89 GTA LS3 engine swap
89 GTA LS3 engine swap
Hi guys,
I have an 89 GTA Trans Am and I am playing with the idea of an engine swap. GMperformance crate engines has an LS3 430 h.p. motor that I am very interested in. Has anyone swapped the 5.7 original with an LS3? If so any advice? Does the original 700R4 tranny work? Any extra parts that will be needed?
Thank you

Start with the above sticky, it says LS1 one but most of the same principles apply to LS3 as well.

Welcome aboard thirdgen.org.
The sticky will give you the basics of bolting it in. Details will depend upon exactly what you get. The controller kit they sell for the crate engine is a good idea if you can swing the cost.
TH700 behind an LS generally isn't a good idea. But, if that's all your budget can handle, it can be done. Biggest problem is the LS3 is drive-by-wire, and the TH700 requires a throttle cable to operate properly - by the time you resolve that, it may make more sense to just get an LS-style 4L60E.
