Re: New here.

I love these threads! I can't wait to see it finished. I have one question and one idea I'd like to share

1. How much of a weight difference between the orioriginal gas tank and a plastic tank? I'm guessing it's not much but I'm curious.

My idea is to send pics of the completed car to the family of the girl that passed away.

Re: New here.

Blackgloves- I assume you are like me and on Camaro5 as well? I responded last night to what I presume was your post about your 5.7 for sale on my thread over there about this car. Sorry it took me a bit to get back I didn’t see your response right away.

so for the tank weight I can’t completely compare them accurately because the steel tank is still probably 1/4 full of nasty gas but the plastic tank is quite lite. It didn’t take much at all to get it into place and bolted up empty on my own with no lifting help?(jack, etc). It does hold about 4-5 gallons more than the steel tank from what Ive read. As for the idea about reaching out to the original owners family, that is a cool idea I hadn’t thought of. I have their P.O. Box on the title maybe I’ll write a letter and see what happens. That could be a really cool experience all the way around.

how about some more original parts pics… 100% factory OE belts… all three of ‘em.

Re: New here.

Yes, I post on Camaro 5, and LS1 tech. I once owned a 6th gen, and an 01' Z28

I haven't checked that post. But the 5.7L TPI and trans sold.. i would have loved to sold it to someone like you that is restoring an IROC. Unfortunately it sold around 3 weeks of being on the market. I have no idea what the new owners are using it for. My mechanic sold it for me

Re: New here.

More loose ends tied up tonight. Not really much in the way of pictures though. I got the hole drilled to mount the 4th Gen filler neck to the body, and the evap line from the 4th Gen tank adapted to the 3rd Gen evap hardline. I changed the pinion seal, cleaned and re-installed the torque arm (it looks factory fresh sporting its original paint) and drive shaft. I flushed the rear end out one more time and re-installed the cover with a new felpro gasket, and added oil.

I fired it up and ran thru the gears for the first time and it seems to be shifting without issue, but time will tell how it does with a load. I’ve had it running several times now, it’s still pretty rough at idle and lower rpms, but it does seem to get a little better the longer it runs. It does fire right up with ease so that’s good. I am getting a MAF burnoff code I need to look into more. I’ve had it hot enough to trigger the fans a few times and everything seems to be good. Surprisingly no leaks at all that I’ve noticed. I’m sure the injectors are in need of replacement and it’s on my list of stuff still to do. I’ve also got all the stuff to tune up the ignition rounded up. I wouldn’t be surprised if that does make a difference in how it runs. Tomorrow I plan to put the rear suspension completely back together one last time for a while and do the ignition tune up. Might try to pull it foreword and back a little and see how the transmission acts. I still need to round up a wheel and a set of tires for it before I can try and drive it. More updates to come tomorrow.

also can anyone tell me what this ground goes too? I need to repair it still but wondering if it’s related to MAF burnoff code. Since it’s in the vicinity of the burnoff relay I’m hoping maybe that’s the problem. I’ll probably repair it tomorrow if I have enough time.

I don't what that ground is for, but it sure needs to be near the top of your to-do list. It's seriously chewed up.

Re: New here.

Don’t worry it’s pretty high up there. I’m slowly working my way thru everything. It can’t be anything to major, I say that because everything works for the most part, Except for that burnoff code. My blower motor and rear hatch latch have both even started working recently. That leaves the door locks and power windows as the only big electrical things left.

i didn’t get as much time as I had hoped this afternoon but I did get the rear suspension assembled and the heat shields around the exhaust put back in. I’ll try and get to the ignition tune up next week sometime.

Another side note, I traded my 5th Gen in for another 2010 2SS/RS ABM with 2900 original miles a couple weeks ago.
new car on the right old car on the left. I’ve already got my hands on an NOS (hard to believe a lot of 5th Gen stuff has already been canned from GM) set of gloss black ground effects, a new GM dovetail spoiler, and a GM heritage grill along with 2000 mile take off 2021 ZL1 wheels and tires and a hurst shifter for the new car. Hope to start adding the mods to it sometime next month. It is 100% stock. Bought new in the town I live in and sold to me by a local used car dealer.

Re: New here.

