4.8 Advice
Hello,
Hope you're all staying healthy and safe! During my current furlough situation, one of the current projects is getting the engine ready to go. All I know is that it's a 4.8 from a 2000 Silverado 1500 auto that had ~150k miles on the clock. I never heard it run but was told it runs very nice.
So far I've purchased most of the gaskets, and I'm going to get those all switched out. I am switching out the camshaft, springs and the like, and the one thing I wasn't sure about was the head gaskets. I haven't seen any signs of them being an issue, but would it be recommended to switch those out with some new Fel-Pros? It would also give me opportunity to lap the valves and clean up the intake ports, since they are very nasty.
I understand I have alot to learn, so any advice or input is appreciated! Thanks.

Re: 4.8 Advice
I did head gaskets on my 4.8 build, but that was just because I had the heads off for decking (took off .020 for a slight bump in compression)/ valve-job, and new springs and seals.
I'd recommend you do the same if you have the heads off.

Re: 4.8 Advice
I'll be doing valve seals, springs and most every gasket that is not the head gasket @dixiebandit69 . My original plan was to leave the heads in place, but I'm now wondering if I would be better off tearing the heads off for some fresh gaskets.
I know that head gaskets are generally a "If it ain't broke...," so I'm just on the fence about it.
As it's a 2000, it has the notch and so graphite head gaskets are the way to go. I wouldn't worry about getting the heads decked unless they're not flat.
Thanks

Re: 4.8 Advice
I would at the minimum take off the heads, clean them and install new seals and the right valve springs for the cam. I would also take the time to replace the lifters with some cheap LS7 replacement ones along with new lifter trays. Don't reuse the stock headbolts. Get another new OEM set. Sure, this adds a little bit of cost, but I think it is money well spent.
