GT the lube I got was Castrol brand and it said that it was for limited slip differentialso, so I used it as is. I hope that's okay...

Re: My 84 Z28

Today I am changing the transmission fluid. Got it all drained and cleaned up. Fluid looked decent and didn't smell terrible. I saw lots of Dextron 6 fluid so I did some research on here to see if that's okay, and it appears to be acceptable so I'm off to wally world to pick up a jug.

It's hard to see, but there's a bare wire, it looks like a ground, on the passenger side right behind the headlights. Possibly something looks like it was bolted on there maybe? Saxondale you have any ideas?

Hmm. Not sure. Having a hard time identifying the photo location. I can check my car. Remind me if I forget. Focused on rust currently so quite preoccupied.

Re: My 84 Z28

Looking at my car it is a ground wire leading to one of the harnesses in front of the radiator support and behind the headlights. It's likely for either parking light or headlights on that side. There is a similar single wire on the drivers side of radiator too, mounted to ground screw in same location. On passenger side there is a paired wire (like speaker wire pair) leading to one harness, and a single black to another part of the light harness.

On the drivers side, the cruise control ground is also connected to that screw.

I have photos. Will upload and share here.

I think it would be safe to add a loop connector and hook it up to that ground screw. Check your light operation in front, parking and headlight, before and after connection. Don't forget to try the brights.

Re: My 84 Z28

I haven't been doing much on mine for a couple of days. I did drive it to work a couple days and it drove fine. the steering is still a little on the loose side, but i'm still working on that. I did receive my t top bag from HenryD3 and it is awesome. I also have a mirror trim panel for the drivers door on the way from another board moderator. today i'm building some stackable wood blocks out of 2x10's to get the car a couple of feet up off the ground. should make it easier to work under it.

I expect your car will clean up in those underhood areas as well as mine. It took many hours of cleaning to get to that state, and there are many many more hours of detailing remaining in those photos alone. Top of the radiator support now has a gloss, but was no easy task by hand. Photos definitely show more filth than is apparent in person.

But as you know, getting the basics of car function consumes these initial days and years. Had mine a year now and thought I'd be much farther along. But I can see this car will take years to finish. Stay the course.

Re: My 84 Z28

Well, tonight I had time to fix my drivers mirror control in the door. I got a replacement part from a member of the board, turned out to be a little different from the part that's on there, but it works and looks better. Then I took it out for a little 20 minute drive. It is a beautiful evening here since it's finally cooling off. Anywho....

No more hole where the mirror control is!

Re: My 84 Z28

Yesterday I changed the engine oil and filter, and then my wife, daughter, grandson and I all went downtown and cruised and saw lots of cool cars. Had a great time. I also ordered a new GM brake pedal pad! Super exciting! Not. But it needs it as the one on there's worn nearly in half. I am going to clean up the engine bay area as well. I noticed last night that on the underside of the hood under the dirt and grease is nice shiny red paint! Lol.
I need to get a new hood insulation ordered as well

Re: My 84 Z28

Spent a little bit of time under the hood today. My coolant overflow tank was filthy so I removed it and took it to the car wash and cleaned it up. Not perfect but much better. Cleaned the underside of the hood. At least a portion of it. Found a broken wire that goes to the light under the hood
I disassemble it and was going to try and solder it but it was not working. I guess I'll be looking for another.

Found a large ground wire not hooked to anything...Saxondale any ideas? That last wire i found that you helped me out on was a ground wire for my passenger side high beam headlight.

Re: My 84 Z28

Today I removed the passenger seat and cleaned up the carpet under it, and made $1.19 in the process! Lubed the rails so the seat slides back and forth better. The plastic parts around the rails were in decent shape with the exception of one, but I don't think that it even belongs there. So I think I need to look for another front piece. Took it out for a drive and discovered that the cruise control is working...I thought I broke it, but maybe it only works above a certain speed? Glad to see it functions regardless.

This is the broken one, but I don't think it is for the car anyways....

I need another one like this....

I need to find the piece that goes on the lever, it's missing.

Check southwest salvage on west and pawnee. They have some stuff to pick through although it is getting slim. I pulled a whole set of gray 91-92 seats that had no tears and in really good shape for 150 along with seat belts and most of the interior plastics. To bad I had already reupholstered my seats. Like mine better now though.

Re: My 84 Z28

Today in the mail I received my front brake pads and the hood insulation. But the best part was in was able to meet up with forum member Citation X and purchase a dash pad in very good condition for an extremely reasonable price! He has a real nice 92 RS that's really nice and clean!

Re: My 84 Z28

New and the old. Overall im fairly happy with it. Seems to be inside out to me. Being the fiberglass side is facing out and tje finished side is against the hood. I tried it the first time opposite but then the holes didn't line up. In the end, one hole was off and I had to poke the retainer through the material.....but its better than it was.

Thanks!

I think so, it's about 1/2 to 5/8" thick. And the retainers that came with it are pretty nice as well.

Re: My 84 Z28

The fasteners do match the factory size and appearance perfectly, minus the GM part number.

I contacted RePops when I initially received mine, and asked if they knew which side should be out. I said it was backwards from factory design.

He asked me to provide photos and the date on the box so they could pull all the upsidedown pads from inventory, and said he'd sent a replacement. I provided detailed photos and the manufacture date from the box.

They sent a replacedment pad, for a 70-81 Camaro. I emailed and left a voice message to let him know. He never returned my call or email, so I followed up a week later by phone to learn a pad was in the mail.

When it arrived it was an 82-83 CFI pad. I emailed again and left a voice message. RePops did not return my email or call, nor did they send another pad.

Based on your pad, it appears they are still selling upsidedown pads.

The CFI pad was also upsidedown, so maybe the fuzzy side is down for a reason. Does it protect the hood paint better? Does it create better air space within the pad? Is the fuzzy side down less likely to collect moisture between pad and hood? Are they being made incorrectly? It's not clear, but RePops never gave an explanation of what is correct.

There was a member here who was successful in getting one of the pad manufacturers to make his the right way (not upside down), but he had to request it. I'll have to hunt through my notes and see whoa that was. I hope it wasn't you, Saxondale.

No. Wasn't me. I'll eventually get mine installed upsidedown. First need to touch up a minor surface rust spot. Some day I'll order a correct one, even if good 'ol RePops. But must be correct.

Re: My 84 Z28

I guess us thirdgenners will have to show more love (spend more money) for the non-IROCs before we get correct repro parts. The IROCs will get first round of most accurate parts. Maybe other years will follow. Don't even know if the IROCs have have correct repro insulation at this point.

Re: My 84 Z28

It's been a while since any updates, the car sat in the garage all winter. Got the battery charged up and took it out for a drive. I finally got around to replacing all of my brake pads and also replaced both rear brake calipers. Still need to replace the whole ebrake cable. Took the car to meinike auto service for a brake fluid flush. Brakes are working great, but it just seems to me that the pedal travel is long. Maybe that's normal. I finally found what was causing the idle speed to be so high...there was a little lever or rod sticking on the passenger side of the carburetor. I sprayed it with some wd40 Teflon lube and it's been good now. Really enjoying driving it. Still lots of interior work to do. And get the rust spots fixed.
