: IMG_0277_zps625041b9.jpg
Views: 1442
Size: 94.8 KB

First I weighed 4 cups to make sure they were exactly the same weight. Then I cut holes in some cardboard and put in cheapy dixie cups the same distance apart as the injectors.

Next I cut the tops off of 4 more cups, drilled holes in the bottom for injectors to fit through, and put them upside down on the other cups

Name: IMG_0278_zps4ace7e38.jpg
Views: 1417
Size: 62.5 KB

Put the cups under the injectors and then used megasquirt's (tuner studio's) output test to fire that bank of injectors at 9ms which is the same length of the pulses at WOT in high gear according to my datalog.

Name: IMG_0280_zpsb181a0f7.jpg
Views: 1445
Size: 85.1 KB

Lastly, I weighted each cup individually and recorded the value. Then I converted the grams to percentages so I could compare cylinder to cylinder and bank to bank.

Name: IMG_0279_zps89a0d1fb.jpg
Views: 1405
Size: 55.9 KB

Name: IMG_0283_zps669da3f4.jpg
Views: 1437
Size: 95.9 KB

What I came up with is that the biggest difference in injectors is between 7 and 8 and is a 3.0-3.2% difference in flow. Not exactly sure what that means yet. I ran the test 3 times to verify the values and they came out mostly the same each time with only a .01-.03 gram difference between tests (negligible IMO). Also since the lowest flowing inj is injector 7 and this time around I burnt piston #5, I think I'm going to rule out injector variance as the cause of my problems.

Ha dude my grin was so big when I was bouncing off the limiter on a burnout a few weeks ago. It sounded so nasty and made so much smoke. I really wish I had that on video. I'm ganna make sure to post one cuz it was just nasty!!

Anyway a couple more updates. There was so much aluminum flake burnt to the exhaust valve and cylinder head that I wanted to check the seat to make sure it didn't have crud in it.

Made this tool out of a c-clamp, a small sliver of angle iron, and a grinder. Seat appeared/felt fine.

Love coming here for the updates, sucks to see the bad updates though! Turbo still holding up good? I'm slowly starting to buy stuff for my build next winter. Gonna be tricky with a baby coming in July though!

Look forward to some good news on it.

Re: 86 IROC - LS 4.8, Truck Accessories, Megasquirt 2, GT45 Turbo!

BDR, ha thanks yea I'm gettin quicker and quicker at it. Not sure if it's a good thing or a bad thing lol

Sean!!! Thanks man, it's been a heck of an adventure so far! Got married october 5th now get that 4th gen in sc so we can hang out like old times

Jay, glad you're enjoying the thread! Gotta take the bad with the good I guess! Either way I make sure to at least learn something new every time something goes wrong so I can also look at it as a learning experience and an opportunity to try something new (experiment). Congrats on your baby btw!! The china turbo has held up beyond my expectations and makes more power than I can use right now.

I'm with you on the tight budget! This whole go-around piston swap only cost me around $125. I reused the same head gasket for the 3rd time, put in an $8 stock piston and rod. Heck most of the $125 is fluids, oil antifreze, brakeparts cleaner, etc. That's the beauty of doin it all yourself and using stock parts. Good luck on you build too!

Re: 86 IROC - LS 4.8, Truck Accessories, Megasquirt 2, GT45 Turbo!

Thanks Kory and good luck with your turbo project!

I got the car running today and drove it around to seat the rings. I fired it up and revved it at different rpms, changed the oil, then drove it to work and back 30 miles. Seems pretty good. Now we just need some good weather so I can really enjoy it!

Re: 86 IROC - LS 4.8, Truck Accessories, Megasquirt 2, GT45 Turbo!

Drove it on another 45 minute trip on the interstate and everything seems fine now that I've got the idle squared away. Just doing a little tuning.

I checked my nifty balancer timing tab and it's showing that commanded ignition timing is actually about 2* advanced from where it should be.

Anyway here's a video from my phone.

wow just read and watched through this thread, great project...keep it coming, a real gear head you are. simple and cheap trick on the rear quarters to make it an easy clean up from a night of burn outs, rub the body with baby oil. Rubber will fall off and wipe off with ease and wont hurt the paint. Thumbs up !

haha Thanks! So do you put the baby oil on first to keep the rubber from sticking or do you use baby oil on it after to break down the rubber?

Also little update, I plan on taking the camaro to the track for some testing and tuning either this coming weekend or the next hopefully.

Re: 86 IROC - LS 4.8, Truck Accessories, Megasquirt 2, GT45 Turbo!

11.3 @ 126

Dang it ha. I couldn't get the toyo tq tires to stick off the line. Best 60 on them was 1.88. I did however go 120 on just 7 psi at 3650 lbs. Once I turned the boost up a little though the engine started to nose over at the end of the track and someone told me they saw smoke at the 1000 ft mark. I think this block is why I keep having problems with the same 3 cyls, so I'm keeping an eye out for a shortblock and some better ties. More to come. sorry no vids.

