What year range was the cherokee that you got the shaft from and was it the cherokee or grand cherokee so that i get the correct one.

I actually got mine from a Grand Cherokee but those apparently are a bit and miss as to whether they will fit or not. I thinks they have a couple different steering boxes. Your safest bet would be to source one from an 84-96 Cherokee.

I can snap a few in a few days for you. It's a custom sealed box, not just a cover. I don't Know the dimensions or volume offhand though.

 

So I havent posted any updates in awhile, and that is due to the fact that I got in an accident on the highway about 3 weeks ago. Long story short: I got cut off by someone doing nearly half the speed limit, I swerved, spun out out and ended up putting the right front corner into a concrete wall. I just finally finished redoing the front suspension today and have driven a few miles. I'm still trying to source a good right front fender and front bumper cover though.

 

Damn man that sucks !!

 

The damage was:
-RF fender tweaked
-bumper cover scratched up and had a hole in it
-front lip is scratched up
-spindle snapped in half
-strut bent
-brake caliper mounting ear broke off
-A-arm bent
-strut mount got extremely bent up
-outer tie rod end bent
-sway bar end link bent
-brake line got slashed
-wheel cracked and bent
-tire blew out

Luckily I have a '85 Z28 as a parts car so I swapped over both A-arms, spindles, brake calipers, rotors, brake lines, tie rod and end link. I already had my new extended ball joints so I installed those. I also threw on my new strut mounts, and I also still have my SS wheels so I am using those now too. The only part I had to order was a new Koni strut.

I still need to do an alignment and find a new fender and bumper cover and have them painted. Then I can roll my fenders, clearance the inner fender support and set my ride height down to where I want it to be.

Did you ever find out what was causing the popping? My car has started doing this on takeoff and braking, and sounds like something explodes if I'm turning and braking hard. Sorry to hear about your accident too, let me know if I can help you out!

 

Just saw this thread. You got an excellent deal on a very solid car. Basically the car/options I wanted to find but couldn't. Congratulations!.

How are those turn signals in the bumper holding up? I want to get some but I'm a little worried the lenses might yellow fast.

My car did that for a while until I replaced the ball joints and a-arm bushings. I would imagine it's one of those. Interesting thing is that it has started doing it again occasionally... Perhaps unrelated, but I bought nice ball joints and poly a-arm bushings, they woldnt wear out this quickly, so Im wondering if it's just something innocuous in this case. Before Im pretty sure it was worn out a-arm bushings.

Yes, my right front wheel was bent from the impact. I'm just going to run these SS wheels for the time being. I never really liked the look of staggered diameter wheels, so I plan on buying a pair of 18x9.5 Y2K wheels to put up front. Although lately I have been considering getting some of the deep dish Y2K wheels and putting those in the rear. I just don't know if they would look OK with the standard wheels up front.

Yes, it actually turned out to be my brake pad. The spring was weak enough to allow some slight movement. I just removed the pads, slightly bent in the "ears" on the pad in order for them to have a nice tight fit and reinstalled them. No more popping.

Thank! I spent about 5 years looking for this car with all the exact options too, so I know how that feels. But the turn signals are holding up great. No fading, oxidation, pitting or anything like that. I don't regret getting them one bit.

Those SS wheels look so much better on 3rd gens than 4th gens. Guess it helps when the car is better looking to begin with. But I just wanted to mention, since you want to go back to Y2k's so I figure you're at least somewhat dissatisfied with the SS wheels. Those SS wheels look REALLY good in competition gray. If you like chrome wheels it wont really tickle your fancy bone, but it might be a nice placeholder for a while. I think the competition gray looks a lot better than that "fake aluminum" plastic looking paint that GM loves to use on their wheels.






Im personally hoping I can happen onto a set of those and paint em that color.

And you're right on another point, those do look a lot better in competition gray. That gives me something to think about. I do like the SS wheels to an extent, but they're a little a little small, IMO. I plan to get some drop spindles in the near future and 17's wont work with them. On top of that i autocross my car. I run my car in STU and the max tire width for that class is 285, which bulges quite a bit on a 9" wide wheel. Id rather run that size on an 11" wide wheel.

Believe it or not, 99% of the time I hate chrome wheels. I actually didn't really like my Y2K wheels at first, but they really grew on me. And if my car where any other color than black I still probably wouldn't like them. Though, I don't plan to run Y2K wheels forever. It's just easier and cheaper right now to get one pair of 18's to match so I can run those again. This car still has a long way to go. I'm saving up to get some REALLY nice wheels in the future. It'll be some 5 spoke 3 piece 18" or 19" really wide wheels, and the car will be just a hair lower. I need the perfect stance. I'm still trying to lock down my final decision but more than likely it'll be a set of Work Meister S1's or SSR Professor SP1's.

 

I guess I forgot to make another update. I finally finished my stereo install. I got a killer deal on all of my parts. I spent a total of under $200 for everything but if I bought new, I would have spent over $1200

For the most part I'm pretty happy with this set up. Although the speakers are hardly any better than stock. Though, I'm sure they are much more durable. They just don't provide bass or mid level tones. The subs are great, but with how loud and deep my exhaust is, I should have gone with 12's or 15's. But when I'm listening to the stereo with the engine off the subs perform fantastic.

 

Here's an update, I haven't done much. I raised my ride height about 1.5" for the time being until I fix the fender and get some drop spindles for the front. Having extended ball joint reduced my strut travel enough to the point that they could bottom out at my lowered ride height. I also plastidipped my wheels. I now like the way the SS wheels look on my car 100x more.

 

Dang, that looks 10x better with them in black, and I usually don't like black on black cars. Clean *** Z28!

What size tires are you running? Did you do them with the tires off or on?

 

I'm Running 275/40/17 up front and 285/40/17 on the rear. I sprayed the wheels with the tires on actually, I didn't even tape anything off. The plastidip was able to peel right off of the tires without a problem.

Ok cool, I got some BMW rims I wanna plastidip those rims before I mount them.

 

I actually think its probably a better idea to Plastidip the wheels with tires mounted. I had my front tires flipped at my tire shop after i had dipped them and they scuffed the lips in a couple places. The stuff is durable, but not that durable.

No. The steering wheel sits in the same position. It's just an illusion because the MOMO wheel is a lot thinner than the stock one.

Your car sounds awesome!! Does it drone much?

 

Yes, it does. Though exhaust drone has never bothered me in any car, I actually like it. It's most noticable around 2000-2400 rpms depending on how warm the engine is. However, when I had stock manifolds, cats, and y-pipe, the SLP Loudmouth 2 cat back did not drone.

 

Definitely one of my favorite cars on the board. Keep up the good work man. Hopefully I can get my hands on a 91-92 soon.
