Starters and Heat
What are y'all doing to protect your starter from excessive heat?? I'm running an iron LQ4 block with a Hooker turbo manifold setup. Everything has been mint up until the last little while where every now and then when I try to start the car it will just click. If I keep trying it'll eventually start but that's annoying.
I've triple checked power at the starter and it's all good. When it clicks and I hit it with a rubber hammer it starts and starts fast. I haven't checked for any corrosion on the connections but will do so tomorrow

Re: Starters and Heat
0 gage power and ground cables, remote solenoid, and a DEI starter blanket.

Re: Starters and Heat
I don’t have any data to prove or dispute whether the blanket made any difference, but with the header tubes so close to the starter I felt it was necessary. The battery is mounted in the trunk of the car and the starter solenoid is mounted in the right hand well with the fuel pump relay. The 0 gage cable is strictly for starting the car, there is a 4 gage wire to the alternator that distributes power to the rest of the car. The 0 gage ground cable runs from the battery to four bonding locations along the length of the car. Rear frame rail, chassis behind the door, fire wall, front frame rail, then to the engine block. The entire chassis is a ground cage. All of this successfully isolated the heat from the engine bay.

Re: Starters and Heat
I just use the factory snap-on solenoid heat shield.
The starters on LS engines are actually pretty good, and don't draw nearly as much current as the big, ugly, heavy SBC starters. Those would really benefit from a heat shield.