Ha Matt I wish I had a video. My buddy's camera crashed and somehow took all his video and pictures with it. It was nothing spectacular. Just more slow off the line then rocket down the track. I'm really disappointed in these toyos though. They're great on the street but they suck at the track. Nowhere near how good the hoosiers drag radials or slicks were. I'll prob just run these on the street.

I'm really fighting the roll bar. On one hand I can make as many ***** out passes as I want and not worry about getting hassled by tech. On the other hand I loose the sleeper image and make it slightly less safe on the street. Plus new cars like ZL1, ZR1, GT500 etc run around the same and they roll out the dealership without bars. Maybe once I finally run a 10 I'll put something in.

Awesome track numbers! Sounds like you are some suspension mods away from hit a 10.99. Gonna look for a Gen4? I am keeping my eyes peeled for a L33 local. So far the closest I have found is like 10hour's away . My buddy is nagging me everyday to buy my 4.8L so if I can scoop up a L33 Id sell it. Scrap yards around here suck!

Agreed. I haven't been on the street much with the chevelle, (has the toyo's) but i can already tell they're not going to be a real "track tire". maybe it's time for a 15x10 with some m/t 275pros?

i have a lot of beef with that logic.
1)Those new cars have no less than 10 air bags around the driver area where as your car has zero. Also the unibody construction on these newer cars is FAR suprerior to our primitive first run unibody designs. our cars are wet noodles man, they need a TON of help. not so much in the newer cars, especially not the vettes. those things are really well put together.

2)as far as no sleeper look:
- with the mainhoop tucked tight against the b-pillar, and tinted glass, along with painting it the same color as your interior, the roll bar basically disappears. if folks are up close enough to see the roll bar, they're close enough to see your crazy waste gate muffler thing in the wheel well and will easily tell something nuts is going on.
- if you're worried about your wife not wanting to climb in, don't put the passenger's side door bar in. you ONLY need a 5pt to be legal to 10.00. that's main hoop, two rearward bars, and driver's side door bar.
-make the door bar removable for the street, which is still perfectly nhra legal.
-pad the top of the mainhoop so that if you hit it with your head in an accident, it's no different than smacking the side glass or b-pillar.

be fast...but be safe man...

Re: 86 IROC - LS 4.8, Truck Accessories, Megasquirt 2, GT45 Turbo!

To put some input in on the cage.... I caged my last car and after that I started to hate the car. Door bars in the way etc. I had to do some wiring under the dash and it made it a living hell. However you can hide the cage pretty decent. From the side it wasn't visible. Also if you dont own a trailer like myself its pretty hard to stuff a set of slicks in the back of a caged car.

My buddy actually had a MINT 97 TA that he did a 10 point and 370 LS etc. After 1 season he sold the car. Was either cut the cage out or sell it bc it pissed him off so much lol. And he had door bars also.

But when it comes to safety I understand. If you are a huge track guy and the tracks are strict, may as well nut up and toss a cage in.

removable door bars solves the inconvenience of daily in/out, as well as any under dash work.

place the rear bars here (endorsed by a well known shop in our area, with some very fast cars, IE this is Jeff Moyer's car) and you still have your trunk. rear seats will be useless, but that honestly doesn't bother me much cause they're useless in a car without a cage. This car obviously has a 25.x chassis, i'm merely posting for placement of the rear bars.

Re: 86 IROC - LS 4.8, Truck Accessories, Megasquirt 2, GT45 Turbo!

Good points on the cage Matt and Jay. I know if I will eventually need to cage it. I can totally see both sides of the arguement that's why i'm still up in the air with it. I also don't have any money for a cage right now.

Did I mention i was at 6 grand in the trap with 3.08 gear and 26" tire? I've got major slippage somewhere prob the converter. So my priority right now is new engine > tires> fuel system > torque converter > cage. As crazy as that sounds I'm more worried about my car bursting in flames than anything at the moment, but I'm constantly checking everything like a hawk that it's all in good shape.

I'm for real big time budgeting here. I've reused the same head gasket 3 times. Reused the same coolant I've drained out twice, using $8 high mileage takeout pistons, Ebay china everything. To make things even harder, Right now I just work part time turning wrenches. Paid a lot less but 10x happier. I'm still able to save up for parts though so just gotta wait till I have some cash on hand. Eventually I want to go with a machined block and forged pistons. Maybe bore out a 4.8 to 5.7. Then really crank up the boost.

OK I would definately do something like this. Is this NHRA legal?

Re: 86 IROC - LS 4.8, Truck Accessories, Megasquirt 2, GT45 Turbo!

Update: I stopped messing around with the 4.8. Obviously whatever is going on with that block is preventing me from pushing it to performance level I want out of it. I've double checked just about everything, so screw it I got this 5.3 from a local junkyard for $550 out the door on friday. I plan on keeping the stock cam in it and just swapping valve springs. It's in the car now with the help of some awesome friends, pizza, and beer.
