At lunch time today, I went over to the dealership's detail shop and grabbed their carpet extractor. I stayed at the body shop after work and shampooed the carpet and seats in the old girl. The seats cleaned up AWESOME. I'm super pumped. The seats are still pretty damp in the pics, so they look a little weird. Check out the carpet. The car sat in the same spot for 25 years, and you can see exactly where the floor mats were. The carpet must have looked damn near new when the car was parked. What a shame The seats don't have a trace of wear, no burns, etc. The carpet has one small burn mark, but otherwise in great shape, other than faded to all hell. I'm thinking about just pulling the seats out and dying the carpet.

Hi there,
Funny, I was thinking the same thing about the carpet - just re-dye the existing carpet. It doesn't look worn, and you will never get an aftermarket carpet to fit that good.
I wonder, would an upholstery steamer be able to straighten the piping on your seats? I have a similar problem with my new seat covers, and I am trying to figure out a way to tighten the skins up.
The front fender had dents where something fell against the car while it was sitting outside for 25 years. They needed to be pulled. The others were just tiny dings. The car is actually really straight given the age, and having 74k miles. Can't wait to get this one looking like a new car. It deserves it
Looking good! I've been off the boards for a few months due to general life craziness. My first stop is always the 'Members Camaros' section to see what you're bringing back from the dead. Love the drag car too.

There's a bunch of wrinkled up packaging plastic sticking out of a box next to it on the floor that's making that weird reflection on the right side lol. Got my new emblems on.

Lulz.
You're getting closer. Gonna be a cool post when the car is finished and you can show the side-by-side before/after pics.
Its hard to believe thats the same hood LOL. And believe it or not, all that surface rust cleaned up and it looked like a brand new bare metal hood. Took 80 grit sand paper and PHIX rust inhibitor chemical, but actually cleaned up very quickly
I've been painting the car in sections as time allows on weekends and after work. And I finally finished all of the painting tonight, other than the headlight buckets still need the semi gloss treatment. Other than that, it's FINALLY all one color!
Looking sharp! I'm curious about the semigloss headlight buckets; is that a factory thing for earlier years on black cars? I ask because my '89 has full gloss buckets and no evidence of the front being removed or repainted.

They were all semi gloss black. Although the semi gloss does get shinier over age due to cleaning, etc. I wasn't positive if they were like that on black cars or not, so I asked Chazman about his 11k mile 1989 that he bought new, and yep, they were indeed semi gloss black on black cars as well.
I actually painted the buckets last night. Unless you're right on top of it, it's not thaaaat noticable

Nice, I'd love some photos that show off the contrast of your buckets so I know what I'm missing .

I use PPG Hot Rod Black on the buckets when I do these cars. Only i double the catalyst and reducer to get more of a sheen. Hot Rod Black is pretty flat, otherwise.
I have pretty much everything done now. Carpet dyed, etc. Turned out great!
I took the car to show the lady I bought it from the night before last. Needless to say, she was super happy to see her old baby looking like new again!

Made a walk around video tonight.... I still need to install the new sun visors and under hood liner. And I want to find some nicer door panels. These are wrinkled at the bottoms
Care to share pointers on how you painted your car? Tips, dos and donts
I actually did a build thread a little over a year ago on my old 1989 IROC that got the same treatment as this car. There are a lot of tips in that thread that were also used on this car.
