91 Z28 build.
91 Z28 build.
I'm currently in the process of tearing down and building my 91 z28. I got the car from a trade for a 94 blazer and am having a blast with it so far. I'm gonna post as many pics as possible. Kinda having trouble with up loading pics at the moment.

Found out I have 14102188 heads which from what I have read are terrible heads. So for this build I think I'm gonna opt out for some different heads. Any ideas. Keep in mind I'm on a super tight budget. Other wise I'd just go out and get me some real nice AFRs lol

Nice build!! I have a set of ported vortec heads work really nice and there dirty cheap. good luck with the build!

Also to my surprise this motor has been rebuild and bored .030 over. Well thank you lord you just saved me about 1200 bucks and made more displacement a real option. I'm thinking of going the 383 stroker route now. Got to do some more research on cranks. Anyone have any advice on a good crank and some 6 inch rods I should look into? This will be a nitrous motor. Looking to achieve about 480 n/a 600 sprayed. I wasn't going to touch the bottom end until something broke but since this has had recent machine work I'm thinking a crank and rod upgrade isn't out of the question.

Get a forged crank, H beam rods and forged pistons, if your gonna spray it.
Scat, Eagle, Cola, Lunati, etc.... lots of brands to choose, most of them are made overseas these days, you'll hear complants for just about any brand.
Those heads are truck heads, which is odd.

Yea I looked the heads up and have come to the conclusion someone had built the motor for a truck then decided to toss her in a z28. And thanks on the bottom end advice. My only question is I was talking with my brother whom is a master tech and has built serval performance motors including a real nice blown 350 that made roughly 700 hp. He said that from a money perspective I would be better running a cast crank for now because it has the ability to flex under extreme stress where a forged would not, it would just break due to its extra hardness.

700hp 350? what isn it?
I have a 454 with an 8/71 and its not much over 700hp.
If you plan on spraying any more than a 150 shot and want it to last, forged is the way to go, no question.

I think about 500hp is about where most draw the line. Now a aftermarket cast crank does offer some added strength but with a good name brand forged 4340 crank coming in at 650 bucks...... I don't know if your going to regret that purchase down the road. If your strapped for cash you could likely reuse the stock crank or buy a new cast crank for $200 but if it lets go that $650 you didn't want to spend could cost you a lot more with a new block, rotating assembly, etc.
If you go forged, after you get bored with the 150 shot you will have a little more room to grow

It was a 350 with a stock cast crank forged dish pistons blower cam and I can't remember what heads but it has a weiand blower sitting pretty on top. He built it when he was in high school which was in 90 and everyone told him he was crazy for running a stock cast crank but he ran the car a long time and never had an issue. And a 150 shot is about the max I'm gonna go. But forged rods and pistons sounds like a good plan. Money is a real issue. I'm literally gonna scrap pennies together to build this. I will probably save for forged pistons and forged h beam rods. I have a ton of more research to do and since I just found out that it has been bored .030 over I've been playing with the 383 idea. Currently my brother has a 385 making roughly 520hp n/a so he has been my go to guy.
P.S. That 350 he built was a nitrous motor for about a year before he built it as a blower motor.

Just my opinion, but if you are going to be digging into the change jar to build the motor up, I would enjoy it like it is until it pops. Focus on the other stuff to really get that motor to run on the bottle, intake, exhaust and ignition. That being said, in the mean time saving for the nitrous motor that you want to build, i.e. crank, rods and pistons. Johnny Blaze already named some of the good companies that make some great forged stuff, last thing that you want on any performance engine is cast or hypereutectic parts.

Yeah, a race car is not cheap, a n2o race car is hard to keep going on pennies.
I would really look long and hard at what your goals are and what your real budget is.
Otherwise you'll end up with a car in pieces that you may never get to enjoy.

Re: 91 Z28 build.
Hey there guys sorry for the absence. I took the winter off from the build. No heat in my side of the barn. But I'm almost done with the complete tear down. I no longer have tapatalk so I need to find another way to upload my photos. Any suggestions?

I just got my photobucket back working. No issues so far, once I deleted all of the old pictures on there from when I first got married.
