How much should I spend on this?

Found this on craigslist and I am wondering how much I should offer for it.
http://omaha.craigslist.org/cto/2142288462.html
I will fill in some of the blanks for you guys, here is a message he sent about the car:
all I can tell you are the issues with the car, needs new head gaskets. battery, tuneup, oil change. Car has some rust and the drivers door has been replaced, it needs news bushings for the door hinges. The car has not been driven in 4 years and I need to have it sold before the end of the month. I think the engine size is 3.1 and as far as I know its the original transmission.
By original transmission he means it is an automatic.

Also it is obviously an 82 not a 28 Camaro.

Wanted to buy as a winter project and my Camaro is just fine.

Re: How much should I spend on this?

Id wait and find a nicer once that runs. I got my 85 IROC with a 5 speed 5.0 HO for 2500 with great interior, ok paint and no rust....

If your set on this one I wouldnt give more than 3-400 bucks, and thats if its completely rust free

Goodluck man

Re: How much should I spend on this?

id offer 350-400 that way if u fix it and the motor spins a bearing you can part it out some, and send the rest to the crusher, or if you wanna keep it and it spins a bearing you got it cheap enough you can buy a 3400 to put into it

That's what I have my 87 Iroc for that I picked up for $2300 with the 5.7 and t-tops. It has a pretty nice interior (needs shampooed), ok paint, and no rust, and it runs great (it will run better when I put new spark plugs and an O2 sensor in it though!).

Just thought it would be fun to work on and if need be part it out (if everything goes bad) and pick up a V8 camaro!

Sweet, yeah go for it man. I think you should try to pick up an IROC in the same condition/price so once you put all the work, time, and money into it itll hopefully be worth something but thats just me

Yeah when I get a garage and this one up and running (if I get it, I more than likely will if my friend does his half of the deal) I will begin restoring my Iroc. Also waiting until I get a job so that I can start on the exterior and work on the interior than the engine and tranny (it is still good but will keep money aside if anything happens). Will start buy rust proofing then dent removal then some paint. Then the little bit of interior reconditioning.

Yeah I will try and make the one I buy my dd and just make it so it runs. IT WILL GET NO SPECIAL TREATMENT!!! Ok maybe a little, I wont be off-roading in it or anything like that.

Like I said if it goes to crap I will part it and try and get my money back. I'm thinking I could probably get 1k in parts off of it atleast. Also the dash pad looks really nice.

Hope nothing to serious happens to my friend because I was messaging him on facebook and during that he got in a fight with his dad and beat his face until he started bleeding so I might be going solo on paying for this thing. That is unless the cops dont take him away.

Re: How much should I spend on this?

I would definitely be looking for a 350. Don't get me wrong, I love my car and its a 305. If I had to do it over again I would have picked a 350.

No 350 but it does have a highly desireable V6 in it. I already have a 350 so if I get this thing running it could be a DD.

I was actually just looking at that one! I would get that one but I dont have that much money right now. I am planning on seeing the camaro today (waiting for guys response). If I can get this one and do a fast part out I might go look at that 89 Camaro and be like here is $600.

I'm sort of hoping he is correct on the whole fact of there being a 3.1 under the hood because I dont think they started making them until 88? But I got my fingers crossed!

Re: How much should I spend on this?

1990 for the 3.1. he could have transplanted it... I'm interested in if it's a carbed 3.1 never seen one of those in a third gen

I seriously doubt he converted a 82 to a MPFI 3.1, that's nuts on about every level there is

I have the same feeling that he didnt because he was like "I think it has a 3.1 under the hood". If I see it I will make sure to pop the hood open.

Thanks man! I think that yours might be in better condition but not for long! I am pretty confident in my abilties to fix it. Most of the things that need fixing are pretty simple stuff like oil changes and batteries and tune ups. For replacing the head gaskets I will have to pull out my chilton manual. If it turns out there is more stuff wrong with it than I can fix I will part it or sell it as a whole and look for a running V8 project. Like this one that Jharrison5 reccomended.

No offense but my little brother (who is also 13) finds it kind of odd how you already have a car.

Re: How much should I spend on this?

The guy witrh the V6 Camaro says he will take $350 no less. It is a pretty good deal because this summer he started at $1000 then he went to $500 and I brought him down to $350.

Re: How much should I spend on this?

There are some good deals out there. $350 it the tops I'd pay for it. I only paid $300 for my rust free '91Z. Of course it has no engine or tranny, but it's an example of what you can find in that price range. There's pics of it in my sig. Show up with $300 cash and see what he says. If it werent a base camaro, I could see more value in it.

