Holy good lordy that is a sweet build! You have come so far! This is an awesome build thread! I can't wait to see some track times with MT's and more boost! Are you going to use the trickflow cam later?

These type of builds are what keep me going on my 5.3 swap.

"I also decided to pull the LS9 cam and put in something a little more moderate in specs. In went the super cheap Trick Flow 216/220 cam. It has a 114 LSA and .560x/.560x lift."

The majority of the time seemed to be the factory cam then he tried the ls9 ans wasn't to impressed.
The trick flow one gave him gopd numbers though!

Hey yall!! wow thanks for the kind words! VERY FLATTERING!!!! I'm really happy that other folks are finding the thread useful! Seriously every time I read kind words it makes it all worth it even more.

This is the trick flow cam I used in the 4.8 which is $287 free shipping
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/tfs-30602001
The car went 120mph on just 6 psi with it and at 11 psi ran 128 blowing the engine along the way. I give it 2 thumbs up.

Right now in the 5.3 I'm still running the stock cam which seems to be working pretty well. I still have the TF cam in the garage and might throw it back in later on. Soon as the track opens back up for winter I will run it with fresh rubber and hopefully be back with some good times.

Till then here is a sweet burnout I did today to hold yall over I goofed at first and threw it in neutral after I hit the 2step. LOL

man I like this build and it makes me wish I had went a ls motor.my procharged 385 with holley hp efi only went 2 tenths quicker than your 4.8 and I have a lot more than 4000 in it. makes me want to cry. when your piston broke what do you thick caused it? the reason I ask ive been running mine almost a full year and running it very hard and it has done awesome until last weak it started to knock.I pulled it down and my piston looks almost identical to yours only worse.it was a 750 dollar set of mahle forged pistons. any ideas?

Re: 86 IROC - LS 4.8/5.3 on E85, Truck Accessories, Megasquirt 2, GT45 Turbo!

I've read a lot of theorys on why the pistons go like that. Seems it's usually 1 of 3 things. 1) for whatever reason (too lean, too much timing) knock happens and fractures the piston or torches it. 2) running too rich washed the bores causing ring seal to fail resulting in the heat not disipating or whatever and torching through or the fuel burning in the lands. 3) rings too tight and they butt causing ringland to pop and torch that area.

It's all theory and we can't look inside the engine to see what is really going on. I'm sure others here with more knowledge can elaborate more.

Still might keep it. I'm not going to just give it away, if I can't get what I want I'll just store it for a while.

We are trying to get out of the hometown and find decent jobs somewhere. I'm buying an RV.

Thanks yall!!! I miss the car but still feeling good about selling it.

It wasn't about the money. It's an awesome car but after 10 years and 20k+ I just wasn't having fun anymore. I wanted to dump another 6k into it for upgrades and it's hard to do that knowing how these cars just don't bring much money no matter how modded.

Anyway thanks again for yall's support over the years!

Sorry Jcash442!!! I came pretty close. I wish I had got the 10 sec slip too, but at the end of the day it's just a #. I had a hell of a lot more fun racing it heads up on the 1/8th than I did with white nuckles at the end of the 1/4. The car took the WHOLE shut down to stop too LOL That car went straight as an arrow though. With the $$$ I was able to buy an RV and start a new chapter in my life. I will own another hotrod one day and do it right. This car was an invaluable learning experience.

really? SDR has a 1/2 mile or more shut down....i could almost coast to a stop from 128mph there....as a matter of fact, it's the longest shutdown i've ever been at. i almost went off the end of the track at a couple of places up here cause i was spoiled by SDR's long shutdown, lol. there are a couple of tracks that my current 135 mph trap speeds make me really nervous at.

The throttle body cable part almost clears but I dinged the waterneck a tad with a ball pean hammer.

Next is the alternator moved to the ps side. For this I used washers, long bolts, and a turnbuckle, all cheap from tractor supply. I added a bolt to the turnbuckle so I could lock it down.

Attachment 350256

Now fuel system on a budget took some thought. What I ended up using was an 2000 s10 filter regulator wix part# 33100. Then I borrowed a doubleflaring tool and bubble-flared the quick-connect barbs for rubber efi fuel line and efi clamps so they wouldnt slip off. This included all 3 barbs on the filter/regulator and the ls1 fuel rail inlet. I osed no more than 12" sections so I could pass nhra tech. Oh yeah on the 33100 the inlet is 5/16 and return is 3/8. if you hook it up backwards you wont get fuel pressure.

Attachment 350258

Fuel pump is the jegs walbro 255 inline pump. I used my old carb filter as a prefilter with a piece of rubber hose around it. This way I can monitor to make sure fuel is getting to the pump. Basically I just spliced it into the factory fuel lines.

Attachment 350259

Now it took 3 tries but I got the right size belt and tightened it up with the turnbuckle tensioner. 74.5" belt

Attachment 350260

Attachment 350261

LS1 throttle cable is expensive!!! For the time being I used a piece of old bike brake cable.

Attachment 350262

Attachment 350263

Tried to make as much room for turbo as possible so I cut the rad core support some. Looks like my fat old griffin is not going to cut it here, I will be using a stock one but it should work fine since the ls1 cooling system is so efficient.

Cool thread. Im doing the same swap minus the turbo. Do you think you have enough room on the balancer to do a setup like this in the pictures?

1) You bumped a 6 year old thread, and the original poster has already sold the car.
2) You could have asked me, since that picture was taken from my build.

For the record, YES, you obviously have enough room on the balancer for the A/C compressor belt, that's why I posted above/ below pictures.

1) I didn't know it would be hassle to.bump a 6 year old thread

2) I think his alternator configuration is a little different from yours and I was gonna go with his and not buy any brackets, thats why I asked him. No big deal to me.

I just wanted to make absolute sure that there was sufficient room. Now I have my answer. Thanks for responding.
