Help with LQ4 and T56 install 1988 Trans Am

Hey there,

I am new to the site, but I have done swaps of this caliber before. I have a few questions specific to the LSx/T56 swap. Since joining this site I have been searching for the answers to these questions, but having found a YES/NO answer to my questions.

1. Do the Spohn and 1" set back plates position the LSx engine's in the stock location?

1a. Are there other/better engine mounts to use?

2. I currently have the 5.0 TPI and 700r4 trans and would like to reuse the aluminum driveshaft and stock torque arm that are currently installed. Would using a Spohn/1" Setback plates allow the driveshaft/torque arm to "bolt in"

3. Is the 98-02 Fbody oil pan the most common oil pan to use with this swap? Are there any other/better options?

I currently have a 01 LQ4 that I will freshen up and installing fbody accessories, LS2 intake, and 98 T56 transmission. I have HP Tuners along with the unlocked computer so the tuning isn't an issue.

I have all the components and am looking to do this as "cost effective" as possible. I believe the only components that I have left are the vehicle specific parts. (headers, mounts, etc.)

Thanks in advance,
Ryan

My understanding is 1" setback mounts maintain stock transmission/engine mating point, which allows someone using a stock length trans. and wants to keep their stock driveshaft.

I think Holley PDFs have comprehensive measurements of their pan. Also get some measurement images of the various pans. The F-body pan is closest to ideal in stock offerings. It's easy to see why the F-body pan has better clearance compared to a bat-wing when you're looking at dimensions side by side.

Do more reading here and on tech if you still have these questions at this point in the game.

Re: Help with LQ4 and T56 install 1988 Trans Am

1) There are two main types of mounts that can be used for a LSx conversion into a 3rd gen. The first uses adapter plates and the SBC K-member mounts and engine clamshells. Basically any plate that looks like this will work regardless of brand or home-fab

The second are the hawks/spohn frame stands that utilize 4th gen LS1 engine mounts. The frame stands bolt to the K-member in the V6 rearward position. They are also known to sag slightly on the pass side

2) Yes to both. Beware 700R4, T5, 4L60E and T56 TA mounts are all different, so grab the matching piece or fab something

3) Its the only option for a stock K-member. C5/6, Holley and other pans work with tubular K-members