Thing is this is the cheapest one that has come on in 5 months. All the rollers in my area run from $500 (super rusty) to $1500. I'm not afraid of a little body work but I am afraid of doing a ton of engine and tranny work. I dont want to buy a roller because I am not to good at electrical and I dont have any of the equipment necessary for an engine swap so this is what I can do at the moment. If there is any rust I am going to take a metals class next semester (already took it once) and see if they will let me just work on my car the whole time. I still have the hammer I made from last time so I will give him that and I will pull in front of the shop and start working.

Re: How much should I spend on this?

Go and see if interior is ok, and spend $350 on the car (try $300 first).
Part it out and sell parts seperately.
Doors can get you $50 if they are free of damage, same as fenders.
That´d make $150. Hood looks to be ok as well.
Interior easily $200 if in good shape.
The rest (lights, engine, transmission) would make you a small profit.

and if you like, I can show you a pic or two of me standing next to my IROC, there old but yah...
also btw I turned 14 in september so yah

Whoops my bad! I thought you got it when you were like 12 or 13? Never thought that your car would have that many issues when it has like what 24,000 miles or something like that on it? My car is mechanically sound but it needs plugs replaced along with O2 sensor to make it run right and stop running rich. Mine has door dings (kids in the high school parking lot) and paint chips from the previous owner living on a country road for well over 15 years. Want to bring something up to you. When you go to high school (maybe you are already in high school???)park your car as far away from all the other kids! It will save your paint and your body. Once mine is repainted and I get the dents popped out I will park in the sophomore lot (what it used to be called) where only about 10 other people park and park in the top row as far away from other cars as possible. The parking lot is on the other side of the football field which makes for a long walk but it couldnt kill me to be a little healthier!

Re: How much should I spend on this?

Quick Update: we are for now deciding that we are not going to purchase this V6 Camaro unless we use it for parts. This brings me to my next point we have found a car which we are going to hopefully check out this weekend (not running so we are going to look at body car needs dstributer and carb to maybe run). Some future plans for car if we buy it are we are going to yank out the 305 and swap in a 350 (possibly one from a fourth gen) and then we will stroke it out to a 383. We are going to possibly yank out the interior and then weld in a roll cage and put in some a new interior with carpet (not new but a camaro at u-pull-it has a like new interior). We are alos planning on running headers with true duals to the back and getting a 5-speed or 6-speed manual transmission for it. If we buy the car I will put up a thread on here soon. Thanks Jharrison5 for showing me that Camaro as it is the one we will go look at.
http://lincoln.craigslist.org/pts/2163541070.html
Take a guess on how much we are going to pay if we buy it.

Re: How much should I spend on this?

its actually 127k miles..... haha I did think it was only 27k miles when I first signed up here, but I had a gentlemen from hear run an carfax on it and sure enough, it said it had wayyy more the 27k miles lmao. And btw when I signed up here I think I was 12, was just about to turn 13 if I remember correctly.

Im in junior high right now (8th grade) aint to long tell highschool starts though and thx and most defintly, Iv already got an few spots planned out where I can park at, and my plan is to either park next to an curb with an buddie parking on the other side of me, or if I cant get an curb spot, or nothing thats safe looking, get two friends to park on the sides of me. And I know that you can buy reserved parking spots, but those might only be for junior and seniors and if I can buy an spot agaist the curb, i'll probaly also buy an spot for a friend to park on the side(s) of me, LMAO I have crazy ideas to say the least... and of course I got another 2yrs tell I get my liscence so yah

Im just hoping I can find an decent parking spot when I have home games for football (decided too do football next year) with how crowded the highschool gets when there's games, it rediculous. Also im sure you already know but if your going to park way out there, most defintly get an alarm system for your camaro, lots of these teens are jelouse and have to try to ruin others nice stuff, im going try to invest in one of those mega fancy viper alarm + remote start systems, but alarms dont kick those kids azz's, thats why im starting to bulk up LMAO. Btw, how old are you?

I'm 16 and a junior. I will definatly invest in one of those alarm systems right before I start prepping it to have the dents removed and having it get painted. I'm not going to paint it but I will start researching on "quality" shops for painting it (I think my neighbor knows a guy that could do it cheap and does good work). I just want to get it painted before this summer so I can start driving up to lifting in a "fresh" camaro (at our school you have to go to weight lifting a certain number of times to play) the practices can be fun and it's always nice to pop the t-tops off afterwards (as hard as it is after lifting weights for a good hour or 2!). I dont have reserved parking at my school which is why I have to park way out there but since the lot is adjacent to the districts administration building I shouldnt have too many problems. But then again all the stoners hang out on the sidewalk between the school and the lot so I am not sure. I will make sure I keep my hammer I made in school in my car if I see them sitting on it or something! Might just keep it there too if anyone door pops me! You wont like me when I'm angry! But being a defensive lineman people dont mess with me at my school. When I start on varsity as a senior next year the school and the other 7,000 fans in the stands wont even think about messing with my car! I would do your parking idea but none of my friends have the same love for their cars except for my friend who got a $10,000 Grand Prix from his parents that are a janitor and a teacher, how they bought that I have no clue?