I threw the cap, rotor, plugs, and wires at it today. Wow what an amazing difference. The car now idles smooth as can be, and revs to 5500 effortlessly. Since it had run a bit on the old ignition parts I was able to find that 3 cylinders weren’t firing well if at all. I went from R43’s to R45’s because the burn pattern on the old plugs was obviously too cold. It fired right up now and sounds great. I don’t plan to do injectors any more at this time. now that it’s running correctly there is no smoke from the exhaust and still now leaks I’ve found anywhere. Pretty cool to see this old thing taking shape so nicely. I don’t have a you tube account and i have no intentions of getting one or id post some videos up. All I’m really lacking is a wheel and 4 tires and I think it’ll be ready for a shakedown run. I can’t wait for that day to come.

Re: New here.

More updates from the long weekend. I had the seemingly common temp gauge stuck straight up on the tin. Took it apart this morning and massaged the tin so hopefully it won’t happen again. Now all the gauges work correctly. All I need now is to fix the power windows and the power locks and I believe all the electrical stuff will work. I’m sure the motors are gone in the windows and the actuators in the locks. Next priority is going to be tires and a wheel though.

You can see where I rolled the lip into the tin just behind the 260 mark.

Re: New here.

I got it all buttoned back up last night. It moved under its own power for the first time in 20 years. Pretty cool moment. I moved it over to another part of my property where I keep a couple more of my old trucks. It fits right in with my 69 and 72 K10 and K20.

the POSI 100% still works… had to try it out. Next step is a wheel and some tires.

Re: New here.

Quick update. The alternator locked up the rear bearing back in Oct. Today I ordered the rebuild kit for it so I can keep the original alternator (not that it really makes that much of a difference) in it. I also ordered a set of Riken Raptor ZR 245 tires and one refurbed rear Iroc wheel. I’m hoping to have it on the road by Christmas.

My original alternator was replaced with an ACDelco reman before I bought my car. Wish they had rebuilt the original.

Re: New here.

I can appreciate that. I couldn’t bring my self to defile the originality of this one. Even though it sat for all those years it was still charging correctly until that bearing let go. It was getting louder and louder the more I ran it so I wasn’t surprised when it let go. I was going to address it before taking it down the road for the first time, my hand was definitely forced lol.

Today I pulled the tires and wheels in preparation for new shoes on Monday. I’m hoping the new wheel doesn’t take forever to get here but I’ll get the other three on it so I can get it off the jack stands sooner. I don’t like having them in the air any longer than I have too. I ordered a complete set of brake hoses for it today. I’m going to flush the system really good before we hit the road the first time as well. Other than some mild rust on the rotors the brakes don’t look too bad. I’ll inspect the calipers a little more closely when I change the lines and flush everything.
Im getting pretty excited for the first real drive. I also put a quote in on my Hagerty policy. Only $22 a month for full coverage with $10K guaranteed payout. Not too bad.

Re: New here.

More updates. late last week I registered and insured the IROC.
Saturday, I tightened up the alternator belt a little, it was squealing some when cold. I changed all the rubber brake hoses, and completely flushed the brake system. I let each chamber of the master cylinder run completely dry so I could wipe all the crap out of them and start as fresh as possible. I gravity bled each wheel until I had only all the way around. I also changed the oil, it only had about 3 hours total on marvel/15w40 combo that was in it, but it came out pretty black. The lifters were a little sticky when I first fired it up, but they have only gotten quieter the more it’s run. I also topped off the oil/friction modifier in the rear end.
I finally got the new tires and rear wheel back under it, off the jack stands, and moved it around the house and turned around in front of my neighbors farm shop. I haven’t been down the road yet because my son was spending some time with his grandparents this weekend but I’m hoping our maiden voyage will be this week, while I’m off of work. He has to tag along with me when I go. I still need to flush the coolant real good and change all the belts but everything else seems to be good.
here’s a few photos. Check out that nasty brake fluid in the drain pan. There is nothing but brake fluid in there. That’s it. It still needs a lot more work to be what I want but being drivable is huge progress.
The master pic is with the front chamber cleaned out and refilled the rear drained. Like I said the brakes work great.
check out the hot oil pressure with the fresh 10/30 oil change

Very cool. Man that brake fluid was nasty. Good call getting that done.

Your son will love it. It's so unlike riding in anything modern.

Re: New here.

