I have been looking for a good cam to run on my ls1 it only has heads springs lifters anything valve train related was done but not the cam because I can't choose a good cam. I've been looking for one with a good chop but with good perf. gains. Any suggestions?

 

Your options are endless. What other mods do you have? Is the car an automatic or manual? Is the car street driven or drag oriented? Are the heads ported? What rear gears and other supporting mods do you have?

Watch some videos on YouTube and read up on the various combos guys are putting together on ls1tech.com. That will give you an idea of both the sound and power levels that you are looking for.

 

Honestly... there is no point in fooling around when it comes to camshaft selection.
There are many, many factors that should go into camshaft selection (for performance reasons).

However... In regard to people interested in "our" cars and engines... the majority of people care more about the sound from a camshaft than the performance.

Call Comp Cams, and give them all the details of your vehicle and engine (if all you care about is sound... I would even tell them this).
Otherwise, for performance reasons... call Brian Tooley Racing.

 

@ShiftyCapone @vorteciroc Thank both of all yall for the replies i decided to go with the texas speed stage 4 f35 cam great sound and awesome performance gains. Not cheap but worth it.

 

Stage 4 cams suck for driving. Will make a ls1 a dog on the street with big loss of low and mid-range torque, especially part throttle. And it's pointless without upgraded lifters and valve train to turn high RPM.

Over camming an engine is fun for maybe a couple months and then you realize the car would be quicker and easier to drive with something smaller.

 

Ok, I'll take the bait. You WILL NOT like this cam in a relatively stock 5.3! My motor is a bored and stroked 408ci LS2 with PRC (Texas Speed) cnc'd LS3 heads, long tube headers, and 3.73:1 gears. The recommended cam from TS wasn't even close to the spec's of their stage 4 cam. Listen to everyone above that has taken the time to respond to your thread and give TS a call and tell them what you have and what it is you want to do and they will hook you up. Find a good used LS9 cam and it will out run that stage 4 cam on the street everyday. And you'll save some money to put towards more upgrades.

 

If everything else is stock in the motor a super small cam is the best. It will add power throughout the whole curve without the eye wattering chugging cam you have selected. Something under 220 duration with 0 to negative overlap is what you should be targeting.

 

Thanks everyone for the replies. I called Brian tooley racing and gave them all my engine specs and they recommended a stage 3 truck cam. I got it and its getting installed in my driveway as i type this. I did a some research and im pretty happy with the results they got. Thank you all again for the suggestions.

 

What are you doing as far as tuning for the new cam? Once you get it installed, post up a video before, and after you tune it, so us LS swappers can get an idea of what this cam sounds like. If you can get some dyno numbers, that'd be awesome as well, to see how much power you picked up with the swap as well. I'm planning to do the same one of these years once I have the funds to do so, although just a stock 99 LS1 swap has been fun enough for now.

 

You chose a good cam. Should perform nicely without sacrificing driveability. How'd you get it so fast?

I'm glad you found a cam that fits your needs. I had a similar experience. I emailed a few retailers and got generic responses. Texas Speed was the only one that acknowledged my goals and gave me a suggested cam. I wanted good drivability, a little more power, and the ability to boost later. Although, the boost is probably not in the cards for me as it's been 5 years since I started down the lsx road. I guess I shouldn't say never.. With these cars, one thing leads to another, and so on, and so forth, and what have you...