Re: How much should I spend on this?

yah man, the paint on your ride looks pretty decent shape, and thats for the most part is how mine is, it just needs a few little things fixed (headlights, repaint bumper covers, new decals, refinish wheels, new hood, etc) and it would defintly look much more like new, and btw theres great deals (obviously) around christmas time for alarm systems at best buy, they had one of the higher end alarm+remote start systems for a little more then $200, but who knows how much installation would be :P

Thankefully the highschool has an awesome gym so thats good, but thats something I havent heard about how you have to lift that number of time and how often, btw this might come out strange, but how much do you bench you know, what about others? Im just trying to get an idea for what size of kids I should be expecting at the school...

And nice I think im going probaly be somewhere on the line when I do Fball, not too sure yet though, thats messed up about the 10k pontiac haha.

Re: How much should I spend on this?

Your being to nice. My trunk and roof are pretty bad and my hood is starting to follow the example of the trunk (recntly got a big chunk of clearcoat taken off that is about a foot long!). Would have liked to have learned about the alarms a little closer to Christmas but I guess I could use it as a birthday christmas in April. I dont bench much but I have taken out guys that can do way more than me. For instance my max is only 175 lbs but there are some guys who can do 315+. I was one on one with one of those guys during a practice scrimage and I knocked him back and got past him. So I dont have imense amounts of strength but on the field I turn super human somehow whatever it works for me! Yeah it is about how you use it and your determination. I will give you another story. When I was 13 I played as a d lineman for a local football team. I was a bout 5'8" and 165 pounds(Now I am about 5'11" and 225 lbs. One game I was double teamed by two guys each of them were about 6'+ and around 250 lbs each! In that game I had about 6 tackles and a neck injury

Be careful in football especially on the line. Just this last year I was playing in practice and it was raining really I hard. We were doing a drill and I had slipped and the other guy landed on top of me hard. My back was in so much pain the next few days I started seeing the athletic trainers and told me to see the doctors. I sprained the ligaments in my back and sat out for 3 weeks because it was hurting. It didnt start feeling better until about a month ago. So after 3 weeks of being out I had to quit because I knew I wasnt getting better and decided to try and get a job. Over my years of being a lineman (offense and defense, I am now defense only) I have rolled my ankle (some kid landed on it and twisted it have pain in both ankles now), hurt my neck (still hurts), hurt my back (still hurts), and my knees aint doing too good either. So keep your eyes open and try to protect those areas of your body as they are the parts of your body that get abused most as a lineman.

About the Pontiac we came up with the theory that he was adopted and his real parents were spys that kept giving his adopting parents money so they can get him nice stuff. I have reminded him though that his car doesnt have anything on my IROC!

Anyway I am in the process of possibly getting some wheels from this guy so I can haul the car home. He wanted $200 so I offered him $150 and I am just waiting on his response. Anyone want to guess on how much I offered him and he agreed on?

Don't do that. Nothing would **** me off more as a seller if I give you my dead serious bottom line and some lowball dirtbag comes with less money. I'd tell them to take a walk in no uncertain terms for having wasted both our time.

Well that was a little harsh. Offering someone $50 less than their "rock bottom" price is hardly lowballing. If I said, take $200 and see what he says, now that would be stupid and a waste of time.

I am not going to do either of those. But the guy with the 305 Camaro that wanted $800 with three of the torque wheels. I offered him $400 and he siad the wheels were worth $180 a piece so I said $400 without the wheels and he has agreed! Now working on getting a set of stock ( think they are Z-28s) with decent tires for $150. The car has no carb or distributer or carb so we are going to see if we might be able to pull those off of my friend RS (the one I am going to do the project with). He sort of gave up on it because of the fact that the floor boards are really ruty along with most of the body. We were thinking about swapping the motor from that into it but I dont think a car that runs off of (I think it is 100) proof gas is very practical. We might tear down the engine or see if we can run it off of atleast 91 gas or something like that. How do you lower the rating of the kind of gas you need to put in it or is it safe to just put 91 in it as it sits?

Re: How much should I spend on this?

It sounds like the engine needs lower compression pistons and maybe heads. I think you'll want to be under 10:1 compression (guessing) if you want to run on med. grade gas. Sounds like you got a good deal. Congrats!

Re: How much should I spend on this?

I havent bought the camaro yet might not do so until the end of the weekend or sometime next week. I guess I coul try doing that but my friend recenly found this it is a 350 with a 400 stall. He thinks that makes it a 383. Is he right?

The stall in a transmission (400) has nothing to do with engine displacement. He may have been referring the the crankshaft in the 350 being out of a 400 small block. Creating 383ci of displacement.

Thats what we plan to do. But if you just changed the crankshaft how much horsepower could I be looking at?
