Swap help asap!!!!
Swap help asap!!!!
Alright i need some help im kind of at a stand still on my swap i have a few questions.
• i modified the k-member for a/c do i need to modify it for the oil pan clearence?
• i bought hawks swap mounts that bolt to k-member is that the only piece i need to bolt up the motor or do i need adapter playes as well?
• do i need to modify oil pad in order to fit? If so how would i go about doing that?
• im thinking on trying to tackle the wiring on my own to save money how hard is it? What exactly do i need to do? Someone was telling theres to seperate harnesses one the the motor and a whole separate one for the fuse box is this true? Or is it all on harness?

Re: Swap help asap!!!!
You need the 4th gen engine side mounts.
Some people have gotten the pan to clear without any mods, but they all attached the engine to the K-member outside of the car, I believe. Makes more sense to mod the K-member than the pan if mods are necessary.
More detail on your car and what harnessing, etc, you got with the engine would be helpful.

Re: Swap help asap!!!!
As five7kid stated, you will need the 98-02 Fbody engine mounts to work with the kmember side mounts. Truck style ones are not compatible.

I did not modify my x-member and I can still slide a piece of paper between my oil pan and x-member. Just makes it a pain for me to get to the bell bolts because the engine wont tilt back at all.

Re: Swap help asap!!!!
My 98 f-body pan sits about a 1/4 inch higher than the x-member. I beleive the swap brackets are made for F-body LS mounts (Cheap from parts store) and NO adaptor plates. Take your mounts to the parts store and compare the mounts. I bet they are different. as far as wiring , you have lots of reading to do. You need to have a good understanding of what you are doing before you cut your 1st wire. Good luck and keep us posted. Read Pockets post at the begining of the swap threads.

If you have the swap mounts that bolt to the Kmember, you must have 98-02 Camaro or firebird clamshells that bolt to the engine block. There is no way around that, the truck mounts are completely useless to you in this situation. The poly inserts are optional to install into the 98-03 Fbody clamshells.

Re: Swap help asap!!!!
I'm researching like crazy for a swap. I found this video on how to do LS conversion wiring.
This site is a huge help... READ EVERYTHING
http://www.lt1swap.com/index.htm
Another good site:
http://www.lsxtv.com/
Here is good info on the accessory drives:
http://www.carcraft.com/techarticles...e/viewall.html
I've made a list, detailing all different aspects of the swap.
Fuel system, electrical, motor changes (intake, accessories etc) frame modifications and engine mount needs.
As you write it down, it will start to make sense, and then you do more research and things change.
In doing all this, the swap SHOULD go pretty smooth.
My plan is to mock up the motor and transmission outside of the car (wiring, accessories etc) and hope that once it comes time to actually put it in, it will be smooth without any major surprises.

Re: Swap help asap!!!!
Check out the LS1 swap sticky at the top of the forum. I wrote several articles going into great detail of how to build your harness starting with any LSx harness and how to tailor it to your 3rd gen specifically
Re: Swap help asap!!!!

Re: Swap help asap!!!!
Pocket has basically put together a spoon-fed article to wiring these swaps. I understand being a visual learner, if you print off his threads to read through while you are sitting with the harness you are working with to look at, it helps a ton. Having the visual of your harness to go along with his pictures and, (in my opinion) very clear instructions cannot make it any easier. You won't find a video documented swap harness that you need, because there are no two exactly alike. It might be one of those situations where you are better off to pay the money to get a harness made if you aren't comfortable enough to attempt it after reading all the information thirdgen.org has to offer.
I have done searching on other forums for ls swaps in different vehicles, and nobody even comes close to having the in depth info we have here. We are truly spoiled with the mass of ls swap documentation specific to our cars at our disposal that most any other car community envies.
Might be one of those things that even though its not complicated, its just not for everybody. I.E.: Setting up rear differentials isn't complicated, but I have terrible luck doig them, and know I am better off to pay the 175 bucks plus parts to have it done.
