Got my first car back...
Well, almost.
I bought a 1991 Black z28 when I was 21. It was a 305 T-Top Automatic, and I drove it all over the country as a young Marine. When I got off active duty I installed a megashifter, Grant Steering wheel and Blackout headlights and tail lights.
Then I got a wild hair one day and traded it for a 1990 Vette, but I never really bonded with it.
So a few weeks ago, I'm sniffin around on the internet and I find a 1991 Black Z28 5.7 hard top that sat in a garage for 20 years. Only has 15,000 original miles on it! I bought it for 11K and I fly down to LA tomorrow to pick it up.
I'm really excited.
I have plans for this car.

I was totallly expecting for you to have some story how you sold the car 15 years ago and got the same exact car back. This 15k mile car is still cool. but the other story would have been better!

As much as I enjoyed having T-tops, I would not have wanted that particular car back...lol
Here's a few of my old car the day I sold it

Re: Got my first car back...
I just put a new Ipod friendly head unit in that matches the color of the gauges, got it detailed and filled in all the scratches with touch up paint. Fixed the cruise control by putting in a 20amp fuse instead of a ten (The viper alarm was drawing the amps and popping the fuse)
Got a whole list of things I wanna do, but I'm pulling 18 hour days in training for the next 6 weeks during the week and I got a s**tload of homework on the weekends, so the Grant steering wheel and the B&M Megashifter will have to wait.
I'm also looking at having the back hatch Tinted Blackout, maybe ordering a louver and having it painted. I also have to have the rear drums converted to disk brakes and the suspension stiffened up. Damn thing rides too much like a Cadillac for my taste.

Here's an update on the interior;

I also found a pistol grip for the E-brake and smoked headlight covers that look pretty cool, but they're illegal so I'm thinking about buying some acrylic sheet today and fabricating a clear set.

I haven't done a whole lot lately, I just keep it garaged. I have been working my a** off for the last ten months cause I just started a new career, but when the money starts rollin in there will be things done.
I did put a 1,000 watt 5 channel amp and a pair of ten inch subs in, and upgraded all the speakers.

I found me some tinted lexan sheet and went nuts with the jig saw and dremel today. Much better than than the clear headlight covers.

I also ordered a bunch of gauge cluster stuff, (Overlays/LEDs) a three gauge pillar pod and some smoked tail lights. I'm eyeballin the the AUtometer elite series in red.
My local PD don't have time for stuff like this due to layoffs, so I'll just do what I want...

Re: Got my first car back...
The problem is that I walk back and forth between my car and the workbench over a hundred times just to get the perfect fitment, and if your bumper is so much of a 1/16th of an inch off, then they'll be too small and you'll either have cracks in the sides or they'll be too big and they won'f fit in at all. Probably easier if I gave you instructions. (Unless you wanna drive over from Hawaii)
I used a sheet of 1/8th inch tinted lexan to make them but I used a sheet of 1/16th clear lexan to get the right pattern first. The thinner it is the easier it is to work with. Don't try to make a pattern with anything too flexible, or the tinted ones you shape later won't fit right.
I held the clear sheet over the headlight and traced the pattern with at least 1/8th inch more clearance all around so I didn't cut too close and screw it up before I started shaping. After I cut them out with a jig saw (Laminate attachment) I gradually groomed down the edges with a dremel (Round sanding wheel) until it fit like a glove.
I used small brackets I picked up from Lowe's to mount them, but I didn't want them to reflect in silver when I turned on the headlights. So after I bent them just right to mount the lexan, I wrapped them in black electrical tape and slid black U-clips onto the brackets. I used large black interior screws to fasten the lexan covers to the brackets, (Makes it a snap to take them on and off when I wash the car) and good double sided tape to anchor the brackets to the bumper. (I'm damaging the bumper by using screws to mount them to the bumper, but there's no need to cause nastier damage by not putting a cushion between the bracket and the paint) That's enough if you don't drive on the highway, but if you intend to drive fast enough to hit the highway you'll have to screw the brackets into the headlight housing to properly secure them. (I've since been over 100 MPH with no problem)
Note: You have to install brackets at the top AND the bottom of the headlight housing. If you only mount them at the bottom, the cover will flap at high speed and scratch the paint off the edges of the headlight housing. If you only mount a set up top, they will catch air and fly straight up, ripping the mounting screws out of the headlight housing and then it's bondo time. (It happened to me at about 45 MPH and I was PI**ED for being so stupid)
Once I was satisfied with how it all fit together, I repeated the shaping process with the tinted lexan, but it was easier the second time around because I just traced the first set of clear ones onto the tinted sheet. Still had to do a little bit of shaping around the edges with the dremel, but not much. Don't peel the tinted sheet out of the protective sticky wrapping it comes with cause you'll scratch the hell out of it while you are cutting it out and shaping it.
Two warnings:
1) Don't try to use anything thicker than 1/8th inch thick. The first time I tried it with 1/4 inch thick clear lexan and wound up with nasty looking cracks all around the edges after I shaped it with the dremel. I lost four hours of my life and I'll never get it back.
2) The right side is a different shape than the left, just like mine will be a different shape than yours. So when you trace the clear ones you shaped to the thicker tinted sheet, make sure you mark it with a "R" or a "L" so you don''t mix them up and have to start over.

I had headlight covers back in the day on my first car and 83 camaro. the were smoked and hooked right in.. they were molded around the edges and so they filled the hole well and hooked into the headlight screws on top (looked like this execpt for third gen style (

I loved everything about the camaro EXCEPT how the headlights looked, this just solves my personal problem. T/A's are nice, but then you have to put up with all the knight rider jokes from your friends...lol (Every V8 I have owned was black, so I would be doomed)

I had that same set on my first 91, and I know what you mean. But now i'm using aftermarket halogen headlamps that are much brighter than stock and I don't have a problem with that anymore (They're brighter than my other cars)

Re: Got my first car back...
yeah I owned 2 TAs so far, my 86 TA ordered from factory and my current GTA. both black.. whenever someone sees a pic they are like oh its a knightrider car.. sigh.. I never think that when I see it as I see it as a GTA! i think the ground effects and different front end look much tougher looking than KITT
But I live in the California Bay Area where 99% of the folks out here are idiots who don't know or care about the difference and are only too happy to be ignorant. Arrogant pr*cks they are, assuming I can't afford a high end car when I just enjoy driving the cars that I loved when I was a teenager.
I stll get the "Where's your mul-let, wife beater, and gold chains" remarks though, and yes I still enjoy listening to Def Leppard...

Re: Got my first car back...
My next coupla projects;

Tinted turn/sidemarkers, nicer Fog lights, Changing the coloring of all the interior lettering from 90-92 yellow to 85-89 white to match the gauges. I also picked up a 3 gauge pillar pod and I'm looking at the Autometer ES series in red LED.
I bought all the new parts instead of changing mine so I could change it back whenever I want.
Gonna be a while before I get my smoked tail lights in from hawks, and when they come in I'm going to paint the amber color red.
