ls1 swap

ok ik this thread has been started like a billion times, and ive read the guide but I have a few questions. my car is a 92 Camaro with a 305 tbi t5. and its all about to just blow up so I got a ls1/t56 (complete with all acceries, engine harness and computer) from a 4th, 2001 maybe. the goal is the cheapest swap possible (but done not half ***, and until I get the extra money to put all the good extra stuff)

I now I need the rad hoses.
the fuel lines need to be changed.
lsx motor mount conversion plates.
new trans crossmember.
new y pipe.
im keeping the a/c so the currect k member will be notched.

that bout sums it all up correct? what about the driveshaft?

Re: ls1 swap

Read the sticky again. Ds is clearly covered

You left out the harness modifications, PCM flash, fuel pump, custom Ac lines, clutch pedal mod etc

Just a tip, but read over a lot of builds and gather all your swap parts before beginning tear down on your camaro

Re: ls1 swap

I done a lot of reading, using the search option is also key, there is a lot of write ups, it would be great if there was a complete video on each major section of a swap. Wiring, swap pieces, installation. I was lowering my camaro along with every car I own haha, So i looked at best product for ground clearance. Even with all the write ups and threads its hard go read every single thing, and pics arnt always there specially in the older threads that Pocket has made. I must have read the swap sticky 35 times or more since I started my swap lol, pick up and find new things.

Now I know what the swap is about the next one in a 3rd gen will 150 times easier and so much faster. So take you time, plan it out and read or watch what videos you can find.

Also if you don't know don't be afraid of posting your question here. Also LS1tech has some great info when it comes to the wiring some stuff that I couldn't find here, if you are doing that yourself.

Post up some pics too !

Re: ls1 swap

Sounds like your doing my swap! I have the same 3rdgen and an 01 SS donor car (totaled).

Pocket has a lot of great info and I think holds the record for cheapest LS swap. Streetdemon has a pretty good thread too. He used the mid length hedmans headers which might be good for your build if your lowered. I admit theres so many build threads and everybody did something different so that makes it a little confusing. I haven't started swapping yet but I've done a lot of reading. The only part I'm concerned with is wiring. I'm hoping when i sit down with the harnesses in front of me, pockets threads will make more sense to me.

Awesome! That's good to know. I plan on getting them too and I'm lowered with weight jacks.

I'm going to attempt (no promises) doing a video of the swap. I just buttoned up most of my wiring, but have taken a few pics along the way. I'll do up a video of the process if I do a video for the rest of the swap. It's -30c here, so likely -20c in the garage... I'm not interested in messing around setting up the video camera when I can't feel my fingers lol.

Wiring is easy... seriously. I've had a couple questions here and there, but once you read, research and educate yourself it's easy. It's funny to be able to look at a wire harnes and know what colour wire goes where, or what pin is for what wire, or how your relays will be wired up. There's enough info on this site alone.
I put up a post with wire diagrams of where every sensor goes pin wise, where they get power/grounds etc etc. It's very helpful and I used it last weekend to get my harness worked out and hooked up to the ECM. Compared that to a pin out sheet I got from LT1swap.com (great resource) and it really wasn't that difficult.
However, I did spend 8 hours cutting and soldering on the living room floor last sunday, mostly because the scrap yard cut my harness at the computer.

On the surface the swap is cheap, but there is always another part you will find you will need. However, since you have an engine and transmission and accessories you are ahead of where I started... I have an engine, no accessories, an LT1 T56 I have to convert etc.

Re: ls1 swap

an LT1 T56 I have to convert etc.
Im beginning to rethink needing to convert LT1 T56's for LSx swaps. Using the CTS-V pilot bearing, the input shaft is supported and a generic LS1 clutch/flywheel fits. Figuring out the HTOB mount is the only hurdle. Its not a "totally wont work" issue like was posted in the past

Also read a kid had a machine shop redrill the LS1 flywheel for the LT1 PP and used the LT1 fork setup

Re: ls1 swap

the clutch mod mod I read about, and the a/c I was thinking of leaving undone for now. but the wiring harness needs to be modded? not as simple as replaeing the computer and engine harness then, ima read about that when I find it. and the pcm needs to be flashed? and the fuel pump I knew bc the fuel lines need to be changed.

thanks guys and don't worry im sure ill have many questions ill post. think since im going from factory ill make a vid.

what about the factory driveshaft and torque arm?

If I had the extra bit of $ to experiment with this I would, it sounds like it would actually work.

Driveshaft and torque arm are the stock ones. The TA mount on your T5 swaps to the T56.

The harness modifications really are not that difficult. Most of the wires are left untouched, the only ones that end up being "modified" are the powers and grounds... It's simple honestly.
The stickies at the top of this section are great. And once you have a harness infront of you and you start tracing wires and pulling things apart it will all make sense.
As far as the clutch pedal... I'm going to try using the T5 master cyl and modifying it to fit the LS1 clutch line. Apparently it works just fine.
