1990 IROC-Z Convertible

Well I did it again. Went and bought a 3rd gen Camaro. I have a 5th gen ZL1 and a 4th gen SS, and can't seem to stay away from the 3rd gens.

got the idea in my head that I was going to buy a cheap 91-92 Z to work on and sell. searched craigslist and every other site do says and weeks looking for something decent that wasn't priced by a crack smoker. came across this ad for a 1990 IROC Z convertible with a 5.7... bla bla bla... no details, no pics, sad listing. but emailed anyways. took a while but I got through to the seller and got pics, didn't get the best info but figured i'd make the trip and get it.

305 TPI, 700R4, 99k miles. bright red/ black and grey deluxe cloth interior. power mirrors, door locks and windows, power seat. cassette player, and the trunk pull down motor still works!! Has grey cloth seats from a 1998+ Camaro with power. these will be going away when find the stock seats for it.

Was told it had a fuel injector issue and one bad injector was causing the car to not run( one bad injector shuts down the entire side of injectors) he bought it not running and figured it out and unplugged the bad injector. started and then dies. runs like junk. he gave me 1 new injector to fix the problem

also it has no brake pedal at all, the brakes are locked up, also gave me new front calipers to be installed. but I don't have the wheel lock key... not the first time its happened to me.

I was thinking it was running driving when I went to get it, boy was I wrong.

Plans are to restore. paint and body, top, interior, engine, suspension, wheels and tires. selling was the ultimate goal, but I find it hard to buy stuff without upgrading. and if I start upgrading it wont be a stock resto and flip and ill want to keep it. keeping it stock might make it hold its value better being a rare breed. but im hoping I can find a way to hang onto it and enjoy it

Re: 1990 IROC-Z Convertible

things I want to do but don't know if I should.

Corvette wheels and tires 18" C5 replica 9.5" front 10.5" rear.
Lowering springs.
Swap to 1991-1992 ground effects and blisters
headers and full exhaust
remove all emissions stuff and do the free mods.
upgrade the stereo and speaker system.

I don't want to hurt the resale value, but it does have 99k miles, and its not a low mile mint garage queen. its been driven and will be driven more when its done, so why not enjoy it right?

so many ideas.

Also sitting on a blown 4th gen rear. Might put new gears in it and install so I don't need to run spacers in back, and convert to a disc rear brake

Re: 1990 IROC-Z Convertible

Well I was able to get the injectors all swapped out last night. new gaskets for the upper intake as well. now it will actually start and stay running but i'll have to shut it down because the rpms keep going up like I have my foot on the gas. the tach isn't working so I don't know how close to redline its getting. afraid to let it go more than a few seconds before shutting it down.

I picked up a set of used injectors from a 2001 bullet mustang. 19 lb.

Re: 1990 IROC-Z Convertible

Like I said before... Nice car. Get some more pics up over the weekend.

As far as mods go, its your car and you need to do what you want for you and your dream of it, but if you have plans of selling it for close to a profit or to ever try and get your money back out, it needs to be mod's that can be un-done. I would take the interior back to completely stock, and add a nice catback exhaust, maybe a pro-kit lowering spring, and a quality set of 17" or 18" wheels. Leave the rest a restored stock condition. The cars look good enough that it really won't need more to be a REAL eye catcher.

new coolant temp sensor in. I believe my IAC is toast or stuck as the ides skyrockets when the car starts. hopefully I can get that figured out tomorrow and move onto the next item, brakes!

Re: 1990 IROC-Z Convertible

Sweet ride man, I bought my '90 vert about 5 years ago with the same injector problem! It's come along way since then... Ill put some pics up, I feel the same way about customizing. I wanted to keep it semi stock but make it my own. So far I have

C6 Polished 18's and 19's
C5 sport seats with 4th gen rears
Painted it to the original IROC white
New black carpet front and back
Alpine/JL Audio sound system
Replaced all the rest of the car trim back to factory new/old stock

Still in process, probably forever lol, next move is I ordered a full set of front and rear brembo 14" brakes from a 2010 SS. Now just have to get them on!

Good luck dude, post some pics of your progress!!

Re: 1990 IROC-Z Convertible

Make sure you don't have some type of massive vacuum leak.
I saw a post by another member that showed where a plenum gasket had slipped during install and wasn't obvious when the plenum was being reinstalled. This caused a massive vacuum leak that would cause the car to run at high rpm.

Already found the issue 2 days ago. And its running like it should be. Tpi gasket was the problem.

Re: 1990 IROC-Z Convertible

Got the rear view mirror reglued. its got one or 2 speakers that work but sound like crap. might find some speakers and take the stereo out of my 97 SS. still haven't installed new spark plugs yet. Ive got some NGK TR55's that I never put in my last car.

I'm very tempted to order a full exhaust. the OBX longtubes and y-pipe is a cheap upgrade. just want to clean up under the hood a bit. its got 100k miles and has been driven, will prob continue to be as well. I don't think some mods will hurt the value of the car. still rare. need to get my hands on some K&N filters. ordering a new top soon, staying with the plastic window and canvas.

keeping my eyes open for some black seats and pass side mirror. A friend of mine is selling his 18.8.5"/19x10" deep dish C6 Z06 wheels in gunmetal. they need front tires replaced, and the rears don't have a whole lot of life left in them, but should last a while as I have 5 vehicles, they don't get driven much. hes asking 550 on the wheels.

ill post back with the pic of the wheels and a video of it today

Ive decided to keep the iroc look, no 91-92 parts, but im thinking of not putting the silver and black stripes along the bottom after paint.
