LS Swap: Starter doesn't turn over
LS Swap: Starter doesn't turn over
Hi guys:
I have competed dropping my 5.3 vortec engine in to my 1992 Camaro. My problem is I am not getting any power to the purple wire which goes to starter solenoid. I did my LS wiring harness as stand alone system. When I turn the ignition I hear the fuel pump primes but nothing happens with the starter This is my first 3rd gen. The wiring on this car was messed with before. It was an automatic car which was converted to manual. I don't see aby neutral safety switch on the clutch pedal and I have not been able to find a simple wiring diagram for 1992 which shows if there is any other safety circuitry or antitheft system on this cars. It would be very helpful if somebody can explain the starter wiring pathways from ignition switch to fuse block and to the starter. I appreciate the help.

google austin's 3rd gen. He has every diagram you need. Your neutral safety switch will either be right at the pedal (old style) and or tucked way up at the top of the clutch pedal and is a black switch. Do you have vats?

His car used to be automatic so I would check center console and see how or if it was bypassed properly.
Re: LS Swap: Starter doesn't turn over
Okay, I figured it out. It does (or did) have VATs, but after a lot of search I found out the PO has already bypassed that with something which could be a resistor. It is heat shrank and I didn't want to mess with that. I bought this car car without engine and the one key which came with it was hardware store type redo! Anyways, my problem was the starter solenoid. I didn't know in third gen there is a solenoid for the starter and also I didn't know the solenoid is in the kick panel. I bypassed that and then I taped closed the neutral safety switch which looks very odd and I don't know how that can be connected to the clutch pedal, and the hurray!!! engine came to life. 5.3 vortec is breathing in the engine bay. Nice sound!
I ordered a starter relay and then I have to clean up all the wiring but now, how can I find out what is the resistant rating is for this ignition key system since I don't have the original key? If I just put an ohm meter on the to end of the wires and turn the ignition with my none stock key, does that show the right resistor rating?
Thanks for all the input.
