The dream is realized: Finally got my 3rd Gen
Hello all! I’ve been a fan of 3rd gen Camaros for a long time, and was finally in the right place/time to pull the trigger on my (almost) dream car! I just bought this 1989 RS with t-tops and a T5/305TBI, with only 54K miles. I’d have preferred an Iroc or Z28, but this one was a good price and damn near flawless, so I figured it would be a great base to build on. Its already proven to be reliable and fun transportation, as it made a 1500 mile road trip with no issues at all.
My plan is to upgrade it over time into something that is decently fast and corners well, but also has good drivability and gas mileage (hilariously, it currently is able to pull off 32mpg on the highway with AC off), and is able to pass emissions. I don’t want anything loud or flashy, just good, simple fun. I’ve got a basic plan of the upgrades I want to make over time, but feel free to give me suggestions or additions to my list! My plans in chronological order:
0.Already installed new stereo and alarm
1.Chassis improvements for handling/rigidity: subframe connectors, strut tower brace, wonder bar, etc.
2.1LE or 4th gen LS rear end for disk brakes and posi-trac
3.Upgrade front brakes to approx. 12” rotors and better calipers
4.OEM 16” Iroc/Z28 whees, or these
5.The tried and true LS1/T56 swap, and all it entails.
Looking forward to participating in the forum.