Yea that brake fluid was pretty bad. We took it for a drive yesterday, he was all smiles. Pretty cool to enjoy its first cruise in 20 years. It actually ran really nice. The suspension is still tight, the engine ran great, as good as I could have ever began to expect. The transmission works about as good as a 700R does. I did the normal lock it in 3rd at low speeds to keep the hunting gears away. OD does work and it shifts nice and smooth. All in all it was 100% a success. Still a lot that needs done but it’s on the road now. That’s the hardest part sometimes. Here’s another shot of the brake fluid from the lines. And of course the cruise.

Re: New here.

Junk will probably accumulate a couple more times in the brake reservoir as it cycles in and out of the master cylinder, at least mine did and my fluid was in similar condition. Nice work getting it on the road, my trans also hunts in OD before its fully warm. After I've been driving it around for a while and everything is nicely up to operating temp, it seems to be normal. I recommend frequent short trips to give the drivetrain gentle heat cycles, slowly driving it longer and eventually harder.

Re: New here.

Yea I’m sure you’re right about the fluid in the master, I was already getting a little bit of old fluid right after I flushed everything. I’ll probably drive it around a bit and then flush it again, and repeat until everything is clean. I agree on the short trips/heat cycles for now, that’s exactly my plan. Today I drove it about 8 miles, this time between 60-70 mph average. Again it ran smooth as silk and had plenty of power, and no issues. I’m really starting to like this car a lot. I think it’s going to be a good alternative to taking my 5th Gen out for those short stress relieving trips.

Re: New here.

Another quick update:
Sometime since the rear bearing in the alternator went out in early oct I developed a parasitic draw on the battery. I’ve only really noticed it since I put the car on the road a week or so ago. The battery would die completely over night if I didn’t unhook the cables. I narrowed it to the power down hatch circuit.(seems pretty common on here) so I pulled that hatch latch mechanism and tore it all down. The 35 year old grease was more like glue on the motor nut and gearbox housing. A quick clean and re-lube and everything is working much better and no more dead batteries. I’ve driven it about 100 total trouble free miles to date. I also thoroughly flushed the coolant yesterday morning. It was still nice and green with no signs of contamination. It does run cooler with fresh antifreeze in it. The only new thing I’ve really noticed so far, is now that it’s pretty cold out and it’s gotten some heat cycles it has a very minor external coolant leak on the front of the passenger side intake gasket. As long as nothing gets much worse I’ll tackle that come spring. I’ve gotten to where I’m comfortable doing mild to moderate full throttle pulls at highway speeds up to about 80MPH, maybe in another couple hundred miles I’ll do some from low speed/launches. This car is pretty damn cool.

Re: New here.

That's super cool you got to have the experience I had. Interesting that my intake gaskets had also failed after sitting for so long. In my case coolant was spraying out pretty seriously so I had to fix it first thing. Fel pro gaskets still working great 1.5 years later.

Re: New here.

I remember seeing the picture of yours pissing all over the place. Crazy how that happened. So far it’s only when cold for me. I had the car in the shop last night cleaning the inside out, it sat in there for probably 2.5-3 hours and there wasn’t a single fluid spot anywhere on the floor. I’ll enjoy that while it lasts… it’s only a matter of time. Speaking of interior… damn it cleaned up nice. I need to clean some water spots on the front seats but all in all it’s in nice shape. I’m gonna get another set of those trashy 80’s sheep skin covers for the front seat asap because the color in the seats is still pristine. I’m sure they’ve probably been on since real early in its life. I really do love this car. Yesterday was a new personal best of 45miles round trip. Still running awesome. I’ve done a few pulls to 5,000 Rpms and it pulls good the whole way. Transmission is still shifting great and the Posi definitely still works.

Hey Aqua just noticed you in here after all this time. Kind of wondered if you had joined. Lots of helpful people and post in here for sure. Hopefully your project is still moving along. Sure you recognize me from 5th Gen as well.

Re: New here.

Hey buddy, definitely recognize you from C5. This place has a ton of good information for sure. Doesn’t seem to be as active as maybe in days past but still a good place to hang out. I haven’t worked on the IROC much at all in the last month or so, just been driving it. I’ve put about 1,000 miles on it since the maiden voyage without the slightest bit of a problem. I’m going to completely replace the weather striping next, maybe come spring. It’s too cold outside to get real motivated to do anything. This one doesn’t stay in my shop like my ABM does.

A couple more recent shots… the Z is running really good. I need to do the T top drip edge seals next, they keep getting caught in the window when opening and closing the door. Finally got my 5th Gen out for the first time since November last Sunday.
