Re: Number five...
you can get a 5.3 for dirt cheap..... even the aluminum ones.
Re: Number five...
I'll definitely look at a carbureted 5.3, to run it like that, what else needs to be done along with the obvious (carb/manifold)? That would be a whole new thing for me, so stupid details would be nice lol. Also, without any blatant abuse to the trans, how should the t5 with a decent clutch/flywheel setup do behind an otherwise stock 5.3?
As far as he told me, it was originally a crossfire car, factory auto.

[quote=hairysox33;5153042]Picked up this 82 z28 today, been awhile since I've been on the board here, good to be back
.. anyways, it has no motor, bad interior, a clean body, and a flat tire.. BUT most importantly, it has zero rust. $500 delivered to my door and I finally have an autocross project!
My old 1991 z28's thread: https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/memb...-1991-z28.html
I sold this fourth gen after a body resto for a good profit to fund this venture.

what did you do to the nose of this fourthgen??

Re: Number five...
For real though, anybody know of anyone that successfully uses a 5.3/t5 as a setup?
Bear on mind, I know an aftermarket trans, or a t56 is a more suitable option. Neither are cheap. If I'm not mistaken non world class t5's aren't good or any real torque, and wc models are only good to like 300lbft. I will be driving accordingly to autocross, no third gear power shifting

Re: Number five...
You can mount a 5.3 to a T5. There are two different ways, the way I am looking into is using a 621 bellhousing with an LS1 cluch, pressure plate, and flywheel. Howe racing makes a throwout bearing that will work and you will need an LS7 pilot bearing. One small issue with this is you will no longer have the 17* canter to the transmission and you will need to figure out a shifter to fix that.
The other way, and I am not as familiar with this one, is using the stock bellhousing and clutch, etc. but you will be without one bolt on the bellhousing. Also I am not sure how to make up the difference in depth between the T5 and 5.3. This will also take care of your transmission tilt issue.
Of couse everyone is going to chime in and say you are not smart for using the T5 behind the 5.3, because the biggest issue with the T5 is the case. It is not that strong and it can/will blow out. You can beef up the internals to take the abuse no issues, but the case will not be able to. I plan on putting my T5 behind a pretty stock 5.3 and I will not be beating on it at all, so I have no doubt that it will hold up for me. Good luck on what ever you choose.

3.73's are nice...if you don't use them though then go ahead and throw them on craigslist....you can turn a good profit with those. Thread is lookin good!
Re: Number five...
I will probably just be getting reman parts store rear calipers, anyone have a suggestion for an AFFORDABLE upgrade? I'll likely just us stock calipers, stock rotors, and hawks pads.

Re: Number five...
Pretty cool, I really like that 4th gen you had.
I'm also on my 5th 3rd gen, and I got an early 3rd also (83) Can you post more pics of the front bumper on your 82? It looks, different for some reason.

Re: Number five...
I will, I suspect it to be the front bumper cover off of a 91/92, it came with that year side ground effects, I think its just missing the front lip is all.

Re: Number five...
well i have used my t-5 behind my 468 BBC with 590 to the wheels hasn't hurt it yet. but my stock 16's don't hook up either i don't see it being a problem behind a 5.3.

Re: Number five...
Oh ok, ya it just looks like a stock 82 z/28 bumper with no chin spoiler. I it were a '91 '92 it wouldn't have the sunken in blinkers in the front.
Re: Number five...
I think that should put the t5 arguement to rest... Ha, is it a stock t5?

Re: Number five...
Priced new rear calipers and rotors. Priced for an 85' z28..
Calipers are $60.95/ea (exchange) at orielleys
Rotors are $30.00/ea at napa
Any better options? Seems like for that money I could spend a small bit more and have something upgraded. Like, ls1 car brakes? I just feel like I have a start in this direction, and would rather not change the game up ha. Also, this style brake (one caliper on opposite sides of the housing) seems dumb. Just me?

Re: Number five...
It really depends on what you mean by a "small bit more". I have seen complete LS1 front brakes go for $150. You will have to get your rotor turned down into a hub, modify your spindles, and get brackets and bolts and you will have your LS1 brakes. I pieced mine together a few years ago and spent around $400 with modified spindles, hubs, bearings, etc. To me that was a steal and well worth it.

I'll likely stick to a stockish configuration, only with upgraded pads... Lame.

Re: Number five...
You are better off looking at the national boards and hoping someone is willing to send them to you. People are upgrading all of the time and just want their stuff gone.
I know a guy that is selling spindles and rotors from his '85 if you are interested in them. One potential issue is him shipping them. He is pretty busy and might not want to ship them and you would have to travel to the St. Paul to get them. Not sure where in Wisconsin you live.
What would you be willing to spend? I will keep my eyes open for you.

Re: Number five...
Looking at a totally o.e. clutch/flywheel setup as of now so I can actually finish the project and not have it drag on forever.
Flywheel:http://www.summitracing.com/parts/ZZZ-50-6525/
Clutch:http://www.summitracing.com/parts/ZZZ-MU56-1/
Trans Mount:http://www.summitracing.com/parts/PTP-7-1604/
Master/Slave setup:????
I'm also looking at this neat little upgrade to the T5 while its out of the car, on another forum a guy suggested this saying a road race crew he knows personally has been using this billet aluminum bearing retainer. Since they haven't lost a single transmission. So masybe its worth a shot at $45.00?...

It's the same as the rest of the LT1's, it's probably just the angle the picture is at making it more pronounced.

Re: Number five...
So, I got the engine on a stand now, gotta pull the pan and check the guts out... But, I'm probably changing plans a bit and using the t-350. I'd honestly rather go faster by investing more in the engine than go fast and break my trans and be s.o.l on a bunch of money. Lots of guys I've seen use Northern Auto Parts for rebuild kits with very good luck, thats a fact.
If the cylinders are any good, I can get away with this $137.00

Re: Number five...
Looks like you've got yourself a roller block. The tops of the lifter bores are even machined/clearanced for the dogbones. You can get that whole factory roller hardware kit for cheaper than retro roller lifters. Get the factory roller kit and an LT4 hotcam off ebay and you'll be way, way ahead.
Re: Number five...
Found the cam, what did you mean by the roller kit?

Definitely a pace car interior, but I'm curious if someone swapped it or if it's the real deal. Just curious -- does the trim tag on the radiator support show "26G 16L 16U" ?
