LS Swap Suggestions and Debate (Motor, Trannie, Issues etc)

I have already read many articles on these topics, its just they dont necessarily suit my situation that well, so Im sorry if information gets repeated or if questions are asked again.

I have a 1987 Camaro V6 car with no air conditioning. I am hoping to do an LS blank swap this winter, and am just throwing options out in the air of what I am best off doing for the tight budget that I am going to be on.

Probably the most easiest swap it seems to be the LS1 from 99+ Camaros with the 4l60E transmission. For this it seems that the easiest way to do this is to just buy a parts car, but being in Canada, its hard to find one in the first place that is any good without paying a huge price tag, and thats just to start the swap.

The other option, which seems more do able price wise, and doesnt hurt power or anything like that, is a 6.0L LS from a truck. Now I have read through the threads that discuss this . I would like to use the stock intake, and accessory drive. I know about the clearance issues, and the ram air hood seems to solve that. However, the guy that I was talking to about buying the motor from says that his friend has a 6 litre in his third gen. This is where it gets intersting, and I have a feeling that this guy doesnt know his friends car (Which I hope to inquire about seeing) as much as he thinks he does. Supposedly, he has the motor in his camaro with the truck oilpan, running the stock 700R4 trannie, truck manifolds and only has a two inch cowl hood. He is also supposedly using the truck motor mounts. I dont know exactly what truck this motor came out of, but the one that is being sold is out of a Tahoe, or a yukon (theres two to choose from).

So this is the situation that I am in. If what this guy says about the 6,0L is true, that is hands down the way to do. If making the 6.0 L work is a matter of switching the hood, oil pan, motor mounts, and manifolds (I would like headers anyways) and still using the stock transmission(even finding a 4l60 isnt that hard either), once again still seems like the cost effective way to go.

If all of this is bogus, and I NEED to switch the intake and drive assembly (which means finding a non VVT motor, or spending more money to get the thing to avoid that which is mentioned in another thread), then this will probably still put me around the same price range as the camaro LS1. But like I said, in Canada, they are hard to find and when you do find them, they are expensive.

I am not worried about looks that much. I feel confident that I can make the 6L, even with its ginormous intake and alternator/ac braket look half decent. Plus, for the power gains, and probably fuel economy too, plus cool factor, it seems like a decent trade off. I am just stuck between which route to pursue further, and start gathering all of the required information for the swap that I choose,

So any one (particularily 6.0L swappers with the stock accessory drive and intake) that has any light to shed on this subject, pitch in please. I want to make a big chart or something on this so I can make a justified decision properly. I am not the best mechanic, but have fabrication capabilities and the tools to get this done properly, so that really isnt an issue. Its mainly the choice, and it helps to get input from people that have actually done the job.

Please post pictures too, they are really handy!

Thanks a lot

Ben Davis

Truck manifolds don't work, they kick out too much to the sides from what I hear.
Before I did the swap, I read a lot and decided to save headaches I would just track down an LS1 from an F-body... Found one for $1400... Sounds steep at first, but when you consider I got an LS6 intake, the right oil pan, the right computer, manifolds that work, etc etc it was worth it in the end for me... Finding an auto is a lot easier than finding a T56 here in Ontario... It took me months to find one, and it was an LT1 style so I had to switch it to the LS1 style.

I'm from Simcoe originally and I head home every so often, hopefully a few times with the car... I just did my first 60 km or so with my swap and man oh man was it worth it!!

Around here I struggled to find a ls1 under 16 or 1700. And it was a 99 with no accessories. I managed to pick up a 5.3 for around 400 and I'm in maybe 5 or 6 for the pan and intake plus fbody accessories.

Don't know what your budget is, but Cleveland pick-a-part is not terribly far, and they always have a selection. I know they ship outside the US.

Low mileage with everything:

Re: LS Swap Suggestions and Debate (Motor, Trannie, Issues etc)

If an LS1 comes along before septemberish for a half decent price I would be all over it. But they are very hard to find. Unfortanutely, I would like to keep the budget around $3000 total. May seem slim, but I think that it is doable.

If I can find a decent 6.0L for a cheap price, then swapping the accessories and intake would be an option too. I also remembered a possible problem with the power steering pump hitting the steering box on the truck accessories? Like I said, this thread is just discussing options, and I am just trying to gather all the information and routes I can before I decide for sure.

Any info on Truck block to 700r4?

You should also consider a L33 5.3L
They can be had for 1/2 the cash of a LS1.
A 5.3L with an LS6 cam will make 350horsepower with stock manifolds.

This seem possible? Change the intake and accessories, oilpan, low KMs. Wiring already done...

That pan looks pretty similar to the stock truck pan. I'm pretty sure it won't work.

Here's a thread I created a while back that might help.
